Excerpt

By the time the wine bottle is empty, my fingers are like prunes. Lifting my drunk self out of the tub is a precarious exercise, but one I’ve perfected quite well. Turning the radio off, I move to the linen cupboard. Sober me forgot to leave a towel out. Drunk me is amused to find that sober me also forgot to bring the clean towels up from the laundry room downstairs.
Oh man, I really am drunk.
“fuck it” I think out loud before I make my way to my room. This is the only perk of being alone here for a few days. There’s no one to judge me if I decide to stay in pyjamas eating takeaway and drinking wine all weekend. There’s also no one to judge me or my not so youthful anymore body if I decide to stroll down stairs butt naked at three pm. It’s actually quite freeing. Since the girls, I’ve struggled with how I see myself, my body. Carrying two good sized babies to almost full term does terrible things to a women’s body. No amount of gym and Pilates is ever going to fix the mess that is my stomach and thighs, much to my chagrin. And even more to Petes, obviously.
“I bet Amber’s thighs don’t jiggle” I mutter to myself as I pad down the stairs. In fact, I know they don’t. I saw enough of them in Pete’s office to know that she’s toned in the places that mattered to my husband. Ex-husband?
What the fuck ever.
Deciding that my wayward thoughts need to shut the fuck up, I detour to the fridge for more wine, completely forgetting that I still haven’t grabbed a robe or a towel to cover my ass up. Yanking the door open, the frigid air biting at my skin causes me to let out a startled yelp.
“holy shit, that’s cold” I mutter as I leaned in to get the wine that I’d stored right at the back away from the girls.
“I think that’s the point of a refrigerator, Sweetheart”
The deep gravelly voice sounding from the direction of the front door makes me jump out of my own skin, causing me to whack my head on the internal shelf. The clang of my teeth crashing together causing me to drop the wine from my hand and let go of the door that had until that moment, been hiding my naked body.
Not even the shatter of glass on the floor is loud enough to distract me from the complete and utter mortification I feel at being caught in all my drunk, naked glory by the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen.
Duke Nash.

And all of this happens before she wakes up and faces reality where in fact she is a 50-something mom with grown kids. She’s been married longer than Theo’s been alive, and she now gets her kicks riding a Harley. As far as her body, she can thank Ben & Jerry’s for that, as well as gravity and vodka. Seven Stupid Things People Do to Mess Up Their Lives: (and how not to do them)
self-help, Christian Living, Personal Growth
Publisher: Straitjacket Press
Published: February 2017

You don’t have to be stupid to make stupid mistakes—some of the brightest minds in history have done horrible things and then had to live with the consequences. Wouldn’t it be great if you knew someone wise enough to guide you away from thoughtless acts and toward a better life?

Dr. Beau Adams, the pastor of Community Bible Church, has access to just such a man—and so do you. His name was Solomon, and he was the wisest man who ever lived.

Drawing from the book of Proverbs, Adams interprets Solomon’s insights for a modern audience. You’ll discover seven stupid ways people mess up their lives. Equally importantly, you’ll learn how to avoid those traps and make a better life for yourself.

Discover the pitfalls of following the wrong crowd, speaking without thinking, indulging laziness, and surrendering to anger. Solomon’s wisdom addresses debt, sexual immorality, and more—while also offering peaceful, practical advice.

You may no longer live in Solomon’s world—indeed, centuries have passed since he wrote the book of Proverbs. Human beings, however, have not changed, and a wise mentor can make all the difference in your life.

Let Dr. Adams connect you to that mentor.

Stones of Gratitude: A Foundation for a Richer Life
Self-Help, Christian Living, Personal Growth
Publisher: Crossover Communications
Published: December 2017

In medieval times, attempts to find a way to turn ordinary matter into gold were called alchemy. We now understand alchemy to be a forerunner of the modern study of chemistry, but what if people really do have the ability to turn what they touch to gold? Would having that kind of magical power be something that interests you?

What if I told you it involves gratitude? Would you be willing to wander down that path and see if that could possibly be true?

This little book is a series of stepping stones down that path. In Stones of Gratitude, Dr. Beau Adams explains how a single act of gratitude changed the course of history for an entire nation.

Matt had never been one to let a chance to provoke Jenna slip by. “I know what I’m getting you for Christmas,” he chided.
“Does it involve a trip to some tropical island and drinks with those tiny umbrellas in them?” Jenna quipped back.
“What makes you think I’d take you somewhere like that?” he retorted.
A sly smirk slinked up one corner of Jenna’s mouth. “What makes you think I was going to take you with me on my little island excursion? It’s my present.”
Matt shook his head. “A watch, Jenna. I’m getting you a watch. Not that you’d use it.”
He checked his mirrors and backed out of the driveway.
“Alright, children. Let’s play nice,” Halle interrupted before the back and forth really took off.
“That was nice,” Jenna mumbled.
“Yeah, about as nice as when you two ditched me at Levi’s Halloween party. Left me with a house full of masked marauders, and I don’t mean the interesting comic book kind.” Matt glared at Jenna in the rear-view mirror.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Halle bailed on you, too!”
“Hey now!” Halle piped in.
“She was hurt. She gets a pass. You could have found me, or called, or texted, or something.” His words came across with a little something Halle couldn’t help but be concerned about. For the past year, she had watched as Matt and Jenna bantered back and forth, always teetering on the edge of something more than friendship but never slipping over. Halle found herself glancing between the two, wondering if Jenna’s secret was why she had always kept Matt at arm’s length.
Jenna went silent for a moment. The countenance of her face saying more than words could. “I’m sorry, Matt. You’re right. I should have let you know. Forgive me?”
Matt’s eyes darted between the road and the rear view mirror several times before he blew out a heavy breath and his stare rested on the mirror for a long moment. “I forgave you the moment it happened. You know that,” he replied.
“Of course you did,” Jenna chimed. “You can’t stay mad at me. I won’t let you.” She stuck her tongue out at him.
Halle laughed at the exchange. “You two are something else.”

“Don’t know what you’re laughing at,” Matt remarked as he turned the Jeep into the school parking lot. “You’re friends with both of us. What does that say about you?”
“That I’m crazier than I thought,” Halle muttered. “But hey, at least y’all are entertaining.”
She adjusted her sunglasses and reached for her bag in the floorboard. “I’ll see you guys at lunch. I need to bolt. Have to try to get to Senior Mozingo’s class before homeroom to ask about some work I missed.”
“You sure you’re not just trying to avoid him?” Jenna asked as she nodded her head at the guy standing on the sidewalk straight ahead of the Jeep.
“Crap,” Halle mumbled.
“Want me to run him over?” Matt smiled. “I can say the gear slipped.”
Halle rolled her eyes, though her sunglasses hid the gesture. “No. I don’t want you to run him over. Geesh. But . . . you could run interference for me.”
“And you don’t think hitting him with a car would do that?” Matt grinned.
“Nevermind. I don’t want to deal with the police interrogation afterward. I’ll just do the best I can.” Halle made a face at Matt, slipped out of the Jeep, and eased toward the back of the car parked beside them.
