Hollywood taught me everything I know about relationships–except how to be in one. As an actor, I became an expert at faking it. Faking that I wasn’t affected by my childhood. Faking that I was okay. Faking that I knew how to save the day, the girl, the whole damn world.

Until I’m forced to move back to Sugarloaf for six months, and Brenna Allen offers me a chance to prove otherwise. She’s everything I never knew I wanted, but can’t have. Her broken heart, perfect face, and adorable children turn my world upside down. Instead of preparing for my next leading role, I’m directing a middle school play.

All to make her smile.

The more time I spend here, the more I want to stay. Build a life in this town that I swore I’d leave–for her.

The Fairy Garden

Contemporary Fiction/Literature

Date Published:

September 15, 2020

Publisher:

Blue Fortune Enterprises, Lavender Press

A whimsical story about facing our deepest fears and greatest loves, and what we all must do to grow into the life we were meant to experience.

Elizabeth’s secret began when she was five years old, a secret she held close her entire life. As far as she knew, she was the only person who could see the fairies living in her grandfather’s garden. They play with her and show her their world, and as she grows older, they guide her through the important moments of her life. The fairies, and especially Olivia, were her closest friends.

But where were they when everything fell apart? Why didn’t they save her grandfather when he needed help, and why didn’t they warn her about the things she had to endure? Surely the fairies, who seemed to have a prescience about the future, knew what Elizabeth would have to tolerate.

After the death of her grandfather, Elizabeth moves into his house to begin the process of healing. But when her daughter begins to see and play with the fairies, Elizabeth has a choice to make. Will she accept her daughter’s new friends or will she find a way to banish them from her life forever?

Excerpt

Rules? The fairies have their rules and there are rules for humans too. Elizabeth sat on the terrace remembering all that had gone wrong. There are laws and Lucas should have known better. He’s a lawyer after all, now on the staff of a representative in the Statehouse in Richmond. But he has so little respect for the laws, the rules. And our vows. It doesn’t matter anymore. It’s too late to complain about it now. He’s left me.

Elizabeth stopped her anxious, angry thoughts and watched as Livvy walked slowly back from the garden. Her daughter’s face was red, her body sticky with sweat. Pale blonde hair clung to her face in wet tendrils. She grinned. “Mommy, my new fairy friend Olivia says to tell you hello. She misses you. She says it’s okay and she understands. What does she understand?”

She thinks I don’t believe in fairies anymore. That’s what she understands.”

Do you believe in fairies?”

No, Honey Bunny, not anymore. I did when I was a little girl like you. But I’m a grownup now.”

But you do believe in fairies, don’t you, Mommy? You say you don’t, but you do. You have to.” Livvy was insistent. “You can’t say you don’t believe in fairies if you know about Olivia. You do believe in Olivia. Right, Mommy?”

The child’s logic was undeniable. In spite of herself, Elizabeth smiled. “Of course I believe in fairies. I knew Olivia and the Queen and Thomas when I was little. They were my friends.”

The child begged, “Do you want to come down in the garden and play with me and Olivia, my fairy?”

Elizabeth felt tempted. The fairies might offer her comfort now, the way they always did when she was a child. She was hurting today after Papa’s funeral, and she needed someone to comfort her, to give her a hug, even just to sit and talk with her about how she felt. Whenever there were boyfriend troubles, in the beginning with Lucas or earlier with her other boyfriends, Olivia and the fairies were there for her, always her refuge. But Elizabeth shook her head. “No. I need to get supper ready. Do you want to help me?”

Okay Mommy.” Livvy paused and looked back at the garden. She trudged reluctantly through the door from the terrace and into the kitchen with her mother.

It was late summer. The air cooled quickly after sunset and it was too chilly to eat outside in the evening. Elizabeth and Livvy prepared salads with sliced chicken. They ate together inside at the dining room table, looking through the paned picture window to the garden. The house was quiet. They were alone. They didn’t talk, each lost in her thoughts about the funeral that morning. But while they ate, they both stole looks at the garden outside, watching for fairies.

Then it was bedtime. They had decided Livvy would sleep in the room that had always been Elizabeth’s when she was a child. Elizabeth had concluded she could no longer sleep in that room or any of the rooms above the garden with its fairies. Fairies were her friends when she was a child, but that time was in the past.

She couldn’t bring herself to sleep in Papa’s room, either. She couldn’t imagine sleeping in his bed, a bed he had left for the hospital only a few days ago. She planned to sleep in the room across the hall her parents always used when they visited. It was in the front of the house, away from the garden, looking down on the front lawn and into the street.

In her old room, Elizabeth tucked Livvy into the big bed and sat on the edge beside her.

Mommy, I like having fairies for friends. It’s cool. They tell me they’ll always watch over me and make me safe.”

Yes, they’ll always be with you when you’re in the garden. Sometimes when you’re not here at Papa’s house, when you’re other places, if there are gardens, other fairies will be watching you in those places, too. But you can’t count on them to protect you all the time. Sometimes you’ll still need people to take care of you, and sometimes you’ll need to take care of yourself.”

You take care of me too, Mommy.”

Yes, I do, and I always will, Honey Bunny.” Elizabeth hugged her little girl, brushing a white wisp of hair off her forehead.

Did Olivia and the fairies take care of you when you were little?”

Yes.”

Did Daddy know about the fairies? Did the fairies take care of Daddy too?”

I told Daddy about the fairies, but I don’t think he could see them. I don’t think he really believed in them.”

Did they take care of Daddy?” Livvy persisted with a question that seemed so obvious to her, if not to her mother.

If the fairies took care of Lucas, why would he have abandoned her and Livvy? It was a path Elizabeth didn’t want to follow with her child.

No, I don’t think so,” Elizabeth answered. “They left him alone and let him do whatever he wanted. Now go to sleep, Olivia. Sleep tight.” Elizabeth gave her a last hug and a kiss. She tucked Hamilton, Livvy’s stuffed bear, in with her and stood. As she was about to turn out the light at the door, she stopped for a moment and looked back. Livvy seemed so small in the big four-poster bed. She was smiling, the bedspread tucked up to her chin, snug in her little fists. Her body was a tiny hump under the covers. Hamilton peeked out beside her.

Good night Mommy. I love you.”

Good night. Sleep tight. I love you too.” Elizabeth closed the door and started down the stairs. Behind the door, she heard Livvy stirring. She’s sneaking out of bed, Elizabeth thought, going over to the window to look out at the garden to see if there are fairies. I hope they don’t come and fly her out to the garden tonight. And I know I can’t even keep her safe by locking the window. If they want her, they’ll fly right through the walls and take her. She needs to sleep. It’s been a hard day for her.

Little Hood and Her Wolf

(The Big Bad Wolf Trilogy, #2)
Publication date: December 8th 2020
Genres: Coming of Age, Fairy Tales, Young Adult

Kylie knew Logan Grimm came with a price. She just had no idea that the price was being told what to do by the most dangerous residents of Blackwoods.

She should run and survive, but Logan’s sweet words and even sweeter kisses keep her where she is.

Right where the Big Bad Wolf lies in wait.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Kylie blinked a few times and stared ahead. Janie was sitting across from her and Logan, and Ryder was pouring Dr Pepper into her glass. He opened a few prescription bottles, and Janie held her hand out without saying anything, waiting for him to pour a pill from each bottle. When she swallowed the last pill, she gagged a little before receiving a kiss to her forehead.

God, she really is crazy.

Logan squeezed Kylie’s leg under the table because she was staring with her mouth open.

“Have you never seen someone take medication before?” Ryder asked, his harsh tone biting at her skin.

“Babe,” said Janie the same time Logan called out, “Ryder.”

Kylie swallowed and looked at Janie, who only smiled at her. It wasn’t the smile she’d given her yesterday though. It was forced.

“She needs to stop staring at you like you’re a fucking science experiment,” Ryder said, his voice louder as Janie cooed to him.

“She’s just curious,” Janie said, but even then, she didn’t sound the same. She sounded like a small child. Ryder didn’t seem to like that.

“Curious my ass.” He glared at Kylie.

“Enough.” Logan kept his eyes trained on Ryder.

“I’m sorry,” Kylie whispered, her heart racing under Ryder’s stare. He might not be the killer, but he was willing to be.

Janie put her hand over Ryder’s as she replied, “I take medicine to help with my PTSD and other stuff. Ryder helps me remember to take them because I don’t like to. Swallowing pills bothers me now.” Janie finally smiled, but it was all for Ryder.

“It’s none of her business.” Ryder’s voice was so loud it hurt to listen to him speak.

Gawain spoke up, putting authority into his order. “Boys, you both need to relax, or we’re sending Kylie home and taking Janie away till this mess blows over.”

“It’s fine,” said Janie when Ryder let out an angry noise at the threat being issued. Janie kissed Ryder’s cheek and whispered in his ear until he turned to peck her lips. He started eating. “He just doesn’t like people staring,” Janie said when Kylie still couldn’t look away, “or judging me.”

“I wasn’t judging,” Kylie said quickly, her voice a hushed whisper while she covered Logan’s shaking hand.

“Yeah.” Janie smiled, but it was clear she didn’t believe her. “Everything’s fine, right, babe?”

Ryder grunted and stuffed more food in his mouth.

Janie returned her focus to Kylie, her eyes flashing with fire. “Sleep well?”

Kylie tensed. “I slept fine, thanks.”

Those vibrant hazel eyes stayed on her for a moment longer before shifting to Logan. He was still glaring at Ryder, which might’ve been why Janie’s tone darkened. “Logan, put yourself in his shoes. You wouldn’t like someone staring at Kylie over any of her personal issues either. You know why it bothers him, and you know why he’s really mad.”

Logan fumed as he glared between the couple but said nothing.

Janie’s eyes narrowed. “And don’t forget you’ve reacted worse when something was said to her. This is the same.”

“It’s not the same,” Logan said between clenched teeth. “She didn’t say shit about you!”

Ryder slammed his hand down on the table and stood, glaring at Logan. “No, you just opened your fucking mouth and spilled every one of her secrets.”

Logan stood up, his eyes dangerous. Kylie grabbed his hand as Janie wrapped her arms around Ryder to keep him from lunging over the table.

“I had no choice,” Logan yelled back.

“Bullshit.” Ryder carefully peeled Janie off him and nudged her over to Gawain before stepping around the table. “We made one rule, Grimm. And that was to keep our mouths shut. I warned you not to say anything. Everyone warned you.”

“Stop.” Janie tried to break free from Gawain, but she was held tightly against her brother as Logan and Ryder stood toe to toe. “Babe, please let me handle this.”

Ryder ignored her and smirked at Logan. “You’ve been good on your word this whole time—but Blondie sucks your dick, and suddenly you’re confessing like a church girl who touched herself for the first time.”

Logan swung before the gasp finished leaving her lips. He hit Ryder right in the jaw, and it was total chaos from there.
