Misfit by Alyne Roberts

Title: Misfit
Author: Alyne Roberts
Genre: New Adult/Romantic Suspense
Release Date: April 24, 2017
Misfit. Outcast. September Evans was used to being an outsider after being bounced around foster homes. No one seemed to resent her more than her new foster brother, Keaton Grayson. He hated the new girl intruding on his life.

Until he didn’t. Fights became foreplay and anger became lust. The line between their love/hate relationship started to blur until it disappeared completely and ended in heartbreak.

Getting close to Keaton was September’s biggest mistake. One that comes back to haunt her four years later, when the stakes are higher than ever. The two are going to have to work together on something dangerous and wrong but done for the right reasons. The chemistry and attraction are still there, buried under resentment and blame.

Keaton still wants September gone, or maybe he just wants her. September can’t forget her past with Keaton, but she can’t let him ruin her future either.

Erasing that line between love and hate again could destroy them both.
Copyright Alyne Roberts. Unedited. Subject to Change.
I stare up at the warehouse and then back down at my phone. Gray’s Auto. I have the address right but the place looks vacant. There’s a closed sign in the window and a few cars in the parking lot. I knock on the big metal door, but no one answers. By the time the sun sets, I am out of patience.
“Sure, come on over Nine. Not a problem at all,” I mutter to myself as I pick one of the three locks. They are heavy duty locks, not easy to pick but after a few more cuss words and promises to kill Rhys, I get in.
“Make yourself at home, Nine,” I say to myself as I walk up the stairs and step into a large loft.
The huge living space is lined with windows that over look the river that runs along the side of the building. A couch and a flat screen TV sit in the center of the room. I spot the kitchen in the back and head for it. I need a shot but a beer will have to do. I pop the top and hop up on the counter to wait.
I’m on my second beer when I hear a car pull up. Footsteps echo up the hall before the lights flick on and I’m met with a grinning Rhys. It’s rare to get a smile from him so I don’t waste a beat before I jump down and into his waiting arms. His hug is like home as I’m wrapped up with one of the few people in this world I can trust.
When I look over his shoulder, my eyes lock on dark eyes I know too well. That familiar anger and hate are there, glaring back at me. I’m hit in the gut with every memory I have been trying to block out since I left home 4 years ago.
“September.”
My name rolls off his tongue with ease, like it always had. It was always September. He was the only other person that called me that other than my mom. Not Ember like I asked him to call me hundreds of times. Not Nine or Sept.
His voice is deeper with more grit. He looks different than the teenager I left standing on that porch 4 years ago. His chest is wider, filled out with muscles underneath a tight t-shirt. Tattoos peak out from under his sleeves, covering his hands and climbing out from his collar up his neck. There’s a light stubble on his face that I’ve never seen before. If I thought I couldn’t resist him when I was 17 and stupid, I don’t stand a chance at 22 and even more stupid.
Keaton Grayson is a man now. Hot and angry and everything I have been trying to forget since I left.
“Keaton,” I whisper as I pull out of Rhys’s hold.
“You two know each other?” he asks, looking between Keaton and I in suspicion.
Neither one of us speaks for a minute. How do you answer that question? Is there one word that sums up our relationship? He was my first love or I broke his heart doesn’t seem like enough.
“He was my foster brother,” I finally answer, knowing if I didn’t offer something Keaton would answer. I didn’t want to hear his explanation. It would be hurtful.
“She was more of a house guest actually.”
There it is. Those words hurt more than I’d like to admit. Always the outsider. I was never really part of his family, no matter how badly I wanted it.
“Is that right?” Rhys asks, looking to Keaton then back at me.
Keaton laughs but it’s hard and laced with venom. I lift my chin and straighten my spine, ready for the verbal attack I know is coming.
“No. Absolutly not. I can’t work with her. I don’t trust her.”
Ouch.
“It’s her job, Keaton.”
“Then I’m out.”
No. No. No. This can’t be falling apart before I even start. Rhys promised a second man and I counted on that.
“We need you. We need 3 people and you’re the only person I trust,” Rhys argues. I wait silently because anything I say would only make matters worse.
Keaton glares at me. More than the animosity, I see hurt underneath the repulsion and hate. It’s not much different than the way he looked at me before I walked out of his life for what should have been forever.
“You owe me,” Rhys says and I know Keaton is in. Keaton may not trust me but he is loyal to a fault to those that earn it.
Stormy dark eyes land on me. His gaze moves over my body, slowly, like he’s actually seeing me for the first time since he found me in his apartment. He takes in my long, red hair and red lipstick. In a plaid skit and loose shirt that hang off one shoulder, I stand barefoot, my knee-high boots on his floor. I feel naked and exposed even though he’s seen it all before.
Keaton moves, fast and without hesitation, pushing me to the wall behind me. I swallow hard from the impact and the heat rolling off his chest. Memories of another time I was pinned under the wall by Keaton floods my mind unwanted. I feel my face turn pink.
“Listen to me, September,” he whispers. I resist the urger to shiver at the way my name comes out a growl. “Don’t screw us over. Don’t steal from us, lie, or get your ass in trouble.”
I gasp at the words he said to me the first time we met. I realize, with heartbreaking clarity that Keaton hates me more than when he first met me all those years ago. No matter how close we eventually became or everything we went through, I erased all that good. He pushes off me and toward the door they came in.
“Show her to the guest room. I’m going out.”
The door slams behind him and I stare at it, still pressed to the wall. Every cell in body is telling me to run. Leave Willow Creek and don’t look back. I’ve done it before and can do it again. But then I think of my mother in that facility and I remember why I am here.

Excerpt

Once I was out of the elevator, I headed straight into the bathroom and noticed Ms. Drake was not at her desk. Maybe she went home for the day and I won’t have to deal with her.

I checked my watch and noted the time, ten minutes until eleven o’clock. I had just enough time to give my cock a good spanking before Ken Brooks, the CFO, used the restroom for his daily shit storm. I’m sure Ms. Drake had learned by now to stay away from her desk when Brooks used the bathroom.

My orgasm was quick due to the use of one of my top fantasies about Ms. Drake. I had about ten different fantasy scenarios of her I used when I masturbated, and they were ranked by length of orgasm and time it took to hit the big O.

The one I used was ranked at number two. I would have used the first one knowing time was limited with Brooks nearing, but I wanted to switch it up. Anyways, I used number one in the shower this morning.

Number two was Morgana on her knees in my office, begging for my cock. She drooled as I told her to take all of it. I knew she wouldn’t actually drool in real life, but it’s my fantasy. In my imagination, she salivated all over the Captain.

I cleaned up, flushed, and then ran into Brooks just as I was washing my hands. He was boring as usual. He always discussed the weather. It’s cold. Bitterly cold. Chicago in the winter was frigid, everyone knew that. Why talk about it? He mentioned the sun and I didn’t care.

Once I was in my office, I opened my laptop and began checking my emails. One was marked urgent about the new Denton account. I realized I was going to need Ms. Drake to help me.

Having just orgasmed, being in the same room as Ms. Drake shouldn’t cause any problems. I got up and opened the door to find her with her head on her desk.

“Ms. Drake.”

She popped up and stared at me. Those greenish eyes turned golden as they enlarged.

Here I was boasting about what a hard worker she was, and now she’s laying down on the job.

“Is this how you spend your day when you think I am not in the office? Just lying around.”

She opened and closed her mouth a few times before finally shaking her head at me.

“The meetings for today got canceled, so it looks like I’m going to be here the rest of the day. Come inside my office; I need to go over some things with you.”

She mumbled something just as I turned to go back inside. The words ‘come’ and ‘bathroom’ were the only ones I caught.

I turned back. “What did you say?”

Her eyes darted around. “Uh, let me just run to the bathroom first.”

I nodded my head. “Okay.”

After a few minutes, she strolled into my office. Over the last few weeks, I had become accustomed to Ms. Drake’s stride. It’s average but with a little more swing in her hips and at times, bouncy. Perhaps that was why she tripped more often than others.

But right now her walk was cat-like, stealthy, with a heaping dose of confidence and cleavage. As she took her seat, her fingers tugged at her blouse, bringing my eyes down to her chest where they remained.

I hated it when she did that.

Forcing my gaze back to her face I wondered what I missed. Something was happening and I wondered for a moment if it involved me.

“Are you feeling alright, Ms. Drake? You look pale and you have a funny expression on your face.”

Her fingers continued to fondle her top but her eyes narrowed at me. “Oh I’m fine, Mr. Payne. One hundred percent, grade-A beef, fine. In fact, I think I’m a little hot. Do I look hot to you, Mr. Payne?”

One button. Pop.

Another button. Pop.

She shimmied slightly but enough to reveal a slip of green lace.

I swallowed. Hard.

“Ms. Drake, what are you doing?”

Her lips curved as if she was waiting for those exact words to tumble out of my mouth. I got the feeling she wanted something. I also got the feeling I would give it to her. My hand slipped to my lap as I adjusted my cock already stirring from his earlier binge.

He was insatiable.

“I was in the bathroom a little while ago.”

I nodded. “I know you asked to use it before we had this meeting.”

Did I drop something in there? Maybe she heard me talking to Brooks and wants in on that top-secret conversation about the sunny sky in winter.

I tried to hide my laughter.

“No, before.”

What was she talking about? This woman was sexy and smart, but right now she might as well have been…wait, I think I got her meaning.

“The women’s bathroom you mean, right, Ms. Drake?” My eyes pleaded with her to open her mouth and say ‘yes, the women’s bathroom.’ Why would she not use the women’s restroom? That would be ridiculous, especially so close to Brooks’ time.

Her head turned slowly from side to side in a tormenting no. “No, the men’s. The woman’s restroom was being cleaned so I had to use the men’s. You know, the one where you wanted me to take all of your cock.”

I’ll give you a hint. It isn’t what you think.

My name is Ian Jensen and I am a Pediatric Oncologist that works day and night with kids that prove to be braver than I. I am open to Nerf gun fights, having fun, and taking control. What’s a doctor who lives life by the book do when given a new chapter to live in?

Ask me again tomorrow?

What happens when a photographer set to live in the dark meets the doctor that lives in the light? What happens when our world collide?

“Put your hands up,” a little voice yelled. Ian and I put our hands up. I turned my head to see a little boy wearing a mask and a cape holding a Nerf bow. I smiled as Ian reached into his coat and snagged a little Nerf gun.

“Who are you?” I asked to distract the kid avenger from Ian’s movements.
“I am-,” his voice froze as I saw a woman stepped out of a room with her arms crossed. She cleared her throat as I looked at Ian and he winked.
In one swift, move Ian turned with his Nerf gun and shot a toy bullet as he moved in front of me. The boy fired and his bullet hit the wall as he pulled back the arm on the bow and was ready to fire again. Ian pulled the trigger on the little boy and fired again intentionally hitting the wall as the masked child fired again.
Ian groaned as he took a toy arrow in the leg, and fell to the floor. I immediately wanted to play along so I grabbed his gun and fired at the boy who was faster than the foam bullet I launched.
I went to step forward over Ian when I got really dizzy and lost my balance. I fell back and hit the floor with a thud.
“Doctor Ian, is she okay?” a little voice asked as a bright light was intensely in my eyes.
“What’s your name?” Ian asked as he looked me over.
“You know my name.”
“What day is it?” Ian asked as I had to follow his finger.

“Ass hole day?” I asked and snickered when Ian scoffed because there were virgin ears around.

The warm, late spring sun is shining through the window when I wake up softly this morning. Sam is pressed up behind me. Close enough, I can tell he’s feeling playful. His left hand is at my breast and I feel his morning beard across my cheek as he leans down to kiss the side of my neck, just under my ear. I hear the soft smile in Sam’s morning scratchy voice as he says, “Morning, baby,” I love quiet moments like this.

“Good morning, handsome,” I give back as Sam’s hand trails over my belly. Softer than it was when we first met when I was young and in college, but it did carry his two babies, so he loves it, and moves down to greener pastures. I rock into him. Not once in the last fifteen years, have I gotten tired of him. Sam grabs my long, dark blonde ponytail tipping my head back so he can thoroughly kiss me. I love his kisses. The soft sweet ones, the teasing ones, and the ones like this that get down to business. I moan into his mouth and Sam meets it with a growl of his own.

Things are just starting to get good when I hear two little voices chanting down the hallway, “Let’s go Blazers. Let’s go Blazers. Let’s Goooooo!!!! The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire. We don’t need no water let the mother effer burn!!!!” Sam’s forehead is pressed down on my shoulder and his arms are wrapped tight around my belly. So tight, I can feel him shaking with laughter.

“Sam!” I screech when the shock of my precious angels chanting an inappropriate song from the 80’s. I know exactly where they got it, that rat! I reach over to swat the stinker with a pillow from my side of the bed, but he’s already moving. Throwing his shorts on the floor as he struts to the shower. Letting me see exactly what I will be missing today and I will be missing it. Damn, my man is good looking.

“What?!” Sam says on the run. “Soccer waits for no one!!!” he’s laughing as he runs into the shower.

***

Twenty minutes later, my girls are pounding pancakes and bacon with tall glasses of orange juice. Fueling up for the big game. Six and under soccer is no joke. Sam walks in and I feel my breath catch in my throat. These are the moments I live for. My kids doing normal everyday things, the sexiest man I know, who after all this time, still looks at me like he won the lottery.

I catch Sam’s secret smile as he walks over to the coffee pot and pours himself a cup. I catch a kiss on the cheek as he passes.

“I’m sure going to miss you guys today,” I say and it’s true. I never miss a game, but my best girlfriend from college is coming in today and I need to get to the market and prep dinner, put clean linens on the guest bed, and pick up any wayward toys that have made their way back out of the girls’ rooms. Really, the things I need to do without a five and a three year old under foot.

“Don’t even worry about it,” Sam reassures me. “We’ll be fine today, right girls?” who throw their fists in the air with a “Heck, yeah!” Sam’s influence and personality are all over those two. Sometimes, I think I was just the oven that baked the cake. “Plus, it’ll be totally worth it at supper time when I get to dive into your famous pot roast and green beans,” He says while patting his stomach which is just as flat as it was at twenty one when I got my first glimpse of him.

“All right girls, you about done?” I ask them. “You don’t want to be late for the big game,” I smile at the three most important people in the world to me. This moment, like so many others, is why I breathe, why I wake up in the morning.

Sam gives me one more, soft kiss and the girls each hug me fiercely on their way out the door. Those three are going to have such a fun day.

I shut the door behind them and go back to the kitchen to clean up my mess from breakfast. I love to cook and I am not the cleanest cook either, but my family loves it. And is there really anything better than cooking for the people you love? Nope, I didn’t think so. At least not to me.

After I have put the last of the dishes away, I clean up the girls’ toys and pajamas they’ve left all over in their wake for soccer glory. I make the beds and wipe down the bathroom counters. I throw on jeans and my favorite slouchy sweater. I have just enough time to run to the market and get home before Hannah gets here when there is a knock at the door. I run down the stairs with a smile on my face. Sam is amazing, but he’s a mess sometimes. Always forgetting something.

“What did you guys forget this time?” I shout as I throw open the door. But it’s not Sam I see standing there. It’s his best friend, Holt, and by the devastated look on his face, I know why. Everything changes in a moment.

About the Authors

Katherine Bone

National best-selling historical romance author Katherine Bone has been passionate about history since she had the opportunity to travel to various Army bases, castles, battlegrounds, and cathedrals as an Army brat turned officer’s wife. Who knew that an Army wife’s passion for romance novels would lead to pirates? Certainly not her rogue, whose Alma Mater’s adage is “Go Army. Beat Navy!” Now enjoying the best of both worlds, Katherine lives in the south where she writes about rogues, rebels, and rakes—aka pirates, lords, captains, duty, honor, and country—and the happily-ever-afters that every alpha male and damsel deserve.

Barbara Devlin

USA Today Bestselling, Amazon All-Star author Barbara Devlin was born a storyteller, but it was a weeklong vacation to Bethany Beach, DE that forever changed her life. The little house her parents rented had a collection of books by Kathleen Woodiwiss, which exposed Barbara to the world of romance, and Shanna remains a personal favorite.

Barbara writes heartfelt historical romances that feature flawed heroes who may know how to seduce a woman but know nothing of marriage. And she prefers feisty but smart heroines who sometimes save the hero, before they find their happily ever after.

Barbara earned an MA in English and continued a course of study for a Doctorate in Literature and Rhetoric. She happily considered herself an exceedingly eccentric English professor, until success in Indie publishing lured her into writing, full-time, featuring her fictional knighthood, the Brethren of the Coast.

Kamery Solomon

Kamery is not the person who grew up dreaming of the day that she would clutch her very own novel to her chest, tears brimming over the rims of her eyes as she thought about how she’d written it herself, finally! In fact, anything remotely like that didn’t even happen until she was actually holding her first book in her hand, amazed that she’d written it and wondering how on Earth she’d managed to do it when it hadn’t ever occurred to her to write one until months before. Surprisingly, though, it was just what she never realized she loved doing.

When starting out in life, Kamery had (and still has) big dreams to perform on Broadway. She loves music and acting very much, while she and dance have a love/hate relationship; she would love to do it and every form of dance decides it hates that about her, haha! The one constant she always had between the performing world and the book world were the stories, tales that transported her to other worlds and made her feel like she really could do anything. Finally, she decided she wanted to do that for someone else and sat down to write.

It’s been a few years since she held that first book, realizing that she really liked writing and wanted to do more, but the love that blossomed in that moment has only grown. Currently, Kamery works from home in Arizona, while taking care of her two adorable kids, a girl and a boy, and talking her sweet husband Jake’s ear off about the insane amount of characters in her head who are ready to fight to the death for a chance at their own novels. It truly is a wonderful life!
