Who knew sleeping with the enemy could be this fun?

Was the one night stand a good idea?

Well, no. Probably not in retrospect.

In my defense I had just moved back into my grandparent’s house, I’d lost my dream job, and a guy on Tinder had stood me up. It was like life had suddenly stamped ‘LOSER’ on my forehead.

So when the guy behind the bar started giving me THE look…you know, the one that promised I’d be screaming his name into the wee hours of the morning? When that guy also has the perfect amount of scruff on his chiseled chin, biceps bulging out of his t-shirt, and a cocky grin you knew he’d earned in the sack…when he gives you that look, you don’t bother to figure out what your six degrees of separation are. You jump on that horse and ride it!

Pun fully and completely intended. And accurate by the way.

I fully admit to feeling sorry for myself and acting impulsively, but by the time I’d figured out WHO the bartender was, I was already falling for him.

Excerpt

An hour and a half later and hot stuff has come around the bar to take the seat beside me and join me on my mission to get shit-faced. I have to admit, I’m enjoying his company, but it doesn’t exactly make him Employee of the Year given the fact that he’s supposed to be working.

“Won’t your boss be mad that you’re drinking on the job?” I ask.

That damn dimple makes another appearance again before he answers. “Nah, he’s cool. It’s dead in here tonight. If anyone comes in, I’ll be sure they get what they need.” His gaze rakes up and down my small frame, and I get the distinct impression that he’s picturing me naked.

Jeez, I hope my nakedness looks amazing in his brain. Given the half-crooked smile on his face, I think it must. I wonder if his imagination is good enough to picture that dimple in my ass that doesn’t ever seem to want to disappear, regardless of how much I weigh.

As if he’s tempted fate with his words, the bell over the door dings and an older gentleman walks in and seats himself at one of the bar tables across the room.

“Be right back.” Cole pats my hand before he rises from his seat.

It was an innocent gesture, but it makes me think dirty things. The heat from his hand seeps up my arm like a bee sting and settles somewhere in my chest.

I watch him walk away and can’t help but notice the way his ass perfectly fills out his jeans. It bunches and flexes as his long strides take him across the bar. Maybe Lennon is right and it has been too long since I’ve been with a man.

It’s then that I realize that Tinder dude still hasn’t shown up. The bar isn’t busy, probably since it’s the middle of the week, and I’ve been chatting—okay, flirting—with Cole and hadn’t realized how much time had passed. I grab my phone from my purse and open the app to see that I have a new message. Pussylickr69: Not coming. Sorry found someone else who wasn’t so much werk. Fury causes my face to heat as I type out a quick reply that might be, and by that I mean most definitely is, alcohol-fueled. Whiteebanter: Yeah, I can see how thirty minutes of conversation is too much foreplay for you. Fuck you and your lack of knowledge of the English language. You spell work with an ‘o,’ dipshit. There. That’ll show him. With a frown, I drop my phone back into my purse.

“Everything okay?” Cole asks as he takes the seat beside me again.

I sigh. “Yeah, I just found out that Pussylicker isn’t coming anymore.”

Cole nearly spits out the sip of drink he’s just taken and has a coughing fit before he fully recovers. “Excuse me?”

“I was waiting for a guy from Tinder to show up, but he just ditched me because apparently it was too much work to have a drink with me before taking me back to his place to bang me.” I spin my glass in place on the bar top.

“You’re trolling for guys on Tinder?” Cole howls with laughter so hard he has to hold his stomach. I love the way the laugh looks on his face—the way it crinkles his eyes at the corners and how it showcases his perfect teeth. But all that aside, it’s irritating.

“It’s not that funny.” This guy might be hot, but right now he’s working my nerves.

“Actually, it is. Why the hell would a woman like you resort to finding someone to fuck on a dating site?”

The way the word ‘fuck’ rolls off his tongue has all my womanly parts contracting and wishing that it was an invitation to do just that. But never mind that, because I’m annoyed at him, I just barely remember through my drunken haze.

“What do you mean a woman like me?” I try to do air quotes around the last part, but my balance isn’t what it was three hours ago, and I almost topple off my stool, so I quickly grab on to the bar in front of me.

“Beautiful. Intelligent. Likable. Smartass.” He ticks each word off on one hand while he speaks and he says it like he means it. I hold his stare for a minute before realization dawns.

“Hey! I’m a B.I.L.F. You know, like a M.I.L.F. Only different.” I’m so impressed that I thought of that given my current state.

Cole chuckles with an amused gleam in his eyes. “Only better,” he says.

Our gazes lock for a beat and it’s at that moment I know that if I offer myself up to this guy, he’ll be more than willing to send me on the walk of shame tomorrow morning. Heat rushes into my cheeks and I look away. As much bravado as I had earlier about my Tinder escapade, I’m not sure I can do this. Be this girl so full of confidence that she bangs a stranger with no qualms about it.

My elation has crash-landed on the ground as I realize I’m not able to pull the trigger and make an advance toward him. I also know I’ll probably regret it forever because this man is so far beyond good-looking that it’s a speck in the rear-view mirror. Not to mention the fact that he’s sexy as hell and seems to be a decent human being. Which is more impossible to find in the Bay area than someone who doesn’t think they’re allergic to gluten.

I take a deep breath and finish the last couple of gulps of my drink and push the glass in Cole’s direction.

“Another, please.”

Cole tosses back the rest of his drink and I watch as his Adam’s apple bobs in his throat while the liquid slides down.

Damn. That is sexy.

Why is that sexy?

“I’m going to join you for another as well.” He gets up off his bar stool and before walking away he comes to stand directly behind me. “Assuming you want me to stick around?”

His breath washes across my neck and my ear and I close my eyes for a brief moment to enjoy the sensation. “I’d like that,” I say with all honesty.

“Good. I know the first guy let you down, but don’t worry… I’ve been told I lick pussy like a boss.”

And with that, he walks away while I struggle to keep my heart from pounding out of my chest.

I’m out of my league with this guy. I know it and there’s a good chance that he knows it, too.

But ask yourself this, ladies… if you were called up to the big leagues from the minors, would you say no?

Chapter Reveal

Lion Eyes by Casey Peeler

Coming February 6th

TYKE
It’s all I ever loved,
All I ever wanted.
Football is it for me.
The lights, the turf, the feel of the ball in my hands,
There’s nothing that means more to me.

But then, I meet Rilla James.
It’s a game changer right from the start.
Now, all I want is her,
Everything about her.

RILLA
It’s a love-hate relationship.
I love the excitement, the thrill of the game,
But despise everything it stands for.
The day the game took away someone in my life,
Everything changed,
For the better.
And I couldn’t be happier.

But then, I meet Tyke she Jamison.
It’s a blitz right from the start.
Now, I’m questioning it all.
Maybe I could get used to life under the lights,
With him.

Prologue
3 years earlier
Tyke

“Hey, dipshit. You ready?” I question Baker.
“Give me five,” he says as he pulls Holly in and attacks her face. I don’t know why she puts up with him.
Glancing over at Janie, she smiles. “Wanna go make use of our time?” she says with a smirk. Hell yeah I do.
“Come on,” I say as I toss my beer can in the fire and take the last one from the case. I pull her away from the bonfire, nod to Baker, and walk toward my truck.
By the time we reach the truck, Janie has her hands all over me and I know exactly where this is leading. Climbing in the cab of my truck, she straddles my lap and leans in. She peels off her top and my hands begin to wander. I can feel her smile with each kiss, and I know I’m a goner with this one. There’s something about her that’s got me tore up.
Just as things start to get where I want them, I hear Baker outside the truck. I holler at him to give us five minutes and she giggles into my shoulder as Baker heads away from the truck.
****
As Baker opens the truck door, he’s grinning like crazy.
“Don’t even,” Janie says.
“Hey, I’m glad I could get a little action while I waited,” he says with a snicker.
“Ewwww gross!” Janie says, and swats his arm.
“Dude, you’re riding on the back for that shit,” I say as I start the engine and crack open the last beer.
Janie looks in my direction. “No worries. I’m good,” I say and kiss her lips again. She slides close to me, and I think about letting Baker inside the cab. It’s cold as shit outside, but I think it will be funny to watch him shiver the entire way.
Chugging the beer, I toss it out the window before I hit the main road. Janie lays her head on my shoulder as I wrap my arm around her. As she cuddles into me, I get comfortable, and that’s when I hear it … The sound of a horn.
Pulling the truck over to the right side of the road, I overcorrect and Janie flies to the other side of the cab and I hear Baker yell but I can’t stop. I feel the truck dip into a ditch and that’s when it begins to roll over and over and over.
The truck comes to a stop, and that’s when the whistle sounds. I look and see the one single light coming straight at us. Train. I try to grab Janie but she’s trapped inside.
“Go, TD. Go. Save yourself and Baker.”
I can’t leave her. I need Janie in my life. As the train is barreling down the track, I take a quick glance over my shoulder and Baker isn’t in the truck bed. Fuck. I look back into Janie’s eyes. They begin to drift away. No. No. No. Stay with me. “Stay with me Janie. Please don’t leave me,” I plead as her eyelids flitter for the last time.
“Noooooo!” I scream. I kiss her and pull her with everything in my being. The metal gives and I yank her harder. “God, help me please! I’m begging you!” I can’t leave her in the truck. With one final tug, I pull her from the pinned metal just in time. The train crashes into the truck and pushes it to the other side of the tracks. Holding her lifeless body, I look for Baker, and that’s when I spy his lifeless body in the brush. I run to him with Janie in my arms, fall to my knees, and cry myself sober.
As the sirens approach in the background, I feel numb. I just killed my best friend and my girlfriend.

Chapter 1 August 2016
Tyke
“Tyke, you ready?” Mom asks as she places her hand on my knee, pulling me from my thoughts as I blankly stare out the passenger side window at my future. “Look, it can’t be that bad.”
I abruptly turn my head toward her. “You’re joking, right?” I question, already knowing she’s serious.
“Look, a bad choice might have made this an only option, but you’ve got to make the best of it.” I shake my head and get out of the car, slamming the door with little effort. I can’t believe I’m in this little hellhole of a town. I’m destined for great things because I am Tyke Jamison, the top recruited quarterback in the nation. I was born and bred to play football. All I know is pigskin, plays, conditioning and the thrill of throwing touchdown passes to win the game, but one stupid night changed it all. I went from hometown hero to a criminal in a matter of minutes. There’s no escaping what’s happened and it will haunt me forever.
“I get it, Mom. This is my one shot to start over, but let’s face it, no one wants their star player to have a rap sheet?”
She pauses as she lifts the trunk and stares at me. “Tyke Douglas Jamison, you stop right there. I will not listen to this load of crap any more. You are here for a reason. You are a bright young man that has a second chance at a future, and you will accept what is in front of you. No child of mine will throw away their life. If football is what you want, go and get it, but stop this,” she says as she points her finger in my chest. “You are in control of your actions. Now let’s go.”
I pause for a moment before grabbing an armful of my things. “Yes ma’am,” I say as we make our way toward the dorm. Following a step behind my mom, I smile. She’s one badass lady. She’s had to be to put up with me all of these years.
“Come on, slowpoke,” she says as she glances over her shoulder, and I shake my head and pick up my pace to meet hers. Yes, I’m cocky and have an attitude, but she’s the one person that keeps that checked. Mom is the one that stood by me through it all, not Dad. He’s too busy worrying about how this is going to affect him. How he can live vicariously through me when I’m not playing anymore. I’m the screw up who got a DUI, and killed my best friend and girlfriend. The day I was sentenced, my dad gave me all kinds of hell and pretty much told me to fuck off. That wasn’t part of his perfect plan, and neither was my time in juvenile hall and community service. That’s why he isn’t here today, but she is. No matter what, my mom has stood by my side. So, if she thinks this is my only hope to achieve my dream, I’m willing to give it a shot.

Sneak Peek

They barely made it through front door, especially since Dominic almost broke through it when the key didn’t make it into the lock on the first try. Once inside, Kate practically pulled him onto the floor of the long entryway. It felt like she was in a scene from a movie. They fumbled as they moved, insisting that they didn’t lose grip of each other. Dominic kicked the door closed behind them and, dropping to his knees, lifted her sundress up to reveal her stomach. Everything had been frantic and thrilling, but for a short moment, he stopped and sweetly kissed her hips and belly button. He glanced up at Kate and gave her that deadly smirk. Full of life again, he ripped the dress over her head. Next, she was undressing him as they found their way to the first piece of furniture that would support them- a white stone sofa table that ran along the back of the couch in the middle of the room. He lifted her up onto the table, and the shock of the cold against her butt and thighs startled her into a laugh.

Again, she found her hands running along the tattoos of his artwork splashed across his muscular chest. She leaned over and kissed along the swirls of paint. She loved his work. Seeing and touching it in real-life on the artist himself…it was an indescribable feeling. She wanted him inside of her now. She laid back on the table while her head rested on the back cushions of the couch. Dominic knew just what to do to take her over the edge.

With each thrust, she moved further back on the table. Finally, she leaned her head back and saw the comfort of the huge white couch behind her. She reached up and grabbed his shoulders. He knew what she wanted. They maneuvered over the table together and landed safely on the couch, which was deep enough to comfortably hold the two of them.

Dominic climbed on top of her. He had had other women on this same couch over the years, but nothing compared to this moment with Kate. No other woman in his past had ever excited him this way. He reached through her pile of hair and found the back of her head, lifting it up to meet his so he could take her mouth again. She let out a sweet moan in response.

Dominic had always loved it hard and fast, and now was fighting to keep himself in check. Earlier that morning, he had been just barely awake, and she was so perfectly sweet. Their first time felt more like some kind of dream. This time, he wanted to savor the moment with her. He didn’t want it to feel like a random fuck with a woman he had picked up. Kate was too special for that. He slowed his pace. She spread her legs wider to take him in deeper. With that one simple move, his eyes rolled back inside his head, and he lost any sense of control he thought he had obtained.

After making a pit stop at Starbucks for a green tea Frappuccino—she couldn’t stand the taste of coffee—she got on the highway and headed north. Traffic on 95 was surprisingly light for this time of morning, and it was a relatively brief commute to the sprawling white building she called her place of work. As far as most people were concerned, this massive, window-less compound on the edge of the city belonged to Sun and Moon Security, a private security consulting firm.
It was quite literally Erica’s job to keep them from ever learning the truth.
After giving her ID to the guard at the gate and being waved through, she parked in her usual spot, killed the engine, and shrugged on her leather jacket. Before she could get inside the building, she had to swipe her ID again and submit to a fingerprint scan. Though it sometimes felt tedious, all the security was incredibly necessary—not just to keep the outside world from seeing in, but to keep some of those inside from getting out.
The main lobby was all high ceilings and white marble grandeur, with half a dozen or so soaring marble pillars guarding the entrance to the courtrooms and legal offices at the back of the building. Though she couldn’t quite see it now, Erica knew the words non nobis solibus were inscribed in the arch above the pillars; a Latin phrase, meaning not for ourselves alone. But the surroundings paled in comparison to what filled them.
Even on a random Wednesday morning, the lobby was full of people of all ages, most wearing some variation on the all-black-and-leather-jacket uniform. There were a couple of pale figures huddled together in the sun tank—vampires who’d partied a little too hard and hadn’t been able to get back home before sunrise. On the other side of the room, near bookings, two officers were struggling to pin a burly werewolf with exceptionally pronounced sideburns, flashing gold eyes and unsheathed claws, to the desk while a third jammed a needle into his neck. Another group of officers rolled in somewhat behind her, loudly discussing a recent string of robberies near the Fashion District and the possibility that it was a rogue shifter.
Business as usual in the Department of Paranormal Regulation.
Mostly, everyone was too involved in what they were doing to acknowledge the people around them, but a few gave Erica nods of greeting or polite murmurs of “Hello” or “Good morning, Investigator Campbell.” The latter still sent a little thrill down her spine, even though she’d been hearing it all summer.
Branching off to the left was the entrance to the muster rooms, where the beat cops would gather at the start of their shift to receive their assignments. A tall, security-style desk blocked most of the view, though she could hear the loud, boisterous chatting that marked duty change. She waved at the sleepy-looking desk sergeant, but then, like she had for the last three months, Erica turned right instead and headed down the hall that led to the investigators’ bullpen.
Beyond the lobby, the décor started to change, gilt and marble giving way to generic gray carpeting and fluorescent lights. Here, the mood was somewhat more subdued, investigators buried in their computers and coffee cups, or preparing to head out and chase a lead—all under the watchful eyes of the sergeants, who had their offices in a row on the far side of the room. The door to the break room was open, and Erica could smell the bitterness of freshly brewed coffee mixing with the sugary scent of donut icing.
“You’re late.” Someone hip-checked Erica from behind, startling her out of her thoughts, and she whirled around to see her best friend, Raina Reyes, holding a mug of fragrant, steaming tea.
Erica laughed, cocking a hip. “And the sky is blue. Any other keen observations you’d like to make?”
Raina’s dark brown eyes sparkled with mischief behind expertly applied liner and mascara. Her glossy black hair positively gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights, and she wore a black halter-style top with a zipper down the middle under her leather jacket. To an outside observer, the multitude of charm bracelets circling her slim brown wrists would simply look like a fashion statement, but Erica knew they were much more than that—the stones were pathways Raina used to channel her magic.
Not everyone could tell an ordinary human from a paranormal creature, but Erica had been trained from age ten to sense the subtle otherness of those around her. With witches, it was a distinctive scent. Underneath the floral notes of her favorite rose perfume, Raina smelled like spices, herbs, and the earthy-sweet aroma of old paper. It was something of a strange combination, but Erica had grown to find it calming after all her years of being friends with Raina.
Discreetly, she took another whiff, then promptly gagged at the herbal tea scent cutting through it. “Ugh, that shit smells terrible,” she said, glaring at the offending tea.
“You do realize that’s what your drink is supposed to taste like, without the mountains of ice and whipped cream?” Raina arched one perfectly shaped eyebrow. “You’re basically drinking a milkshake. One of these days it’s going to catch up with you.”
“Impossible. Everything I eat just goes straight to these.” Erica hunched her shoulders inward to push her cleavage up and together even more than it already was, and both girls dissolved into fits of giggles.
“Your sourface partner is giving us the stinkeye,” Raina said in a low voice, when they’d both gotten the laughter out of their systems.
Now Erica made a face like she’d sucked a lemon. She didn’t dare look over to see if Raina was right, not wanting to give Quinn the satisfaction.
Erica hadn’t thought anyone could possibly be worse than her last partner as a beat cop, Mindy Hoffman—a forty-something divorcee who’d made a mid-life career switch after her husband left her. Personally, Erica could sympathize with the guy, seeing as how Mindy was built like a linebacker, wore her salt-and-pepper hair in a boy’s haircut, and had an acid tongue.
She was intelligent and physically fit enough for the job, but she and Erica had been like oil and water. She’d also been Erica’s third partner, the first two—both guys—having requested partner changes due to “inappropriate conduct.” (To be fair, she’d only slept with one of them.) Erica had been ready to pop the champagne when she got her promotion and Mindy didn’t…until she’d met her new partner, Quinn Walker.
Unlike Erica, who’d lived in Florida all her life, Quinn had only moved here a few years ago from somewhere near Nashville. Rumor had it she used to be a criminal before accepting a deal to work for the DPR in lieu of jail time—because she was a shapeshifter, which were incredibly rare in the department these days. She was pretty in a plain sort of way, with skin a few shades darker than the typical Miami tan and straight blue-black hair she always wore plaited in two Pocahontas braids. Sometimes Erica just wanted to yank out the damn rubber bands and let her hair free, as she suspected it would really soften up her long face.
Not that Quinn was about to take any fashion advice from Erica. They were the same age, but Quinn thought she was so much better than Erica just because she’d spent more time as a beat cop. The memories of their first case together still made her cringe, all these months later. It really was a miracle they hadn’t killed each other already.

Finn Cohen isn’t a survivalist. He likes computers and internet-researched his way into the final round of contenders for a new type of reality show. The premise? Spend 30 days on a deserted island with a woman he’s never met, and pass the tests the producers give them. Sounds easy enough. He just hopes he gets stuck with the hot chick he can’t stop staring at.
Penniless is exactly what Jessa McDaniel is. She’s living in her car, working under the table wherever she can…which, without a high school education is about all she can do. She needs to get on the show. She needs the money. Jessa is confident she can survive. She’s been doing it since she was old enough to remember. She just hopes the producers don’t put her with the stupid guy that keeps staring at her.

Will the pair last thirty days under harsh conditions? Or will the producers’ tasks have them crying Mayday sooner than we’d like?

Two souls. One goal: Sink or Swim.
