“Well – ” Jack shifted his feet and looked uncomfortable.
“They might find something.”
“Like what?!”
He rested a hand on Cal’s shoulder. “Listen kid, you and I both know you own all the ‘Star Wars’ movies – even the prequels. Now I don’t judge you for it, but –“ he glanced around with a worried expression, “- the others might not be so open-minded.
Relieved, Caleb laughed, “Don’t be a hater, Jack. Don’t be a hater.”
Jack was propped up in bed eating jello. He’d grumbled about staying overnight for observation but ate the hospital food with gusto.
Caleb watched with a mixture of revulsion and admiration as the detective chased the jello down with greasy fries he’d made Jess smuggle in from the café next door.
Caleb ran a critical eye over his friend. “Aren’t sick people supposed to sip fluids and look well … sick?”
“I’m not sick!” he declared defensively. “I have a scratch on the head.”
“You were shot in the head and you have eleven stitches.”
Jack paused in his chewing. “I was grazed.”
“You almost bled out on the floor.”
“So, I lost a little red stuff.” The detective shrugged. “Head wounds always look worse than they actually are.”
