What Death Taught Terrence

What Death Taught Terrence
by Derek McFadden
Genre: Inspirational Fantasy
LIFE IS A JOURNEY. SO IS THE AFTERLIFE.
At the end of his life, Terrence McDonald must discover its meaning,
or he’ll be banned from the afterlife forever, and his soul will cease to
exist.
Join Terrence–
and those who love him–on a poignant and
unforgettable journey through a life at once wonderful and harrowing.
Learn what Terrence learns. See what Terrence sees. By this provocative
story’s end, readers may even learn a thing or two about themselves.
***
The TV is on, and I’m on the couch, leaning as far back as I can. My heavy, indecisive brown eyes—their lenses blurred ever since my tumultuous, too-soon entrance into the world—flutter between open and shut. I am half-watching half-listening to a football game on a Sunday afternoon. Was that the doorbell?
“Who is it?” I call out, expecting to hear my daughter, Megan’s, voice. These days, she is the one person who visits me. The only person who knows I’m making my home in this little oasis fashioned from wood felled by my own hand.
“Terry, it’s Mom. I’m here to help you move.”
My mom? That’s not possible. She’s…
Wait. To help me move? Oh, God.
I rise from the couch and glance back at my lifeless body.
PRAISE FOR What Death Taught Terrence
“What Death Taught Terrence offers a powerful, painful, and poignant look at the life of a man rarely encountered in fiction. Derek McFadden’s writes with an insight few can match.”
— T.F. ALLEN, author of The Night Janitor and The Keeper
“A good story allows the reader to experience life as another person, and McFadden made me do so on a deeply personal level. If you like the works of Mitch Albom, I think you’ll find What Death Taught Terrence a worthy addition to your library and the reading of it a lifeaffirming journey.”
— BRADLEY HARPER, Edgar-Award Finalist, author of A Knife In The Fog and Queen’s Gambit
“In What Death Taught Terrence, Derek McFadden builds a world that satisfies both our desire for imagination and our need for personal introspection. I found this (story) immediately immersive, and it stuck
with me long after I finished. McFadden is doing something rare in today’s fiction—exploring the limits of what we will believe to form a better understanding of who we are.”
— ALEX DOLAN, author of The Euthanist and The Empress of Tempera
Derek McFadden is the author of the novel What Death Taught Terrence, available in February of 2020 wherever fine books are shelved. Other works of note include the well-regarded Prose From A Grandson To A Senior Fellow.
Born with a mild case of cerebral palsy, his is “a voice for those whose voices have yet to be heard,” according to the online publication Audacity Magazine.

Guinevere: The Legend

I’m a retired high school English teacher. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I hope to inspire young readers and those Young-at-Heart to read more through my Tales and Legends for Reluctant Readers set in these worlds—Ancient Egypt, Medieval Wales, and coming soon, a hair-raising adventure through ancient worlds in search of 5 rare Phoenix Feathers.

All of my books come with Free study guides and/or extensive Back-of-the-Book materials.

My husband and I love to travel. In 2008, we spent three weeks in Egypt traveling by local train from one end of the country to the other; in 2014, we spent three weeks in the UK driving over 1700 miles through England, Wales, and Scotland; and in 2016, we spent a week in Iceland. We’ve also traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, and Aruba. Our next big adventure will be to Greece and Italy.

When I’m not writing or traveling, our 4 grandkids keep us busy.

Calle Stevens wasn’t what one would call a risk-taker.

She was steady. She was even. She was . . .

Pregnant.

Oh God. How was she pregnant? Well, she knew the how part, but that wasn’t the point. Mistakes happened, condoms failed, birth control pills didn’t work, and . . . she was pregnant by a man who’d broken up with her via text and then readily offered to sign away his parental rights when she’d told him she was keeping the baby.

Her life was ruined.

She’d just been hired as an assistant coach for the professional hockey team, the San Francisco Gold. She didn’t have any family in the area, didn’t have a partner. How was she going to have a baby?

But then Cooper.

A star player for the team, he’d found out about the baby and had insisted on coming with her to her first appointment, then had held her hair back when she’d spent the majority of her time christening the porcelain goddess before coming to the second, and then the third, and the fourth and—

In fact, as much as she tried to push him away, he refused to keep his distance. And then when she was having a particularly weak moment, feeling fat and gross and completely unappealing, he held her like she was precious and . . . he kissed her.

Then didn’t stop.

Calle didn’t know what was scarier, the kiss or that she didn’t want him to stop either.

One moment, my only priorities are my bike, my club, and my freedom.
The next, my ex dumps a little girl off on my doorstep with a note saying she’s mine.
Then, everything goes to hell in the MC, when an unknown element blows up a rival club and starts coming for us.
That’s when fate plants a fiery, brown-eyed beauty smack in the middle of the whole mess.
She’s got a body that just won’t quit
And a mouth that makes me want to argue with her almost as much as I want to kiss her.
She sees right through me.
And it’s pretty damn clear she doesn’t like what she sees.
But I can tell by the heat in her eyes
And what it does to me to watch her hips shimmy as she storms away from me…
Ain’t no way one night will be enough to quench a flame this hot.
I’m a small-town girl from the Midwest who moved to the big city as a young adult in search of adventure. Since that fateful day when I took a deep breath and took a chance, I’ve traveled and lived all over the world, though I gravitate toward hot climates. Someday, I hope to retire to a sandy beach and continue my writing with sand between my toes.
These days, I live in the Great Lakes region with my hot-as-hell husband and our two adorable cats. When I’m not writing, I’m reading. My tastes in books definitely run the gamut. I am a sucker for a bad boy romance, though. Aren’t we all?
Thank you so much for reading my work, and for supporting independent authors!
I love to hear from readers, and always appreciate your feedback.

Asbury High and the Parcels of Poison

Asbury High and the Parcels of Poison
Asbury High Book 2
by Kelly Brady Channick
Genre: YA Mystery
Asbury’s fearless foursome are back! Is their favorite restaurant to blame for customers falling ill? Or is there something more sinister at work?
After an unprecedented first year of high school, the gang is ready for a relaxing summer vacation, although in Asbury that may be easier said than done. This summer, the Food Network is running a summer special highlighting local hot spots; Carly, Maddie, Pilot and Cornelious are psyched to have the world’s best restaurant featured – their very own Brady’s! In fact, Maddie can almost forget that her arch-nemesis, Alexis Johnson, will also be on TV for winning the logo design for Caulfield’s Candies… almost.
However, after patrons start falling ill, rumors of food poisoning cause many to point their finger at Brady’s. When Brady’s threatens to close it’s doors, Pilot realizes his mother’s job is in jeapordy, as well as his future in Asbury. With the aid of Cornelious’ wealthy cousin Dane, who spends every summer with the quartet, the gang is once again thrust into an investigation. Unfortunately, they find themselves thwarted by both the local police (who believe their recent success was due to luck rather than skill), and Cornelious’ father, who has decided to run for Mayor of Asbury and cautions his son on the need to maintain a spotless public image.
With a new pancake house on the boardwalk, Mainlanders invading their beaches, and the Pitbulls sneaking around and terrorizing shoobies (as usual), there’s no shortage of suspects. But can they solve the case before the summer, and Brady’s, are finished?
**Only .99 cents!**
Asbury High and the Thief’s Gamble
Asbury High Book 1
Asbury, although a haven to shoobies (tourists) in the summer, is a divided coastal town. With the rich half living in the East, and the rest living in the West, most friendships stay within their boundaries. Luckily for a spunky-smart tomboy, a clever billionaire athlete, a gossipy-in-the-know cheerleader, and a wrong side of the tracks technological genius, boundaries are a foreign concept. In fact, Maddie, Cornelious, Carly and Pilot have been Asbury’s strongest quartet for years, despite their vast differences. Nevertheless, after a few weeks of starting high school, the foursome’s friendship is tested.
After a string of burglaries in East Asbury, the gang decides to solve the crime as a reason to make time for each other. The further they investigate, the more they find themselves constantly side-stepping tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum-like policemen, outsmarting local bully JB and his gang of misfits, and dealing with Cornelious’ billionaire father and Governor—who has disapproved of his son’s choice of friends for years. In addition to these obstacles, the foursome must also adapt to their evolving friendship with each other and their peers.
With upperclassmen, teachers, and teammates vying for their attention, the gang must work even harder to root out the red-herrings from the true thief. Aided by Carly’s gossip, Maddie’s boldness, Cornelious’ quick-wit, and Pilot’s knack for technology, the gang soon discovers its edge over the local police department.
**Only .99 cents!**
For as long as she could remember, Kelly Brady Channick loved making up stories, and leaving her listeners/readers on the edge of their seats.
Perhaps that’s why she always managed to talk herself out of trouble…
After graduating from NJ’s own Ocean City High School, Kelly accepted a basketball scholarship to Holy Family University, in Philadelphia. As a lifelong athlete, Kelly understands the importance of teamwork and overcoming adversity, something she hopes translates into her books.
Before writing page-turners, she taught first, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade — like a dessert menu, she simply had to test them all out. But her favorite job is the one she’s now doing full time: writing. Kelly loves to craft whodunit mysteries, leading readers through various twists and turns filled with red-herrings, hidden clues, and more peculiar characters than a reality show.
Kelly lives in South Jersey with her handsome husband, energetic baby boy, two cookie-stealing dogs, and an awfully smart cat.

Dream Duet by Elle Keating

Title: I Dream of Spiders & I Fade Away
Duet: Dream Duet
Author: Elle Keating
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Available NOW 99 Pennies
The move to the remote town of Quarry Hill, Pennsylvania was supposed to help Griffin McGuire start over and forget the two people who betrayed him. As a paramedic at the local hospital, he would still have to interact with people, but the rest of the time he could hole himself away in the secluded cabin he was renting. It was perfect. For the first time in over a year, he felt like he could finally breathe.
That was until he met her.
A woman who doesn’t know her own name or why she was covered in blood and standing in the middle of the road when he found her. Griffin knows he should contact the police, but something is preventing him from going to the authorities. It doesn’t take long for him to realize that he was correct in trusting his instincts. Every time she falls asleep, she dreams and another memory is unlocked. Memories that are horrific and make him want to protect and hide her from the world.
After four months, Tia Peterson has been found. The woman who was kidnapped and trafficked has escaped hell only to realize that her nightmare isn’t over. Her story has hit the media and every reporter and news outlet wants to know the gory details; things she doesn’t want to speak of ever again.
But then she meets Trent Reddick.
The former Navy SEAL doesn’t ask too many questions, never pressures her to talk about what happened while she was held captive in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. He just wants to help her get her life back.
But the more time they spend together, the stronger Trent’s feelings for Tia become…and that scares him. If he doesn’t find a way to rein in his emotions, be the friend she needs instead of the man he wants to be for her, he may lose her for good.
I DREAM OF SPIDERS
Clare

I can’t keep doing this to him. He has a life and most likely a girlfriend. Tomorrow I will leave. I will ask to borrow some money and get far away from him. He has done enough. I will make it on my own. I get out of bed and creep down the hall to tell him my plan. I expect to find him in the kitchen, maybe needing a late-night snack, not the bathroom. Because why wouldn’t he have just used the master bath? The sound of heavy breathing snaps up my attention and I look toward the hall bathroom. The light isn’t on but I hear a barely audible groan on the other side of the cracked door. I push it open and watch the man I have fantasized about for the past few days working his cock with one hand while he steadies himself by holding onto the sink. I can’t stop staring. He is so big, so aroused…and so am I. I want him. I want to be the one making him groan and pant. Without warning, he turns and our eyes lock.

“Leave, Clare.” I can’t move. “Go back to bed,” he commands, his tone desperate. His hand stills and he releases his cock. “Please,” he utters, his voice gruff, as if he is in pain.

My feet unlock from the imaginary vise they have been in and I step toward him. We don’t break eye contact, even when I grip his cock and stroke him from root to tip. I’m not sure if I have ever done this before or if I am even doing it correctly, but the way his breathing hitches and his eyes flutter tell me that I am doing something right. I pump him harder, swirling the wet tip with the pad of my thumb. His hips sway and his pants become more erratic. I am seconds away from dropping to my knees when he suddenly grabs my wrist.

“We can’t,” he says, his eyes boring into mine.

“Why? Is it because of Corinne?” I ask. He blinks several times and shakes his head. “Your girlfriend?”

“I don’t have a girlfriend.”

“But I thought…”

“Corinne’s my sister.”

He doesn’t have a girlfriend. Which means…

He pries my fingers from his cock and tucks himself back into his pants. He moves past me and steps out of the bathroom. Like a fool, I follow him. “Oh. I get it now. You just don’t want me,” I say.

He stops and faces me. “Is that what you think? That I don’t want you?”

“You stopped me…you said we can’t…”

“We can’t because you belong to someone else. You remembered him today, caught a glimpse of the man you admitted loving, and I’ll be damned if he is who you are thinking of as I sink into you. I won’t share you. I’m not built that way.”

I feel like complete shit. Griffin is doing the noble thing, protecting my virtue and his heart. I am such a bitch.

Dylan is important to me. I care for him. Love him. But in what way? If it is a romantic type of love, then why didn’t I feel guilty when I touched Griffin? Or when I think about him taking me, claiming me? Griffin turns and walks to the living room. I pathetically escape to the bedroom. I am no longer afraid of the nightmares that could plague me if I even manage to fall asleep tonight. No, what I fear are the dreams I may have of the man who has just protected me from myself.
I FADE AWAY
Trent
Tia and I have settled into a routine. With the exception of Sundays and the occasional Saturday we both go to work, come home after our shifts, eat dinner together and veg out in front of the television. Sometimes I cook, or attempt to, while she does a great job pretending she likes what I make. Tia, on the other hand, is a fucking genius in the kitchen. And the desserts she makes? They are my undoing and why I’m currently on the treadmill running twice as many miles as I did before she moved in.
I can absolutely see Tia owning her own bakery. She has the brains to run a business and the skill to produce one mouthwatering sugary concoction after another. I think she will be ready one day to take on that venture, but not yet.
I don’t want to think that she’s going through the motions, working, eating, sleeping, repeat, but I can’t bury my head in the sand, either. She has yet to go see a therapist and she is still plagued by nightmares, the kind that drive her into my bedroom on a nightly basis. Every night is the same. She quietly enters my room. I hold the covers up and she slips in beside me. We don’t talk; we just let the silence sooth her. I both hate and love those moments. I hate them because I know that her nightmares are what brings her to me. I love them because for those few hours she allows me to hold her, lets me in…trusts me. And that means everything.
Sure, there have been times when she’s been lying there and accidentally brushed up against my cock. My mind drifts to less chivalrous things in those moments, but I am able to squash those thoughts by remembering how much it must take for her to come to me night after night.
I decrease the speed and my pace goes from a sprint, to a jog and then a brisk walk. A few minutes later, I power down and step off the treadmill and wipe my face with a towel. I plant myself on my bench and start to adjust my free weights when I hear footsteps on the basement stairs.
“Oh sorry, I didn’t know you were still here. I thought you left for work.”
Tia has reached the bottom step and I’m tempted to command her to turn right around and go back where she came from. Because I’m about to lose my shit. Tia is wearing workout shorts and a black tank top that hides nothing. I notice her cheeks pinken and I feel my own face heat up.
“I wanted to get a run in before work. Got to get back in the saddle again. All we do is eat.”
I laugh because she’s right. We do eat a lot and I love that she doesn’t shy away from food that most definitely can expand your waistline, though from where I’m standing, she has nothing to worry about.
Stop looking at her.
“The treadmill is all yours. I was just going to lift a little. Are you okay if I stay?’
“Of course. It’s your house. Have at it,” she says.
I’m a couple of reps in when I realize just how much trouble I’m in. I should have left when I had the chance because I can’t stop my eyes from wandering over to Tia, her ass to be exact. She is jogging and sweating and looking amazing. I’m so distracted that I almost drop a free weight on my foot. I turn and face the wall, do some curls and try to come up with an excuse as to why I need to cut my workout short. I can hear her feet pounding on the treadmill, her steady breaths. After a few minutes, I decide to do some pullups on a bar I had bolted into the ceiling. I’m on my fifth pullup, still not facing her, when I hear her even breaths turn into light pants. Christ, now I know what she would sound like when she is…
“I’m so out of shape,” she says.
I do something stupid, release the pullup bar and turn around. Beads of sweat have gathered on her forehead. My gaze drifts lower, and I spot a lone droplet work its way down her neck and disappear between her cleavage. I bite back a groan, grab my towel and wipe my face. I need a shower, a cold one.

Into Their Woods by Beckett Riley

Title: Into Their Woods: A Shifter Romance
Author: Beckett Riley
Genre: Erotic Romance (Paranormal/Shifter Short Story)
Release Date: June 1, 2020
Living in a rickety old cabin in the woods she bought to renovate, beautiful ex-ballerina Kat knew this was the life she was meant for. If only she had a map when she got lost during a leisurely walk. The wolf stalking her isn’t helping matters either.
Brothers Brodie, Lucas, and Finn are scorching hot, territorial bear shifters living in seclusion with one thing on their minds; finding a mate.
When Kat lands on their doorstep after narrowly becoming wolf dinner, the term “being eaten alive” takes on a whole new meaning as she’s been mated to all three gorgeous men who want nothing but to fulfill her every need. Can these shifters contain the raging beasts within? More importantly, does Kat want them to?

I stared at the pointe shoes on my feet. Incredible how one tangible item can contribute to some of the best memories in your life and also be the root of your greatest failure. I wrapped the delicate ribbons around my ankles and felt some familiar cramps. Ugh, I was getting my period. Great timing. I looked up and saw my reflection in the cracked mirror. Fucking morons. The delivery guys manhandled the mirror when they mounted it to the wooden wall inside the cabin. It had taken forever to have it delivered here. I was so far up the mountain a return or exchange wasn’t really an option. I ended up gluing some pieces directly onto the wall. How sad. It was—is—a shit hole, but now it’s my shit hole. A work in progress as many new homeowners in over their heads would say. No matter, I was doing my very best to make it mine, but this turned out to be harder than I ever imagined. Fuck those home renovating whores on HGTV. But I didn’t have much of a choice. I sold everything and came here to live permanently, maybe teach dance at the nearest school. I don’t know; I haven’t thought that far ahead. I just want a fresh start. Look, I always knew I would never make principal dancer. I was never the right body type. By right body type I mean waif-thin and flat-chested. I have big tits, and I like food. That didn’t stop me from strapping down the girls and skipping a meal or two. I loved to dance until I didn’t. That time didn’t come until grandma died. She raised me and spent her life sacrificing everything for me, always reminding me to love life. It dawned on me after her passing that I wasn’t. I stood in front of the barre and started my carefree warm-up. I was in plié when I noticed my cold breath was visible; I knew I needed to stop and get wood from outside for the fireplace before the sun set. As I stepped onto the porch, I had an urge to explore. Why not? I put on my hiking boots and went off. About thirty minutes into my adventure, I came across a beautiful stream. The water flowing over the stones was a heavenly sound. I kept walking along the edge, mesmerized. It wasn’t until I heard a growl in the distance that I realized how far from my cabin I was. The sun was setting too. Shit. The growling got closer, and I frantically looked around for a branch or something I could use as a weapon when I noticed smoke rising not that far away. A chimney. Not wanting to run, I hustled toward the cabin.
Beckett loves writing short, erotic stories as much as she loves reading them. Happily ever afters and hot, possessive guys bring tears of joy to her eyes so expect to see alpha males roaming the pages of her raunchy page. Born somewhere in the United States, Beckett now resides somewhere in the United States where she writes erotic stories. Hey, a girl’s gotta have some secrets.
