At the request of the Earl of Kensington, Donovan Tisdale attends a mind-expanding presentation by Richard Sandominus Flynn, the Minster of Steam-based Sciences. Flynn reveals the next step in steam-based power—flights to the moon and far beyond conducted by mechanical men. The attraction between Donovan and Flynn ignites from the moment they meet and follows them through the dangerous political climate of Her Majesty’s jeweled city as dark powers seek to dismantle the clean-based power poised to send humanity to the stars.

Hope, Tears, Steam, Gears Gregory L. Norris © 2019 All Rights Reserved I fell in love with him on that lost afternoon, a day that now seems part of another life and time. At the Earl of Kensington’s request, I headed to the planetarium to hear Richard Sandominus Flynn deliver a lecture to a full house of eager learners and free thinkers. Most of those assembled were students from university, steam workers, and members of Parliament. As the earl’s ward—a punishment for past petty crimes more than a chance at redemption, I was convinced—I sensed I didn’t belong and planned an early escape. Perhaps to the botanical gardens. I always loved it there. But soon the lights dimmed, and I settled against the faded red velvet seat, and my life forever changed. Overhead, stunning images washed over the smooth curves of the mother-of-pearl ceiling. The moon was first, its familiar cratered face easy to recognize. Only I had never seen the Earth’s nearest neighbor presented in such detail. Other celestial bodies followed. One, rust-red with what I assumed were polar ice caps, could only be the planet named for the god of war. A comet, in stunning clarity. The planet Jupiter. A constellation of stars. “What you are seeing,” said a man’s commanding voice that drew my eyes reluctantly down from the heavens and to the lectern on the small stage, “are photographic images of the universe that surrounds us.” Equally as breathtaking as the voluptuously full moon above him was the man. Tall, with dark hair and a trim beard, his face was the handsomest I’d ever beheld. His gentleman’s shirt, coat, and trousers, even his boots, fit him in a manner that suggested his clothes loved his body. I understood their ardor. Choking down a heavy swallow, I realized my mouth had gone completely dry. “Permit me to introduce myself,” the man continued, and how his voice matched the rest of his presentation in its majesty. “I am Richard Sandominus Flynn, Minister of Steam-based Research and Technology. The visual stills you are seeing are courtesy of Her Majesty’s Galactyscaphe, Britannia 2, a steam-powered platform presently in orbit around our fair world some one hundred and fifty miles above our heads.” Gasps sounded around the planetarium. I listened, stunned like my fellow audience members. What the handsome man said challenged the mind. Still, despite notions of spacecraft launched beyond the world of our origin, I couldn’t break focus with the man who’d sent Britannia 2 on her journey. He now stood beneath a representation of two suns and a fiery red sphere, which seemed to dance about the pair. His voice seduced me. An attraction so strong for him consumed my flesh. Deeper, in what I rarely thought of anymore as soul. “Our understanding of the world around us—and the worlds beyond—grows daily. It is my belief that within a reasonable expectation of five years’ time we can land similar craft on our nearest neighbors—the moon at first, of course. But then Mars in one direction, Venus in the other. Initially, with exploration teams of mechanical men—robot workers who will pave the way for manned expeditions.” More gasps followed. Flynn offered the barest of smiles, a measure of pride and one rightly earned. A strange emotion fluttered in my stomach. It could have been at the memory of the time I rode with the Earl of Kensington in Her Majesty’s jeweled airship, Trafalgar, from Heathrow Field to his family’s ancestral estate—the thought of traveling many times higher robbed me of breath and sent a shiver tumbling down my spine. Or it might have been Flynn himself, who seemed to have found me in the audience. His eyes, a vibrant green even given the distance that separated us, greeted mine. Suddenly, I felt as desirable as any of the planets or stars captured by Britannia 2’s cameras. Flynn’s hairy throat knotted as he swallowed, and my pulse quickened. For the next second or so, our eyes remained locked. In that bottled gaze, I dreamed the minister desired of me a fraction of what I craved of him. Then Flynn blinked and resumed discussing the future of programs like the Britannia project, threatened by politics and enemies of the Steam Workers’ Union. The lightness inside me evaporated, replaced by a miserable weight. He was Richard Sandominus Flynn, who’d sent spacecraft into orbit and would one day launch mechanical men followed by human beings to the stars. I was Donovan Tisdale, a reformed petty criminal from the streets of London who’d once stolen in order to eat.

STACEY-3 The weekend passed in a blur, days spent with mom, nights at the Saloon. I finally met Julie and Miguel the other employees. Julie was a sweet, cute blonde, who went to UNM during the week, making the bar a perfect place for her to work on weekends. Miguel was in his early twenties, good-looking, and fit. The moment he locked eyes on me, he flirted relentlessly with me. It didn’t take me long to realize his conversation was elementary at best, not going much deeper than working out, women, his diet, and how awesome he was. The costumers ate up his cheeky, flirty vibe. He was the perfect bartender, but my tolerance for his unsubtle quips about getting me in bed, had reached its limit by Sunday night. I barely saw Lincoln the whole weekend. When he did venture from his office to help stock or get a count of inventory, I was no more than a ghost to him, his frostiness towards me not lifting an inch. It frustrated me beyond belief, especially because I worked my ass off. I stocked, cleaned, and did side-work before I was asked, covered more tables than Julie, had customers laughing, bartenders in awe, and the kitchen staff blowing me kisses. I was the fucking model employee. Did he even utter one word of “good job” or “I’m sorry I was a total douchebag, forgive me, I’m so glad we hired you”? No, not once. Besides Nat, even Miguel had told Lincoln how good I was, when I was grabbing stuff out of my locker Sunday night. Though I wasn’t sure I felt flattered or not. “Hey, man.” I heard Miguel’s voice stream from Lincoln’s office near where I stood, grabbing my bag, dreaming about a shower and bed. Sunday had been almost as busy as Saturday and I was looking forward to the next two days off. “Here’s the till and report.” Only a grunt came in response. “Can I say, thank you for hiring that girl. Damn she’s good. Surprised me. Had all her tickets in order and on every drink the moment I finished making them.” Miguel scoffed, like he was truly shocked I was capable of being good. “And doesn’t hurt she’s fucking hot. Nice eye-candy for the bar.” A noise rolled out of the room, sounding like a feral growl, fleshing my skin with bumps. “Just sayin’. She’s smokin’. And you know my standards.” “And if you want to keep you job, you will repress from ever speaking like that about any woman at this bar again.” The sound of a chair screeching across the wood floor, Lincoln’s voice a rumble. “Especially her.” “Relax, Linc. It was a compliment.” “Miguel, you are an average bartender with an over inflated ego.” Lincoln’s voice vibrated with cold anger, curling over my skin. “And I warn you, if I see you make one more sexual comment to her, or even look at her…you’re fired. She may not be, but you are easy to replace. Now go home before I change my mind.” “Someone needs to get laid. Jesus, what is your problem tonight?” Miguel shot back. “And you wouldn’t fire me, you need me. I’m one of the best and you know it.” With a huff, Miguel stomped out of the office, passing me without a glance, and slamming through the back door. What the fuck just happened? Did Lincoln actually stand up for me? When did he notice Miguel’s attention on me? He didn’t act like I was even here. Boots hitting the wood floor, snapped me out of my trance, my head jerking to the doorway. Lincoln strode out, his brown eyes catching mine. Instantly his expression went taunt, his jaw twitching with irritation. “What are you still doing here?” “I was finishing side-work.” I forced my feet to stay planted on the floor. He was not going to scare me. He rubbed the spot between his eyes, his nose flaring. “Go home.” He twisted on his feet. “Yeah, I was. Thanks for your permission.” I snapped, my temper flared out of my mouth before I could think. He swung back around, his expression detached, but his jaw rolled with aggravation. His stare latched onto me like a trap, locking me in place. Thick tension sprouted between us, tangling my lungs in its web, and slinking around my body. He took a step closer, stopping a few feet from me, his form looming over mine. I couldn’t move or look away, my lungs skimmed the surface as his eyes moved over me. Slowly. Meticulous. Heat bloomed inside, flowing through my veins, and tightening my thighs. This man was a jerk. Had been nothing but rude to me, but I still couldn’t fight the desire to touch him. See if he was real. Understand why my heart thumped when he was close, why my body responded the way it did to him. STACEY-2 ReleaseDay-2 ReleaseDay Giveaway TUO

The Red Head

The Doctor

We’d share her, in a committed relationship. But, sharing wasn’t my style. Until, that was, I started to long for him just as much as I did her.

The Fireman

“Hell, Scar,” I began, “those tacos are almost as delicious as you.” That earned me a laugh by both Jordan and my redhead seductress.

“I know, I’m awesome like that.” She smirked. “You should see what else I can do with my hands.”

“Is that supposed to be a challenge?” Jordan asked.

“I meant in the kitchen, boys. Get your head out of the gutter.” Scar stood, grabbing the plates to clear the items from the table.

As she attempted to snatch my food from in front of me, I spun her around and pulled her onto my lap. “Nope, you aren’t clearing the dishes, Scar. You cooked. Anyway, I think there’s something more important we might need to take care of. You with me, Doc?”

He looked around at the dishes on the table. I should have known the type A personality of our doctor wouldn’t let him concentrate with a mess. “Doc, work with me here.”

He stood, moving to where Scar was sitting on my lap, her skirt offering easy access. “Um, yeah, I can let a dirty kitchen slide this time because I have many dirty thoughts of you on my mind, Red.”

I loved his analogy. It was something a control freak would say to make him feel better about leaving a mess. And it was cute. Fuck, I wanted to dirty him as much as he wanted to dirty Scar. “Good one, Doc. Let’s get our girl upstairs.”

“Nope, I have plans for her right here.”
