Excerpt

“Do I get a good-luck kiss?” he asked after checking for cameras, his hands framing my waist.

“Paxton.” I tried to make it sound like a warning, but it came out too breathy, too wanting. For crying out loud, I couldn’t even control my own voice against this guy.

He squeezed lightly and then groaned. “Did I ever tell you that I love this dress?”

I shook my head. The spaghetti-strap maxi dress had been a last-minute choice, but Penna said she was going to burn all my pants if she saw me in them for the twenty-first day in a row.

He leaned down, his mouth against the shell of my ear. “I can feel every curve under my hands, which makes me pretty damn desperate to slide this up your legs and really get my hands on you. But I won’t. You know why?”

I shook my head.

“Because you haven’t said yes—yet—and I’m a goddamned gentleman.”

My fingers traced the lines of the Chinese symbol tattoos that ran up his neck, simply unable not to touch him. “Do I have to say yes to everything to get to kiss you?” I asked.

His breath stuttered. “Do you want to say yes?”

Our eyes met, and it would have been so easy to say it, to throw my hesitation overboard and jump. But that wasn’t me, and it didn’t matter that I was in a breezy dress under the Italian sun with the hottest extreme athlete on the planet, I was still…me. “I’m thinking about it.”

His forehead puckered for a millisecond before he relaxed and smoothed the line of my waist. “Then I think we can take yeses on a case-by-case basis.”

My heart pounded in anticipation.
“Leah, would you like me to kiss you?”

“Yes,” I answered instantly.

Our hips met first as he drew me in. My hands slipped down the edges of his T-shirt to grasp the inked lines of his biceps. Arms like his should be modeled, sculpted, revered… or maybe just outlawed.

“Do you want to kiss me?” I asked.

“Hell yes,” he answered, then brushed his mouth against mine once before settling over me.

I opened for him, and he dove in, his tongue filling my mouth while my ass filled his hands. Gentleman, indeed.

Everything about her.

RILLA
It’s a love-hate relationship.

But despise everything it stands for.

Everything changed,
For the better.
And I couldn’t be happier.

But then, I meet Tyke she Jamison.
It’s a blitz right from the start.
Now, I’m questioning it all.
Maybe I could get used to life under the lights,
With him.

“You like?” she questions and I can’t hide my smile.

“I love it. Where did you get that?”

“Let’s just say I’ve got connections,” she says as she wraps her arm through mine and gives me a quick kiss on the cheek. I pause, and look at her.

“You know what I really think about that jersey?”

She raises her eyebrows. “It looks way better on you than me,” I state.

“I beg to differ,” she says with a wink. “Now, let’s go meet your mom.”

As we make our way to McDonald’s, Rilla is close but keeps a reserved distance from me. “You know you don’t have to keep so much distance between us. It’s my mom.”

“Um, exactly,” she states with a small laugh.

“Do you not recall how I met your dad the first time?”

“Oh yeah, wanna recreate it for her too?” She can’t be serious, so I call her bluff right when we’re in sight of Mom. I pause, turn to her, and pull her in for a kiss that has her breathless, but squirming to escape. She tries her best to pull back, but payback’s a bitch. When I pull away she smacks my shoulder and I burst out laughing while giving her a playful smack on the ass. “I’m gonna kill you,” she says between her teeth as she smiles at my mom. Her face is beet red, and I can’t help but chuckle.

As we cross the street, I can read my mom like a book. I’m about to get it.

“Tyke Douglas! If that’s how you act in public, Lord help what happens behind closed doors,” she says, and I can see that Rilla’s mouth is wide open.

“Guess it’s a good thing the doors never close due to that stupid rule,” I say and Mom shakes her head.
Casey Peeler grew up in North Carolina and still lives there with her husband and daughter.

I touched the edge of the coin to the paper and again worked from left to right, uncovering an X and an O in the bottom row. But after I brushed the crumbled wax off the last square, an X sat in the middle of the spot.

I blinked several times and whispered, “No f***ing way.” Three Xs decorated the right-hand column, which meant…

Holy mother***ing s**t, I won!

I dropped the quarter and whooped, fist-pumping like a madman. Nothing like this had ever happened to me before. I was the guy who went to conferences and came home empty-handed while the rest of the attendees from my office won iPads and Amazon.com gift cards. Euphoria faded as the gravity of the situation hit me, my arm freezing in midair as I realized my win was drastically different.

On autopilot, I opened the top drawer and stuffed the ticket under a stack of ties. Wait, why the hell did I automatically want to hide it? I had to tell someone about it, but who? I pulled it out and turned it over, scanning the fine print on the back until I found a phone number to call and report a win.

Scooping up my cell phone, I took a deep breath and tried to organize my jumbled thoughts.

A million dollars would undoubtedly change my life. I could move out of this overpriced, glorified closet and buy a house or condo with multiple rooms. My student loans could be paid off in one fell swoop. No more scrimping and pinching pennies, living paycheck to paycheck. I could travel and finally see the Eiffel Tower, Egyptian pyramids, and Hawaiian volcanoes in person.

It all sounded pretty damn good to me. Honestly, it sounded too good to be true. Any moment now, I’d wake up and realize it was just a dream because crazy s**t like this only happened in movies.

Hey! My name is Sarah Brianne and after living for twenty-two years the characters in my head told me enough was enough and I have finally put pen to paper (or is it finger to keyboard?) to tell their stories. Since I was a little girl I have watched every chick flick I could get my hands on, then when I became older I discovered a whole new world of romance novels. To me there is nothing better then a tale of true love and those are the stories that have inspired me to write. Like everything else in my life I have put my own spin on two lovers destined to be together.

EXCERPT

When I got downstairs to the dining room, Glenn and Wade were already there, speaking to each other in hushed tones by the large window. There were shiny plates on the table, with all sorts of silverware around them. Start from the outside and work your way in, was what I was told when it came to using the various forks and spoons. Give me just one of each and I’d be happy.

It wasn’t long before Glenn noticed me at the door and the conversation ceased. “Emma, you look lovely tonight,” he announced.

I smiled. “Thank you.”

He beckoned me over to the table and Wade held out a seat for me. I sat down and he took the one on the right, while Glenn sat on my left at the head of the table. There was only one other place setting and it was across from me.

“Wine?” Glenn asked, holding up the bottle.

I nodded. “Sure.”

He poured me a glass and I took a sip. It tasted like heaven, all fruity and crisp. It was so good I had to take another sip, and another, while we waited on the special guest. Not even a minute later, the dining room door opened and a man walked in. Only, he wasn’t just anyone.

It’d been eight years and he’d surely changed, but there was no mistaking those gray eyes. His hair was the same light brown, and mussed up like all the guys did their hair these days. However, his body looked totally different. His cream colored, long-sleeve sweater hugged a set of muscular arms, and his face was more rugged, covered in a five o’clock shadow.

I almost choked on my wine. “Oh my God.” Is it really him?

“Emma, are you okay?” Wade asked, his voice low.

“Yeah,” I whispered. “I’m fine.”

I waited for Preston to look at the table, and when his gaze finally caught mine, he paused for a slight second. In his face, I could see the friend I lost so long ago, but it vanished quickly.

Glenn and Wade both stood when Preston approached, and I shot up out of my seat, bumping the table with my jerky movements. Glenn grinned at me and then at Preston. “Preston Hale, I’d like you to meet Emma Turner. She’s my assistant. Emma, this is Preston Hale, a close family friend. His father is one of my dearest friends.”

Preston held out his hand and looked at me as if he’d never laid eyes on me before. “It’s nice to meet you.”

Was he being serious? I shook his hand and made sure to put a little extra squeeze in there for good measure. “Meet me? Surely, you remember who I am.”

Glenn’s eyes went wide. “Wait. You two already know each other?”

I nodded. “From college.” I was about to add before he up and left without a trace, but thought better of it.

Glenn chuckled and smacked a hand on Preston’s shoulder. “Well, isn’t this a small world? You’ll have to tell me some stories on this one.” He nodded my way.

Preston’s jaw clenched. “Can’t. Don’t remember her.”

My mouth dropped open; it was like being punched in the gut and slapped in the face, all at the same time. No words would come out, so I sat there with a lump in my throat. In college, he’d been a close friend. I sang with him in his band, Silent Break. We connected on stage in a way I’d never felt with anyone. I cared about him, and had even been ready to take the next step in our relationship right before he up and disappeared. I never got to tell him how I felt. Now he looked at me as if I was a stranger.

The room fell silent. I wanted to say something, but I bit my tongue. It was going to be the longest dinner of my life.
