JUNE 5, 2018

When Caroline Forbes awoke this morning, in modern-day Mystic Falls, she had no clue that an ancient sorceress would lay claim to her twin girls. With the help of Bonnie, of the powerful Bennett witch order, they discover the only way to sever the sorceresses’ hold is to travel back in time.

With no other choice, Caroline travels to nineteenth-century Mystic Falls – an era where vampires are savagely hunted and witches must hide. This dangerous quest leads her on a path for a second-chance romance with the notorious vampire Niklaus Mikaelson, an Original. She must deny her feelings in order to ventures into perilous terrain, not only to save her daughters but to survive.

About Dormaine G.

Dormaine was born in Long Island, New York where she lived most of her life. As an adult she liked to travel out of the country though her favorite places to explore were her fantasy worlds as an author. She may be a nurse by profession but her heart has always belonged to writing. As a young child she spent many Saturdays in the library nurturing her love for books. There she discovered her fascination for the science fiction genre, through books, movies and graphic novels.

Now she resides in Colorado with her husband and two feisty dogs. After many years of working in hospitals and travel nursing she took time off to pursue a career in writing. Her first novel “Connor” is in one of her favorite genres, young adult urban fantasy. Her second love is for horror of which she created the “Madame Lilly, Voodoo Priestess” series. This is just the start of her exploration as she stays locked up her office in Colorado spinning more tales.

While all of Caroline Forbes’s friends have moved on with their lives, she has remained frozen in her seventeen-year old body. No longer free to roam around Mystic Falls because of her unchanging looks, she starts to feel bound by her thoughts and emotions.

All through the years, she tried not to think of Stefan Salvatore and the future she could have had with him. A chance confrontation with a gang of teens in the cemetery changes that.

A boy with Stefan’s face emerges from the shadows. Caroline knows it is not really him but can’t stop her heart from feeling every emotion he brought out within her. To make matters worse, he brought an old foe with him.

Will Caroline finally get her happily ever after or will fate snatch it away yet again?

Read the story that takes place twenty years after the events of the hit TV series finale of The Vampire Diaries.

Hell hath no fury like a shadow from the underworld.

Caroline Forbes prides herself on being the quirky vampire always prepared with a plan. Now that she’s running the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted, she’s starting to think she might be in over her head. Still grieving the loss of her husband Stefan, Caroline is slowly slipping into the darkness hidden behind her radiant smile. Against her better judgement, she seeks comfort in all the wrong places, in all the wrong people—one in particular.

Niklaus Mikaelson, the original vampire-werewolf hybrid and notorious bad boy doesn’t hesitate to answer Caroline’s cry for help. Old feelings are stirred and the temptation is impossible to ignore. Klaus and Caroline give in, losing themselves in a heated romance that could burn a thousand forests.

Enraptured by their world of passion, they ignore everyone around them. The neglect leads Caroline’s twin girls to do the unthinkable—they perform a spell, unleashing the shadows from the underworld. These shadows are malevolent, angry, and seeking revenge, leaving the townspeople in grave danger.

Can Caroline and Klaus fall back down to reality in time to save Mystic Falls from the shadows? Or will their whirlwind romance cost them everything?

When she’s not saving lives, coming up with her next plot twist or making women feel pretty and pampered, she’s spending time with family and friends.

When the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted received an urgent message from Siberia, I jumped at the chance to go check it out. Sure I was going to miss my twin daughters with every fiber of my being but I was dying, no pun intended, to get out of Mystic Falls. Even if it was only for a surveillance mission. A romantic interlude was the last thing on my mind when I said goodbye to my family but that’s exactly what I found.

Had I known Klaus Mikaelson was going to be in Russia, I never would have offered to go investigate the string of mysterious deaths. But leave it to me, Caroline Forbes, to find the silver lining.  Maybe having an Original vampire on my side could help me solve the mystery and return home that much faster. The only thing standing in my way is my attraction to a man I should never have been attracted to in the first place.

About DJ Shaw

Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1977, DJ Shaw was 17 before she was able to see most of the United States. When she was 17, she decided to join the fair, traveling with them to Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Once the fair arrived in Lake Charles, DJ had decided it was time to go home, that she had had enough of traveling with the fair. She much rather preferred to sit around writing, or even telling, the lives of the people who lived in her head. She had been good at story-telling from the time she was about ten, when she scared herself so bad with her story of the Boogey-man that she couldn’t move off her bed. Her siblings would come to her for their scare fix, because they knew she could come up with something on the spot.

Having found what she loved to do at an early age, she continued to write down her stories and any poetry that came into her head. She had stacks upon stacks of notebooks filled with her work. Her love of horror movies made her stories that much more chilling.

When she’s not writing, she’s listening to music, supporting her favorite adopted brother and his band “Traveler in Pain”, playing with her five children, spending time with her husband of seven years or watching horror movies in the middle of the night just for the scare factor.

But Rory sees a solution through the added complication of Nick’s feelings for Andrew.

Rory Gallagher

Rory has loved Nick for years, and for years he’s feared losing the man he loves. But solidifying a relationship with a switch wouldn’t be fair because Rory won’t give up top spot for anyone. When Nick confides in him about his feelings Andrew, his heart nearly breaks. He hates seeing Nick so conflicted. Rory would do anything for Nick, including enter into the most complicated relationship of his life.

Arabella’s Taming by Golden Angel will be here May 29th!

FOLLOW ANGEL FOR RELEASE ALERTS → http://bit.ly/2G68e3O

BLURB:

Lady Arabella Windham, sister to the Duke of Manchester, has given up on ever attracting the positive attention of Lord Thomas Hood. After discovering he still sees her as the same hoydenish young woman she was in the past, no matter her current perfectly ladylike behavior, and realizing she will never match up to his infamous list of attributes for a wife, she throws caution to the wind and becomes more reckless than ever.

Why bother being good if it’s not going to even be noticed, much less acknowledged?

When her return to feckless and indiscreet behavior results in disgrace however, it’s Lord Thomas Hood who is caught up in the scandal with her. With a strong-willed bride determined to make her new husband dance to her tune and a stubborn lord determined to curb his new wife’s imprudent ways, is a happily-ever-after even possible?

Despite being part of a series, Arabella’s Taming may be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

ENJOY THIS STEAMY EXCERPT!

Perhaps she shouldn’t have been so forward, but Arabella didn’t see the point in pretending. She understood exactly what was to happen and she was rather looking forward to it. Perhaps she should have been pretending more ignorance? But where was the attraction in that?

He should be grateful he didn’t have to explain anything to her. Grateful she wasn’t horrified or shocked or disgusted by the idea. Granted, she’d been a little of all three when she’d first learned what happened between a man and a woman in the bedchamber – especially some of the salacious details her friends had let fall – but she’d moved past those initial reactions. Knowing there was inexpressible pleasure at the end of the proceedings, and sometimes before, had helped a great deal.

Their wedding night would be a good deal less fun if she’d just learned about what they were meant to do and had no idea that there would be a reward for indulging in what still sounded like a rather awkward business.

Although she was beginning to understand some of what her friends meant. With Thomas’ lips on hers, his arms circled around her waist and holding her up, one hand already sliding down towards her bottom, and the strange hardness of his groin pressing into her belly, she didn’t feel awkward at all. She felt hot, almost itchy, like her skin was too tight and she wanted to rub herself all over him. There was an ache deep inside of her, and she knew exactly what was supposed to fill it even though she didn’t know how it would feel.

His tongue slid into her mouth, his hand moving down to cup her bottom, and Arabella moaned as heat and need shot through her. It felt like her skin had become exquisitely sensitive.

When Thomas’ lips pulled away from hers, she almost protested, but instead of really pulling away he was just moving them… across her jawline… to her neck… goodness, she’d had no idea her neck was so sensitive. She tipped her head back, giving him full access to her throat, clinging to his shoulders as he left a line of burning kisses across
her skin.

“What did your friends tell you about tonight?” He murmured the question, his voice deep and sensual.

Arabella blinked, trying to think as his hands began to roam along with his mouth. Her breasts felt swollen and heavy and her entire body shuddered as the hand not caressing her bottom cupped her right breast.

“Um… oh my… they said… they said you would put your cock in me… in my… between my legs,” she managed to get out, suddenly feeling shy. At least, shy about using any of the words she might use for exactly where he was going to put his cock. “And maybe my mouth… my bottom…”

The hand on her bottom tightened immediately, pulling her even harder against him as he moaned against the sensitive skin between her shoulder and her neck. She shuddered as he rocked his hips against her, very aware of exactly how much he liked that idea. Arabella was almost sorry she’d brought it up – the reports from the other ladies had been mixed at best.

Yet Thomas’ reaction almost made her want to try…

Somehow the idea seemed much more appealing in this moment, while she was in his arms, feeling the full force of his ardor.

“Anything else?” he asked, practically grating the words out.

The words slipped out of her mouth then. Words she definitely hadn’t meant to say, because she still thought her friends were mad for their insistence it could be fun, even enjoyable.

“They said you might spank me,” she whispered. “And that I might like it.”

Summary

Landon can’t believe he’s let himself get roped into participating in a charity calendar, let alone one that features tastefully photographed nudes. The genius physicist is hardly model material and he’s dreading the nude part of the photoshoot. Amid his reluctance, the one bright spot is his emails back and forth with the photographer.

However, Bailey ends up being not quite what Landon expects, and their first meeting is decidedly awkward. Bailey’s persistent though, and gradually Landon warms to the burly photographer, and they discover they have a shared love of gamer culture.

A tentative friendship is born, but the road from friends to lovers isn’t easy. Landon’s battling past trauma and must decide how much of a risk he’s willing to take. A sexy connection may not be enough to keep them together unless both are willing to put their hearts on the line.

Approximately 40,000 words. Previously released as part of the EXPOSED anthology, and loosely linked to the #Gaymers universe, this friends-to-lovers, hurt/comfort story stands alone with a guaranteed happy ending. Contains a brief mention of a prior assault, but no on-screen violence or flashbacks.

LEVEL UP EXCERPT—This is their first kiss, because I absolutely love writing first kiss scenes!

***

Bailey was the type who moved a lot as he gamed, biceps flexing, knees wiggling, shoulders jostling. Landon always liked people who got so into gaming, but it was more than a little distracting. His body was quickly coming to associate that orange scent of Bailey’s with good things, and other parts of him apparently liked Bailey’s nearness, which was a novelty because instead of intimidated, as he would have expected, he was more than a little turned on.

“Oh man, that was a rush.” Bailey laughed as both of their health meters dipped to zero. “I’m almost wishing I’d gone into game art, not photography. Amazing how these graphics have held up over the years.”

“Totally. And speaking of art, let me find the Space Villager stuff.” Landon reluctantly stepped away from the game. He headed to the nearby kitchen, where he was pretty the papers were buried with a stack of mail. Paper control was not his strong suit. “You’ll go nuts at the latest screen shots and promo teasers.”

“Cool.” Rather than follow Landon, Bailey went to sit on the couch.

“You want a drink while I’m in here?” Landon called to him after he found the papers under a pile of pizza ads. “I’ve got four flavors of Snapple, soda, and water.”

“Surprise me with a Snapple flavor.” Bailey looked right at home on Landon’s couch, lounging back.

He really did not look at all like any photographer Landon had ever met, and curiosity had him asking, “So why photography? You said you could have done game design?”

“Yeah, I had plenty of friends at the art institute go that direction. But I’ve been in love with photography ever since I worked on our middle school yearbook. I figured out quickly that taking pictures of events and sports was far more fun than trying to do the sports myself, so I did yearbook all through high school, got a photography scholarship to the art institute in Portland.”

“So you don’t play a sport?” Landon had a hard time believing that. With Bailey’s height and breadth, he totally looked like he lived for weekend games of some type.

“Nope. Hopelessly uncoordinated.” Bailey shot him an endearing smile when Landon handed him the bottle of tea.

“Me too.” Landon clinked bottles with him, then held up the papers. “Found the codes. But can I show you some stuff on the TV screen while you have your drink?”

“Absolutely.” Bailey took a long swig of tea, and Landon had to look away before he got mesmerized by Bailey’s full mouth, how it looked when his tongue chased a stray drop of moisture, how pink it was in contrast to his paler skin and brown beard.

Landon queued up the pre-release trailer Josiah had sent him a link to. Bombastic music filled his small living room as on the screen, and a spaceship pulled in for a landing on a planet filled with ruins of a once-powerful civilization. The narrator had an iconic voice and detailed all the special features of the expansion pack. Landon had already watched this a half-dozen times, and it still gave him happy chills.

“Wow. I can’t wait.” Bailey looked suitably awed. “This is even cooler than when War Elf added the mystic raids.”

“I know, right? Now look at the in-game screen shots.” He brought up another video, body relaxing more and more despite Bailey’s nearness. It was just so awesome to have someone new to share this with. He’d been hyped about this all week, but Pike was distracted by his boyfriend Zack’s deployment, Savannah didn’t game much, and the rest of his regular crew seemed to have other things occupying their attention.

Somehow, as he shared more video clips, he drifted closer to Bailey, so that their knees were almost rubbing. It wasn’t a giant couch, so there wasn’t a ton of room to move back, but even so, Landon wasn’t looking for an escape. He was aware of Bailey, very much so, but not nearly as freaked out as he’d been a few hours ago. Instead, his senses seemed to soak up Bailey’s scent and nearness, and it wasn’t until the fourth or fifth video that he realized that he was aroused.

Clink. Somehow Landon’s left hand, holding his drink, and Bailey’s right hand tangled.

“Oops.” He tried to extricate himself without spilling both beverages. Bending to put his on the floor, he hadn’t realized that Bailey had also leaned down until their heads collided.

“Ow,” they said simultaneously.

“Oh my gosh. I’m so sorry.” Bailey reached out, feeling around on Landon’s head. “Did you see stars? Break the skin?”

“I’m fine.” Landon didn’t pull away. Bailey’s hand felt damn nice. Gentle. Soothing more than just the bump on his head. Their eyes met, and he really needed to move back, break this spell, but he didn’t, instead leaning into to the touch. Bailey’s eyes darkened, and he stroked down Landon’s jaw. God, that felt so good, like an extra blanket on a chilly night, warmth he hadn’t realized he was missing. How long had it been since he’d been touched like this? Hugged, sure. He’d hugged Savannah goodnight, and hugged and wrestled around with his best friend Pike at the last LAN party, but neither of those things was touch like this. Caring. Sweet. Arousing.

Bailey leaned in again, way slower this time, all the time in the world for Landon to stop him. But he didn’t. Bailey’s beard tickled an instant before their lips met, a soft slide of mouths. Not aggressive at all, not the on-a-tight-schedule rush of a hookup, Bailey kissed like they had a sleepy Sunday afternoon to kill, like each reaction of Landon’s mattered, like he was trying to memorize something important and was going to take his time learning the lesson.

Landon was the first one to take things further, mouth opening on a sigh, welcoming Bailey’s agile tongue. He tasted sweet, like tea, and minty like the gum he’d popped after the pizza, familiar yet new at the same time. How had he managed to forget how awesome kissing could be? A laugh bubbled up in his chest, but quickly transformed to a groan of pleasure as Bailey nipped at his lower lip.

Not content to let Bailey be the one exploring, Landon sent his own tongue on a quest, tracing Bailey’s full lower lip, delving inside to rub tongues, retreating playfully to earn another nip. Fuck. This was nice. The video switched over to something random, and he barely registered it. He couldn’t say how long they kissed, just that he didn’t want it to ever end.

STORY EXCERPT

The man slumped in his chair, eyes down on something on the table, and Dallan wished he’d look up so he could see the man’s eyes. Suddenly, he lifted his head, giving Dallan a good view of his profile. His nose was a little long, and his lips were just shy of full. Then, the young man turned his head and Dallan caught sight of sky-blue eyes that held curiosity.

The baby face was smooth with a barely noticeable scar across the right cheek. He was simply dressed in a light-blue button-down shirt and a loosely knotted red tie.

Dallan’s gaze washed over the male’s face again, carefully drinking him in once more, and that’s when their eyes collided. It was like a sucker punch to the solar plexus. His stomach tightened and his power tensed and shot up like water through a spout fountain. His heart raced and he felt like a schoolboy laying eyes on a crush.

Dallan did a mental double take because it had been a very long time since any sweet young thing had made his heart rush or his breath catch. Looking to admire, because he did love to look at beautiful and attractive men, had turned into looking to devour.

The hunger must be rolling off him in powerful waves, because the other man looked away briefly and then back again. Dallan’s gaze was drawn to the bow lips as they fell apart, and his dick twitched. His mind painted a picture for him of those lips stretched around his cock as they sucked him past them.

And then the man’s little pink tongue darted out to lightly moisten his bottom lip. The simple act sent Dallan’s body into a full hard-on.

Oh, fuck yeah.

He loved men of all shades and found something to like in all features, but Dallan had to admit this one was very appealing. And he was flirting without truly trying.

Dallan got to his feet and moved with catlike grace toward the other man’s table. He kept his eyes on the stranger, who couldn’t seem to look away now either despite the peel of feminine laughter that grated over his nerves from a nearby table. Dallan rested one hand on a vacant chair and the other he slid into his slacks pocket.

“Good afternoon.” Dallan was well aware that not every man he saw was gay, but he wasn’t afraid of taking a chance, especially since he had the magical might as well as the physical strength to defend himself from a pissed-off straight guy. “May I join you?”

“Uh—” The object of his interest looked around briefly.

“Is your girlfriend one of those ladies over there?” Dallan asked, and blue eyes jerked back to his, snapping with a bit of ire. “Or are they more your type than I am?”

The other man’s eyes lit with a bit of humor. “Not really.”

Dallan pulled out the chair and sat down without breaking eye contact. “I’ll take that as a yes then for now,” Dallan drawled. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Hansel.”

“Dallan,” he introduced smoothly. “Why isn’t your boyfriend joining you for lunch? With a pretty face like yours, I’d be hard-pressed to allow you to dine in public alone.”

Hansel’s lips curved into a smile that made his eyes spark with mischief. “You’d just keep me locked up like a prisoner?” he drawled, keeping his voice low.

Dallan leaned toward him, his lips spreading into a slow grin. “It would be a thought.”

“And leave me to eat alone?” Hansel added, those blue eyes still dancing with mirth.

“Hardly,” Dallan murmured. “I’d just be worried about you having to fend off so many men and women.”

Hansel laughed, and a swirl of darker blue turned Hansel’s eyes sodalite. The color bespoke of one of the intriguing jewel witches. Their magick was expelled in shades that matched the color of their eyes, and their eye color was a mood indicator. The darker the shade, the more amused and in good humor they were. The paler shades indicated anger or confusion.

“I get my share of attention, but I’d be the one worried.”

“About what?”

Hansel leaned forward, elbow on the table. “About you being unfaithful to me. All the hot men I’ve ever known seem to have trouble keeping it in their pants.”

His words were laced with a hint of anger, and Dallan wanted to throttle every man who’d ever hurt this ray of sunshine.

“Sounds like you’ve been played a time or two,” Dallan replied quietly.

“Once or twice, yeah,” Hansel admitted with a shrug. “But who hasn’t?”

“I’m not that guy, Hansel,” Dallan said softly. “In fact, the only playing I’d be doing is with you. I bet you’d be a feast spread out for me every night.”

Hansel looked down at the table where Dallan’s right hand lay facedown, and then back up at Dallan. “Are you one of those guys who got married to hide being gay? I mean, I don’t—you’re keeping your other hand out of sight, so I can’t tell if you’re wearing a ring, not that it means much these days.”

“I’m not married.” Dallan held his left hand up, revealing dark brown skin with copper undertones and short neat nails. “That’s not how I roll, Hansel. Those kinds of games are for little boys and bastards. If all I want is one night, I just tell a guy that up front so he can make an informed decision.”

Chapter One
CHARLIE
Charlie
blinked blearily at the sliver of sunshine coming through the window where it
wasn’t boarded up. The sun was setting. Another day gone.
He looked
at the wall where he’d just finished scratching a line into the cinderblock
with his fingernail, briefly glancing up the wall at all the similar hash
marks.
Three
months. It had been over three months since he’d woken up in this very
room—covered in his own blood, with a headache so bad he’d been convinced he
was gonna die. He had no idea where he was. A tiny office in a really old
building, he thought. Cream-colored painted cinderblock walls. It had an
institutional feel. Maybe a hospital?
There was a
thick wooden door with a tiny rectangular plexiglass window, but all it showed
was the end of a dark alcove, so no clues there. Through the tiny bit he could
see through the outdoor window, he could only see the plumbing of another
building.
When he’d
first woken up, part of him had wanted to just give up and die. Because no
matter how many times he shouted questions at the guards who occasionally
delivered food and water, no one would tell him anything about his sister
Audrey.
Had those
bastards killed her right there by the spring where they’d knocked him out? Or
did she manage to run away after all?
In the end,
he’d fought for consciousness and clung to life as hard as he could. Because
what if she was here? What if these motherfuckers had her too? What if they
were—
He cut that
line of thought off just like he did every time it sprang up. He’d go fucking
insane if he let himself go there.
Voices
sounded in the hallway and he scrambled to his feet. Well, as much as he could
with the handcuffs and connected ankle fetters. He shuffled hunchbacked toward
the door and the small plexiglass window.
And saw her.
He thought
she was a mirage the first time she came and pushed his tray of moldy bread and
sour mush through the skinny two-inch rectangular hole that had been sawed in
the door.
She was
tiny with long dark hair, wearing a faded white dress. Like some sort of
angelic apparition.
But then
she got closer and he saw that no, she was a flesh and bone woman. Because
surely an angel wouldn’t be walking with a limp and have a black eye and a
split lip.
She refused
to approach with the tray until he backed up to the opposite wall. Then she
slid it through and ran away as fast as she could.
Charlie
couldn’t even be mad that the tasteless bowl of mush spilled all over the
floor. If he were her, he wouldn’t voluntarily get within three feet of a man
either.
He hadn’t
spent the last eight years hiding Audrey away from the world for nothing. Which
was when it hit him—Audrey. If Audrey
was here, this woman might know her.
It was all
he could think about. So the next time the woman came, he ran for the door and
started firing questions. “Do you know a girl named Audrey? She would have been
brought here the same time I was. Two months ago.”
The woman
had been so startled by his voice she’d dropped his tray and fled.
“Wait!”
he’d shouted after her. “Audrey. Do you know her? She’s my sister. Please!”
But all he
heard was the sound of rapidly fleeing footsteps. And then nothing.
She didn’t
come back for three days.
It wasn’t
unusual to go that long between meals. They gave him a gallon of water once
or—if he was lucky—sometimes twice a week. But meals were hit or miss.
Still, the
next time he heard light footsteps approaching, he backed away to the furthest
wall and raised his hands in surrender.
He didn’t
dare say a word. If Audrey was here,
this girl could be the key to getting information about her and he wasn’t going
to fuck it up again.
She was
cautious as she approached. Hesitant.
He waited
patiently as he could manage.
She shoved
the tray through the hole, sending the bowl splattering again, and then ran
away.
As much as
it killed him, he did the same thing the next three times she came.
And on the
fourth, he said in his calmest, gentlest voice, “I won’t hurt you.”
She
startled so much she almost dropped the tray again.
But she
didn’t make a run for it.
Considering
that a win, he continued, still not moving from the wall and keeping his hands
up and visible. “My name’s Charlie.”
He didn’t
push any further than that.
She didn’t
say a word. Just shoved his tray through and skittered away.
But the
next time, he started talking about Audrey. “I have a sister about your age.
Her name’s Audrey. She drove me crazy growing up. Little sisters, you know?
Always coming in my room and bothering me and my friends when we were playing
video games. Trying to tag along when I’d go to the mall.” He shook his head.
“Jesus, it feels like a million years ago.”
The woman
hadn’t bolted. The tray was paused halfway through the slot.
Charlie
didn’t move an inch but he kept talking.
“Dad and I
couldn’t believe how lucky we were when all the girls and women in town got
sick but she stayed healthy. It was like a miracle.” Charlie huffed out a sad
laugh. And then, when the woman still didn’t leave, he told her about what
happened with his dad and the mob that came to the front door, and how he
escaped with Audrey out back.
“She’s dead
now?”
Her voice
was so soft at first Charlie thought he might have imagined it.
He sat up
straighter and she flinched backwards, tray clattering against the slot as she
yanked it back.
“Sorry,
sorry,” Charlie said, chains rattling as he lifted his cuffed hands again and
put his back flush with the wall. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I— I don’t know
where she is. She was with me when—” He swallowed, looking down. “The men from
here, they attacked us when we were getting water.” He lifted his eyes to hers
where she watched him warily through the plexiglass. “I thought if they brought
me here, then maybe they brought her too.”
Her eyes
dropped and Charlie’s heartbeat sped up. What did that mean?
“Is she
here? Do you know her?”
Her eyes
flicked back up to his. “A lot of girls come through here.”
Nausea hit
Charlie fast and hard. She was confirming his worst fears. No, his worst fear
was that Audrey was dead. But what this woman was describing was a close
second.
It was an
open secret that girls were trafficked all over the territories. The President
had officially outlawed it, but there was a reason Charlie chose to stay with
Audrey in an underground bunker for almost a decade. Law and order were so far
from a reality yet, it was fucking laughable. The old wild west looked like a
picnic compared to the Texas of today, and Texas was actually way better than
most places.
Charlie bit
his cheek against the million questions he wanted to ask. Don’t press it. She’s just opening up. Push too hard and she could bolt
again
.
But then
those big doe eyes of hers blinked up at him again. “I could maybe… ask
around.”
“Yeah?” The
word came out half-strangled. Was she really just— Just offering like that when
he’d— “Cause that would be— It’d be fuckin— Sorry, I just, it would mean
everything—”
“I’m not
promising anything,” she said sharply. Then, as if she’d just remembered the
tray in her hands, she gestured down to it with her eyes. “Here. Take this.”
And, though
she watched him warily, she stood still as he approached. He came slow,
careful. She was skittish as a deer. When he got close enough to take the tray,
he saw her hand was shaking.
And for the
first time since she’d shown up, he thought about her. Really thought about her, and not just in relation to the info she
might be able to get him on Audrey. What was life here like for her? She said
girls came through. But not her? She obviously had some sort of position here.
Maid? Servant? Slave?
While her
split lip was healing, she had a fresh bruise on her cheek.
“Who hurts
you?”
Her eyes
shot up to his through the glass and he realized too late how harsh the
question had come out.
He didn’t
apologize, though. Or look away. For a second, neither did she.
In spite of
the bruise and her too pale skin, she was undeniably beautiful. So, so fucking
beautiful. She had huge, translucent blue eyes that looked far too sad for the
rest of her angelic face.
What the
fuck had happened to this girl to bring her here?
“I have to
go,” she whispered. “If I can find anything out about your sister, I will.”
And then
she was gone.
She didn’t
come back for a week. The longest goddamned week of Charlie’s life. And when
she did, she didn’t have any news about Audrey.
“It doesn’t
mean she’s not here, though,” Shay whispered.
Shay.
That was
her name. Like the sound of a sigh.
“Travis
Territory is big and there are several processing facilities.”
All
thoughts of beautiful names and sighs fled at that. Charlie’s blood went ice
cold.
Processing.
Facilities.
For.
Women.
Even though
he hadn’t eaten in a week he wasn’t sure he was gonna be able to get down the
food on the tray Shay brought.
“But I’ll
keep asking around,” she rushed to add, obviously seeing her words upset him.
One of the
guards who came through sometimes walked by then so she yanked back and
scurried away.
And it
continued like that for weeks. Quick, stolen conversations broken up by long,
endless days of nothing.
But during
the moments she was there, Jesus, it was more than a lifeline. Charlie lived
for the sound of her soft footsteps on the tile outside his door.
Though she
didn’t yet have any information on Audrey, Shay filled in so many gaps. He was
being held in Travis Territory. To the southeast of what used to be Austin,
Travis Territory centered around a township where a good-sized river sprang up
from the Edwards Aquifer. Before the Fall, Charlie had even visited the place.
You used to be able to take glass-bottomed boat tours on the river and watch
the springs bubbling up from the source waters.
And now it
was home to one of the most powerful and corrupt governors in the country.
Arnold Travis.
The
building where Charlie was being held used to be a faculty office in the
English building of the old college campus.
The one
thing Shay wouldn’t talk about, though?
Herself.
Anytime
Charlie asked anything about her, she clammed up and scurried off. So he
learned not to. Because every second talking to her through the door was like
being able to breathe after days starved for oxygen.
Thinking of
their brief moments together helped get him through the hard days.
And there
were plenty of hard days.
Because as
much as he tried to hold out hope, in his darkest moments, it was too easy to
believe the worst about Audrey. They’d been in the middle of fucking nowhere
when they’d gotten ambushed. Even if Travis’s men didn’t get her, what were her
chances out there all alone in the world?
She wasn’t
even safe on her own Uncle’s fucking
property.
Some days,
if not for Shay, it would have been too easy to give into the dark thoughts.
Take this week for instance.
Audrey’s
twenty-third birthday was coming up in a couple weeks and he couldn’t get this
one memory out of his head. Audrey’d been maybe six and it was before the Fall.
Before Xterminate, before any of it.
He was
eight and playing with his friends in the backyard. He’d already told her to go
away but instead she just went over to the swing set and started swinging,
staring longingly at him and his buddies where they were playing armies by the
back fence.
Little
sisters were so annoying, he
remembered thinking.
He’d been
climbing a tree when all the sudden she started up an unholy wailing. Just
looking for attention, like always. He shook his head and ignored her, climbing
higher.
But she
just kept crying, louder and louder until she was screaming bloody murder. He
kept waiting for Dad to come out of the garage and take care of it, but he must
have had that stupid old rock music he liked playing. And Dad had made him promise to look out for his
sister for the afternoon.
So with a
huff, he climbed down from the tree and went over to the swing set, face
flaming in embarrassment at having his friends see him have to deal with his
sister who was such a freaking baby. She
was seven but here she was wailing her head off like a two-year-old.
She was
even laying on the ground by the swing set, like she’d thrown herself on the
ground to throw a full out tantrum.
“Come on,
Audrey,” he muttered as soon as he got close. She just wailed even louder. He
rolled his eyes and knelt down on the ground beside her. Her face was cherry
red and fat tears ran down her cheeks.
“Audrey,
stop crying.” He hated it when she cried. It was loud and well… he just didn’t
like it. “Come on, sit up.” He held out a hand and hiccupping, she took it. He
put his other hand to the back of her head and helped her sit up.
“All right.
You’re okay now. Calm down. It’s okay.”
And then he
pulled his hand away from the back of her head.
It was
covered in blood.
Like, covered.
Blood
dripped off his fingers, even.
Charlie’s
stomach cramped just at the memory. He’d been playing with his friends, having fun, and she’d been lying there,
seriously hurt. Crying—no, screaming for
him—and he’d just ignored it, for what? Five minutes?
The sound
of those screams kept him awake at night. Filling the silence of his office
prison.
Look out for your sister.
His Dad had made him promise the same thing he
had so long ago when the bad times came. No
matter what happens to me, look out for your sister
. And Charlie had sworn,
sworn, both to his dad and to himself,
that he would never fail her again like he had that day in the backyard.
But he had. And ten thousand times worse.
Because whatever she was going through right
now, wherever she was, wouldn’t be solved by a trip to the emergency room and
twelve stitches to the back of the head.
And he was stuck in this fifteen-by-ten-foot
room, fucking useless. She was out
there, with God knew what happening to her, screaming and screaming for his
help and he couldn’t get to her—
“Let go of me. This is for the prisoner!”
Shay.
Charlie
jerked to attention and ran to the door, ankle fetters yanking taut and
tripping him halfway there. He hit his knees hard but then stumbled back to his
feet and scrambled to the door.
Just in
time to see the big, bald guard who sometimes patrolled yank the tray of food
out of Shay’s hand and then backhand her.
“No!”
Charlie roared, pounding the door with his fist. “Shay!”
Her body
was knocked to the ground where she lay crumpled like a ragdoll. “Shay!”
The bald
bastard nudged her with his big, booted toe, then chuckled and walked off, tray
in hand.
Charlie was
about to pound at the door again but fisted his hands and bit back his curse.
Because goddammit, he didn’t want to do anything to bring the guard back. Yet
again, he was fucking useless. Another woman he cared about was laying out
there hurt and he was here, just feet away, and he couldn’t do a goddamned thing to help her.
As soon as
the guard’s footsteps were gone, he dropped to his knees to look through the
tray slot.
“Shay.
Shay! Can you hear me? Are you okay?”
But she
just laid there.
Fucking
lifeless.
Fuck. FUCK.
Charlie
grabbed at his hair, wanting to yank it out by the roots and—
But then he
heard a noise.
The
smallest groan.
“Shay!” He
smashed his face to the hole in the wall and thank God. She was moving. He
shoved his fingers through the small slot. “Shay, Jesus, are you okay?”
What the fuck, obviously she’s not okay.
“Sorry,
that’s stupid. Can you sit up?”
She rolled
over and dragged her body further into the little alcove where the office was,
out of the path of the main hallway.
When she
finally sat up, he expected tears. He expected a bitter grimace. He even
expected to see blood.
And she did
have a fresh split lip, blood trickling down from the corner of her mouth.
But what he
didn’t expect?
For her to
be fucking smiling.
She was
grinning. Huge.
“Shay?”
Charlie asked uncertainly. “Are you feeling okay? He hit you pretty hard.”
When a
small giggle escaped her lips, Charlie really started getting worried. But then
she hopped to her feet.
And when
she came near, there was a light in her eyes he’d never seen before.
“Shay,
what’s going—”
“I know
where Audrey is.”
Charlie
coughed in shock, hand going to the plexiglass. “Where? Is she okay? Who has
h—”
“Back up.”
Shay gestured impatiently for him to move back.
He frowned,
totally fucking bewildered.
“Back up.”
He took a
couple steps away from the door.
That’s when
her grin got even wider, though he wouldn’t have thought that was possible.
And, with one quick glance back toward the hallway, she produced a keyring,
holding it up briefly so he could see through the plexiglass.
Holy sh—
He didn’t
even have time to finish the thought before he heard the click of the lock
turning. Then the door pushed open.
He could
only stare in shock as Shay slipped inside. Her dark head was bowed as she
flipped through keys on the keyring. Then she reached for his hands.
“Shay,” he
gasped. “How did you—”
She didn’t
look up from unlocking the shackles around his wrists. “I stole them off Carl
when he was grabbing for the tray. I’d scrounged up some butter for your bread
and made sure to pass by him. I knew he wouldn’t be able to resist.”
“But he hit you.”
Shay just
shrugged it off as if it was nothing. She got his wrists free and then dropped
to his feet. The sight of her, crouched down at his feet, was just too much.
“Shay,
Shay, stop.”
Charlie
leaned down and put his hands on hers, taking the keys.
Those endless
blue eyes of hers flashed. “I know where Audrey is. And I’ll tell you.” Then
her face went flinty with determination. “As long as you help me get the hell
out of here.”
He felt his
eyebrows shoot to his hairline. This woman was full of surprises. But everything
she was saying was music to his fucking ears.
“You’ve got
a deal.”
In another
half minute, he had the shackles off his feet. The chains dropped to the floor
and he stood fully upright for the first time in three months.
Then he
reached out a hand to Shay.
“Let’s go.”

Two people with completely different lives…
One moment in time that will alter their worlds forever…
One thing in common… The dark web.

Brian Abbot is broken. Grief has twisted his heart for the past two years, rooting itself in the very core of him like a disease, making every day a struggle. Sending not only his heart but his mind into the darkest of places. He’s ready to end it all. Ready to fall into oblivion and be punished for what he’s done.

Megan Archer is a recovering cocaine addict and ex-whore working the dark web as Chastity Noir, fulfilling dark and unusual fantasy’s that can’t be satisfied so easily on the surface web. She thinks she’s finally finding her feet. That is until she’s in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now, she’s fearing for her life.

Two people with completely different lives…
One moment in time that will alter their worlds forever…
One thing in common… The dark web.

Are you ready to step into an encrypted network of dark and disturbing things? Are you ready to enter the black-market that offers everything you could possibly imagine? A place where even the most psychotic of minds can be shocked?

Very few have the nerve to visit such a place, but when they do, there’s no turning back.
