Excerpt:

A door on the first floor slams, and I blink awake. Glancing over at my clock on my bedside table, I find it is six-thirty a.m., half an hour before my alarm was set to go off.  Groaning, I throw an arm over my face and try to grasp the warm fog of sleep that still clings to the corners of my mind.  As I drift off again, my door slams open, and a familiar voice calls out.

            “Colt!  You lazy giant!  Get up. Santa Claus is here.”

            Before I can respond, the covers are ripped off my bed, and the brat grabs my free hand, trying to pull me up.  I resist, mostly by just not moving.  Since I outweigh him by a good fifty pounds, I know he won’t be able to budge me from my bed without a lot more effort than he is currently exerting.  Without moving my arm off my face, I laugh at him.

            My arm is snatched away from my face as Eddie tries again to yank me upright.  A smirk forms on my lips as I purposely lie as still as possible. 

            “Damn it, Colt.  You’re a brick house, not a horse!  Get up!”  He throws my arm down into my face as I laugh.

            “Hurry up.  We have to get breakfast going before all of the kids wake up. You know Elouise’s rule.  If we don’t hurry up, we will be late for brunch at Tuck and Darren’s place.”

            Sighing, I scrub my hand over my face, feeling the stubble on my chin.  “Why did you have to wake me up?  Can’t someone else help you?”

            Eddie plops down on the end of my bed and throws me one of his dazzling smiles.  His outfit finally registers.  The crazy racehorse is decked out in a full Santa costume, complete with a ridiculous fake beard that he has pulled down below his chin.  A laugh escapes me before I can help it. 

            “What are you wearing?”

“Why are we as we are, Benjamin? Do you ever wonder?” Nikolas lay with his head on Ben’s belly, his hair being stroked. He twisted around to look at Ben when he got no response. Ben was frowning. “What do you mean? Gay?” “I’m not…no, what I mean is, why do we not need what that doctor offers? Why do we…work?” Ben lifted his head and stared at him. The pause went on for an unnatural length of time until Nikolas shifted uncomfortably. “What?” Ben shook himself. “You? Introspection? I never thought I’d live to see the day.” “You’re very harsh, Benjamin. I think about a lot of things very deeply as you know.” Ben began to laugh. “Oh, yeah, you spend hours and hours thinking about me and our relationship.” Nikolas folded his arms, his air of injured martyrdom slightly ruined by the huge erection jutting up from his lean body. Ben pushed it flat to the ridged belly and lay on top of Nikolas, propped up on his elbows, studying him. “Maybe it’s because we don’t do the thinking thing we work so well.” Nikolas wasn’t particularly mollified by this suggestion. “We’re only together because we don’t think about it too much? I’m gratified and flattered by your devotion.” Ben sighed. “When was the last time you thought about breathing?” “What?” “Breathing? Lungs in and out? Air? When did you last think about it? You’re like breathing. I don’t think about it, but I need it to stay alive.” A faint smile came to Nikolas’s lips. “Then you’re like a heartbeat. I’ll miss you when you stop.” Ben laughed then sobered slightly, trailing a finger around one of Nikolas’s nipples. “You did think I’d stopped. When I was in that coffin. Did you miss me then? You’ve never really told me.” Nikolas raised his head a little to look at him then lowered it again, staring at the ceiling. “I haven’t told you, because I have no words for it.” He snagged his fingers into Ben’s hair and tugged him down for a kiss. Around the kissing, he murmured, “You know I’ve begun to dream, yes? That I don’t sleep well now.” Ben nodded, clearly only intent on the taste and feel of his lips and tongue. “Well, I dream of you every night. Over forty years of no dreams, and they turned on like a switch in my head after I watched you burn in the fire. Perhaps that says more than words.” Ben lifted up and cupped his face. “Didn’t watch me burn. I’m right here, Nik.” Nikolas nodded and wrapped his arms around Ben, kissing his shoulder, pressing his face into the crook of Ben’s warm neck. He never talked about the time he thought he’d lost Ben, because this is what always happened when he tried. He swallowed and raised his eyes, biting his lip for control. With the intuitive knowledge of him, which Ben apparently had, he didn’t try to comfort him or get him to talk more, he just slid back and took him in. Nikolas gasped. Ben sat up, dug his fingers painfully into his hard stomach and began to ride him. Nikolas arched, nightmares of losing Ben forgotten in the extreme pleasure of having him here in the bed with him. He twisted, rolled them, re-entered, lifting Ben’s thigh and gaining better access. He felt a trickle of moisture on his cheek, a residue of the grief he couldn’t articulate and pressed his face to Ben’s chest, hearing the heartbeat as he jerked, bringing his thrusts in time with that steady, strong and reassuring sound. Ben held Nikolas’s hair, running his fingers through it, tugging it for encouragement when he needed more, and then they were coming together. Nikolas lifted up slightly off Ben’s belly, allowing Ben’s cock to jettison freely over their chests while he groaned as he unloaded deep into Ben’s body. When he was done, he lay heavily on the soaked, hot body beneath him. Ben’s fingers still played restlessly with his hair until with another pull Ben urged, “Let’s go home tomorrow—wait there until we hear from Kate.” Nikolas nodded. Tex rolled his motorcycle to a stop outside Noah’s front door, his guitar strapped to his back. His house was only a ten-minute ride away and seeing as Noah lived in an exclusive gated community just like he did, there wasn’t any need for security to accompany him. It was the perfect excuse to take his new motorcycle—a Triumph Rocket 3R—for a spin. 

After unbuckling his helmet, which he hung from one of the handlebars, he swung his leg over the seat and strode up the steps, typing the entry code into the keypad by the side of the door. They all knew each other’s codes so they could let themselves in whenever they needed. 

As he entered the foyer, Tex unstrapped his guitar and stripped off his motorcycle jacket, tossing it over the back of a nearby chair. He left his guitar propped against the wall and followed the sound of voices out to Noah’s back yard. As he opened the sliding door and stepped out onto the paved patio, he realized he was the last to arrive. Everyone else was already gathered around the grill or lazing on the sun loungers next to the palm tree-framed pool.

Tex scanned the yard for Eden, wanting to say hello, but didn’t see her. He wandered over to where Noah was manning the grill, and asked, “Hey man, where’s the guest of honor?” 

Noah waved his tongs in the direction of the house. “She’s getting the salads from the kitchen; she’ll be back out in a minute. Although if you want to make yourself useful, you can go and help her bring them out. We may have gone a bit overboard and made four different types.”

Tex nodded at him and headed back to the house, sliding open the door that led to the kitchen and stepping in.

Eden was standing at the island counter, chopping some kind of garnish and sprinkling it on a massive bowl of potato salad. 

“Hey there darlin’, long time no see.”

She looked up and her face broke into a bright, genuine smile when she saw him.

“Tex!” Wiping her hands on a nearby dishcloth, she moved toward him. Tex reached for her and pulled her into a hug, inhaling the subtle scent of cherry blossoms that rose from the mass of blonde hair she was wearing piled up in a messy bun.

Eden tipped her head back to smile at him, and he didn’t know how she could be so small, considering Noah was almost as tall as he was. She was actually probably close to average height for a woman, but in his arms she seemed tiny. Apart from the height difference between her and Noah, though, you could tell they were related. They both had a dimple in their left cheek, and bright, wide smiles, both blond and blue-eyed, although Eden’s coloring was slightly darker—her hair honey-blonde to Noah’s sandy blond, eyes cornflower blue to his sky blue.  

It was good to see her again after so long; he was reluctant to let her go. When he did release her, he held on to her upper arms and studied her face. She was just as pretty as ever, but a hint of sadness shadowed her gaze—something he could guarantee that douchebag of an ex had put there. He didn’t like seeing that one little bit. 

Tex let go of her arms and gripped her chin, tilting her face up to get a better look at her. “Are you okay, sweetheart?” he asked.

Eden nodded, but her eyes had widened in surprise, and he realized that while he’d hugged her hello and goodbye plenty of times, he’d never really touched her quite like that before. And he wasn’t sure why he was now; except he didn’t like knowing someone had hurt her—didn’t like knowing that it might happen again if she wasn’t careful with who she trusted.

Not wanting to reveal that Noah had told them what had happened with her ex, he let her go and changed the subject. “Need any help?”

“I just have to finish the potato salad, and then could you help me carry these out?” She gestured toward three other enormous bowls.

“Sure thing.”

Eden went back to chopping whatever herb went on top of potato salad, answering Tex’s questions about what she’d been up to the last year and a half—managing to avoid any mention of her ex as she did so, he noticed.

Tex studied her as she spoke. Perhaps because he hadn’t seen her for a while, but with Noah’s concerns running through his mind, it was almost as if he was seeing her for the first time—as a woman, not just his friend’s little sister. He could see why Noah was worried about her being taken advantage of, particularly in a place like LA. She was as pretty as a picture. Prettier. All fresh-faced and innocent-looking, with those big blue eyes and soft, full lips, her slender curves evident even through her T-shirt and cut-offs. A lot of the men they associated with in the music business—hell, men in general—would take a single look and want to possess her. And if she was going to be at PR events with the band, he doubted it would take long for them to come panting after her. He tensed at the thought. She’d already had one piece of shit treat her badly. She didn’t need any more.

I leave her house, but I don’t get on a plane. I go to my parents and sleep in my bed the entire day with my phone turned all the way up in my hand. If there is a chance, she changes her mind, I want to be here.
