She was taking a sip of her coffee to wash down the donut when she snorted a muffled laugh. She put her hand to her mouth, trying not to spew it everywhere. “Well, you were the one out driving around in a near-hurricane, dude!”

“Well, I got no defense there.” I took her in. Those eyes. That smile. The fun-loving giggle. You couldn’t help but like her. She reminded me of an ex-flower child, still clinging to those naïve beliefs that peace, hope and love would change the world. I could picture her somewhere in a past life with daisy embroidery on faded jeans, sporting round-lensed shades, and a paisley bandanna tied around that beautiful head of hair. I don’t know why I got that feeling, but it was overwhelming. Maybe it was the way she talked, the whole retro thing, the simple, basic goodness that was her aura, I guess. I had seen others who played at the whole hippie, Boho, counterculture way of living. With most, it was more about fashion, music, and an excuse not to work than anything else. With Sadie, you just got the sense there was not an ounce of bullshit in her body. She was the real deal.

She sat up and looked me dead straight in the eye, all pretense of flirting over now, as desire turned her pretty face intense, hungry. “Do you believe in karma, Dylan?”

I sighed. “I dunno what I believe sometimes.”

She leaned forward, moving toward me now on her hands and knees. “I do,” she said, her voice turning low and sultry, her eyes determined, unflinching. “I believe everything happens for a reason in this crazy world.”

Shit! She was coming for me, and alarm bells were going off inside my head like it was Judgement Day. I knew if I was going to do what was right, the window for that was quickly closing.

She came up on me now, straddling my left leg as she moved in against me. I felt myself swell again! The window was closing!

“I believe two very lonely people can be brought together from two totally different walks of life.” Closing! Closing! Her delicate fingers found my wrists and she moved my hands to her waist. The feel of her bare skin … and the window slammed shut!
