The group of police officers gathered beneath a cloudless sky. A cheerful summer breeze drifted through the towering trees while children skipped rocks on Gray’s Lake. Songbirds twittered joyous tunes in the exact park where destruction had reigned in the cooler months.
Squad cars lined the beaten paths, silent after the honorary ceremony. The annual police department luncheon was sprawled on picnic tables while the soft strains of dueling guitars played under a sycamore tree.
Never had Joci Dorous felt more Zen as she sat up against a tree trunk, her hands weaving between the clipped waves of Officer Cameron Shearer’s hair. Her eyes surveyed the happy troops of families while charcoal grills sputtered flames. “Did you ever imagine anything like this for your life?” she asked.
The man with his head on her lap shifted to face her, but his view was obstructed by her slightly swollen waist. Peeking over, Cameron pressed a kiss to the baby bump as he replied, “No, my mind could never conjure anything so glorious.”
Joci’s face broke into a smile, and he leaned up on his elbow. “Are you happy then?” he inquired, kissing the crease of her lips.
Catching his face between her hands, she nodded vigorously. “Very much so.”
The instant she dropped his chin, Cameron sprang into action and crawled up beside her. Sweat lined his brow as he dug a hand into his back pocket. He knelt before her with a small black box in his grip.
Whispers scattered through the crowd around them, but neither paid heed. The sun cast perfect light through the tree’s leaves, enveloping them in eternal bliss.
“How about now, Joci?” Cameron said in a loud voice. The shimmer in his brown eyes matched the one in hers. “We’re not well-traveled archaeologists, and I think I’m a few years late, but I love you. If you will have me, I’ll spend every day I live proving we were always meant to be together.”
In stunned silence, Joci gaped at the three-carat diamond, impressive for a modest police officer. Without a doubt, his continued alliance with the Del Rossi mob assisted him in the purchase. “Will you arrest me if I say no?” she replied, with a smirk.
“Hell yeah!” a heckler who sounded a lot like Quinn called.
She swiveled her gaze from the ring back to Cameron. The brilliant colors of his ornate tattoos poked from beneath his police uniform, a perfect collision of worlds. Her eyes darkened to green and a shy grin spread across her cheeks.
“Then I better say yes before another woman does,” she managed, her face blushing a shade that would put a rose to shame.
Cameron flashed a set of straight teeth and hauled her to him. “Good, because otherwise I owe Quinn five hundred bucks.”
Gaping, she swatted the back of his head, but he still possessively kissed her lips. The group surrounding them clapped, a few whistled, and the women cooed over the scene.
From beneath the flowing branches of a weeping willow, the scarred onlooker had another reaction. The one emotion that looked best on Joci Dorous was love. Unfortunately for his mangled self, the same happy gleam in her ever-adapting hazel eyes had shone on him not yet seven months ago.
But now he was back. Back for his wife and unborn child. Hell would come as a welcoming embrace for Cameron Shearer when Adrian Petosa was finished with him. Taking his life for a short amount of time was one thing, but after the grueling battle Adrian fought the last few months, the mobster turned cop wouldn’t get her eternal devotion too. Not while he breathed. Not while he watched their every move.

That the vows you made to each other were simply empty promises.

You pick up and move to the country to start fresh.

Jensen
Married to my high school sweetheart, the best thing she gave me was my baby girl.

But we weren’t enough for her. I wasn’t enough for her.

The last thing I expected on my birthday was a Dear John letter, but that’s what I got when she upped and left.

Now, it’s just me and my girl against the world till the new girl moves in next door.

Is there such a thing as a perfect love story?

Chapter One
Hailey“Hello.” Turning down “Glorious” by Macklemore blasting in the background while I washed the kitchen floor with Pine Sol and water, I answer the phone after the first ring.

“It’s me.” I hear my best friend and cousin, Crystal, say from the other end. “Where are you?” I can’t see her face, but I know something is wrong. Even though she’s asked me that question a million times before, this time it’s different. There is no carefree tone. This time, it’s curt and to the point with no laughter in her voice.

“I’m home,” I say, almost whispering as my hand shakes against my ear. My mouth suddenly goes dry, my neck starting to get hot. Something inside my stomach suddenly drops when a slow burn sets in.

“You need to come to the hospital.” Crystal is an emergency room nurse at St. Mary’s, so whatever feeling I was having before has now doubled. “Blake is on his way to get you.” When she mentions my brother, I now know something is gravely wrong. The honk outside doesn’t allow me to question her any further. “You need to get in the car, okay?” she says softly but firmly. “Listen to me, Hailey. Go outside and get here.” My head nods as the hand holding my phone to my ear falls away.

The front door opens, and Blake comes in, looking at me with sorrow and sadness. His brown eyes meet mine briefly, and then he looks down. He doesn’t say anything to me; he simply holds out his hand to me. I put my hand in his, and he leads me out to his truck. He opens the door for me, helping me take that step in.

As I’m looking at him, he pulls the seat belt over my chest and buckles me in. My mind’s still playing the phone call, trying to dissect the conversation. Trying to find one little word that can be the clue. “It’s going to be okay.” His voice breaks through the haze.

I nod my head at him, then he steps back and shuts the door, jogging over to his side. He gets in and puts the truck in drive. I’m on the outside looking in, watching my life fall apart without knowing it.

The only thing I’m certain of is that the sun is shining without a cloud in the sky. As I watch a bird soar through the sky almost in the same direction we are going, I think to myself, Bad things don’t happen when it’s sunny outside, right?

I watch the bird, not even realizing we’ve made it to the hospital. I don’t have a chance to open my door because Blake has it opened before I even think to reach for the handle. “You’re going to be okay,” he assures me as he raises his baseball cap to run his hands through his short dark hair.

“What’s going on?” I have a feeling my entire life is about to change, so I beg him to tell me before we walk through those doors. Blake doesn’t answer. He just reaches down to grab my hand and lead me through the revolving doors.

The harsh smell of antiseptic immediately fills my nose. Voices bombard me, though, none of them are familiar. Glancing around, I take in the hustle and bustle of the emergency room. My heartbeat echoes in my ears as I try in vain to locate a familiar face. I just need to know who we’re here for.

As we silently walk down the corridor, my mind never stops thinking about why we are here. I look up at Blake, asking the one question that makes my heart squeeze with such intense pain, it feels like it might explode.

“Is it Mom? Dad?” I can hear the pleading in my tone. He gives me nothing, continuing to look straight ahead. My eyes go back to the floor, following the tile pattern as we make our way beyond the entrance to the emergency room. The first thing I see is both of my parents, alive and healthy. My mother has tears running down her cheeks, and my father has his arm around her shoulders. They are standing next to the nurses’ station. I look back at Blake in horror. “Is it Nanny?”

He doesn’t have time to answer because Crystal comes out from behind the nurses’ station in her everyday uniform of blue scrubs and Crocs, wearing a stethoscope around her neck.

With one glance at her face, I stop my feet in their tracks. My feet are stuck to the floor as if someone crazy glued them to that spot. I can see the hurt and tears in her eyes. She looks at me with her head tilted sideways, her bottom lip trembling. My body blocks any movements I try to make. I try to advance to Crystal, but I can’t. My knees start to give out, and a horrible shrieking sound comes from somewhere.

I try turning my head to see where the yelling is coming from, but I can’t. I’m on my hands and knees in the hospital corridor. It isn’t until the coldness seeps through my hands that I realize I’m the one screaming. That wretched sound is coming from me. Me. My throat raw, my eyes burning, and my heart irrevocably broken. No words need to be said. No confirmation given. I don’t need them to bring me to a place where we can “talk quietly.” It’s at that moment I finally know what everyone else knows.

My husband is dead.

Unholy Alliance

Title: Unholy Alliance
Author: Reily Garrett
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publication Date: April 30, 2018
Blurb:
Can fated love poised between the illusion of immortality and the certainty of death find new life between hope and adversity?
Fate will always have her say, whether vampire, witch, angel, or ghost. After centuries of protecting humanity from supernatural threats, Michel is tasked by Vampir Bruderschaft to find and destroy an ancient relic destined to decimate humanity. In securing the artifact, Michel is mortally bitten by a unique breed of demon.
Since the day she survived a rogue vampire attack, Sariel has trained to destroy demons and vampires alike. With a witch as mentor and a ghost for companionship, she has everything she needs, until three demons cross her path. Noting her angelic origins changes her entire worldview, complicating the simple life she has always craved.
As the prophecy unfolds, the vampire, angel, and witch must form a truce to survive demonic forces while navigating the murky waters of desire and betrayal, paranormal talents, and malevolent cunning.
Reily is a West Coast girl transplanted to the opposite shore. When she’s not working with her dogs, you can find her curled up with a book or writing her next story. Past employment as an ICU nurse, private investigator, and work in the military police has given her countless experiences in a host of different environments to add a real world feel to her fiction.
Over time, and several careers, many incidents have flavored the plots of her stories. Man’s cruelty and ingenuity for torment and torture is boundless, not contained by an infinite imagination. Witnessing the after-effects of a teenager mugged at knifepoint for a pair of tennis shoes, or an elderly woman stabbed repeatedly with a screwdriver for no apparent reason, left an indelible impression that will forever haunt her subconscious. In counterpoint, she has observed a woman stop her vehicle in severe, snowy weather to offer her own winter coat to a stranger, a teenager wearing a threadbare hoodie. Life’s diversities are endless.
Though her kids are her life, writing is Reily’s life after. The one enjoyed after the kids are in bed or after they’re in school and the house is quiet. This is the time she kicks back with laptop and lapdog to give her imagination free rein.
In reading, take pleasure in a mental pause as you root for your favorite hero/heroine and bask in their accomplishments, then share your opinions of them over a coffee with your best friend (even if he’s four-legged). Life is short. Cherish your time.

The last blush of twilight relinquished its clutch on the mountain ridge to abandon the diversified splendor of the forest below. Nocturnal predators rose from their lairs, dens, and hollowed perches to scavenge the countryside in hopes of capturing lingering prey reckless enough to tempt the proclivities of fate.
“Michel—anything?” Strong gusts of wind whipped Gryffen’s short, blond curls about his face. His decent through the cloud cover to match speed with Michel left him visible to any creature below.
Gossamer webs of sleep still clung to his mind as Michel flew just under the low, ashen clouds. A light film bathed his face from the weight of their burden, lifted by the breeze of his passage. “No, all’s quiet. But the blood moon’s on the rise.” Soon it would flood the land with its heavy crimson blanket, foreshadowing a braided entanglement of destiny with man’s single-mindedness to survive.
“Hell, we can’t circumvent the prophecy if we can’t find the damned artifact.” Gryffen’s life consisted of one capricious adventure after another, sewn together with a penchant for finding trouble. The temporary lapse in his fun-loving nature signified the seriousness of their mission.
With all the modern technological advances extorted from fate, nothing explained Michel’s ability to defy gravity any more than his telekinetic talent. Yet these skills renewed his enthusiasm for learning and validated his intellectual existence and worth. “Too much mystery surrounds this gem.” A composite of scents and sounds of the forest rose from below to greet Michel in the deepening twilight.
“Yeah, like how do we destroy it? If it’s part of a prophecy, sophisticated safeguards must protect it, probably dark magick. For something so critical, why not send more in its search? Aren’t there a couple others older than dirt—like yourself?”
“Thanks, Gryffen. I miss your sense of humor when you venture off on your hunts. It is unusual for The Brotherhood to withhold information considering the dire repercussions for failure. At least they didn’t object to my enlisting you and Nichasin for assistance.” As an apex predator, Michel enjoyed existence at the top of the food chain and as master of everything within his enhanced sight, yet the deep stillness surrounding them was rank with the niggling portent of evil yet to come.
“Ah, figured I’d lend the old one a helping hand.”
“I’m surprised to see you in this sector…Thought you’d gone caving.” Gryffen’s fascination with caves spanned centuries without the slightest inclination of waning. No surprise he volunteered to search them. Still, his help would shorten the hunt for the artifact.
“Thought I’d check in with you first. I’m still amazed this brotherhood either wouldn’t or couldn’t give you further information. Hell, find and destroy the ruby that will key a prophecy? Sounds pretty shifty, even for them.”
“Yeah, not much help, except the minor detail…I’d probably find it on or near a demon, which will die for its effort.” Hair on his nape stood as if to ward off the virulent tension romping down his spine.
“Only an angel can kill a demon, Michel, and you sure as hell don’t bat for that team. Hey, remember the first time we encountered a dirtball from hell we’d dispatched months earlier? He thought he’d get another shot at a master vamp. The dumb shit.” A slash of moonlight exposed perfect, white teeth in Gryffen’s youthful grin.
“Yeah well, consider the source.”
“Probably won’t see you again tonight. Some of those caves run pretty deep. Happy hunting.” The stiff breeze snatched Gryffen’s last words as he angled toward the saw-tooth profile of his destination.
“Go, have fun. Maybe Providence will grace you with her cutting-edge wisdom.”
“Not in my existence.” Gryffen’s laugh filtered back, thinned by the growing distance and moisture-laden air.
Despite Michel’s studies and commitment to humanity’s protection, a void had rooted in the darkest corners of his mind. Each rising, it surfaced to extort any novelty or anticipation in his automated reality. Duty had always come first, after which he studied whatever snared his attention. Still, he hungered for more—something to chase away the shadows and blisters cauterizing his soul.
Centuries of experience honed him into an expert assassin and tracker for evil’s myriad and divergent forms. Yet each kill left a new stain on his spirit that darkened his aura and took him further from the light of man. Since defeat had never left its toxic breath in his extended history, this mission would prove one more in a long series of significant encounters.
Minutes later, the scent of demon filled his nostrils. Descending to skim the void above the treetops rewarded him with a stronger stench. Whether this demon held the precious artifact or proved another dead end didn’t matter. Its removal fell among his duties as an ancient vampire and benefactor to humans, a win-win situation in the grand scheme of things.

Michael
I fucked up. In every single way imaginable. I’ve let down everyone I’ve ever cared about. Now, I’m determined to make it right.
I’m back, and I’m totally at the mercy of Shriller and Jax, family friends.
And her.
The one woman I’m convinced will be the end of me. The toughest addiction I’ve ever faced.

Dani
Desperation is a funny thing. Out of college with no job and slowly running out of money, I’m the epitome of desperate.
Desperate to prove myself. Desperate not to be the spoiled girl with daddy issues.
Desperate enough to take a job that’ll push me to my breaking point.
I can do this. I have to.
I just have to keep reminding myself not to fall for the charming, damaged boy-turned-man who holds secrets deeper than I could have ever imagined.
