Joel Crofoot was raised in northern New York state on a large family sheep farm, then left home to join the United States Marine Corps at 18 years-old. After spending four years in Japan as a radio operator, Joel re-enlisted into the bomb squad (explosive ordnance disposal) and was stationed out of California. Two tours to Iraq later, Joel decided to leave the Marine Corps to pursue higher education and graduated with a doctorate in psychology in 2017. The Blue Boar Inn had been a very popular pub at the turn of the century. It was the sturdy sort of tavern you’d likely find in an English village. It had a thick wooden bar, scratched and marked from decades of use; there was even a deep gouge where an overzealous prohibitionist had taken an axe to it. Tall stools surrounded the counter, and mismatched farm tables lined the walls. The rafters of the short, seven-foot ceiling were exposed but clean, without even the wispy strands of a cobweb.

The glory days of the inn may have been bygone, but it still held its own. And like every good pub, there were the same loyal customers, though it wasn’t unusual to see a new face every day.

The bartender, Eadom, smiled at Robyn as she entered. “It’s been a bit, Robyn. I was beginning to think you’d found a new place to grab a pint,” he greeted.

Robyn returned his smile as she bent to pat Brian, the Saint Bernard, on his giant head where he slept near the door. The dog peeked through heavy lids at being pet and gave a sleepy wag of the tail before drifting off again. “Aw, come on, Eadom. You know I’d never abandon you like that. Where else can I sit on my favorite stool and have a chat with my favorite bartender?”

He leaned over the bar toward her and smirked. “Try to charm me all you like, you still got to pay.”

“When have I ever stiffed you, Eadom?”

He raised an eyebrow at her.

“Other than that one time, but that was forever ago. Besides, I paid you back.”

He slid over to the beer engine and pulled the handle three times, pumping dark, clear beer with a bright, fluffy head into a pint glass. Then, he handed it to her over the bar.

“You’re a gentleman, Eadom. Don’t let anyone tell you any different.”

“Yeah, yeah,” he said.

Robyn drank deep; it was smooth with the slightest hint of a bite. She sighed in contentment and set her glass on the counter. “Now then,” she called, clapping her hands together. “Who wants to challenge me to a round of darts?”

The other patrons avoided eye contact as she looked around the room. “Oh, come on, you cowards. No one wants to try to take on the champ?”

“Looks like they’ve all learned their lesson,” Eadom snickered.

Just then, the front door opened and a newcomer straggled in. He wore a long, black overcoat, a charcoal fedora, and a scarf over his nose and mouth to keep the toxins at bay. Hanging up his things on a coat-rack near the door, he revealed longish, dark brown hair, tousled from his hat and curled at the tips.

“You,” Robyn called to the stranger.

He looked up from eyeing Brian, his dark gaze meeting hers. Her stomach fluttered slightly. Robyn grinned at him, but he just stared blandly back.

“Want to play darts with me?”

He paused as though thinking over her offer, but his expression still gave nothing away. “All right,” he agreed in a steady baritone.

She tried to hide her glee at finding a new challenger, and such a fox at that.

“Now you’re in for it,” Eadom chuckled. He poured the man a pint and told him it was “on the house.”

“Are you kidding me, Eadom?” Robyn whined.

“Hey, I don’t want to hear any of your moaning. Anyone who’s willing to attempt to take you down a peg deserves a reward.”

“You wound me, Eadom.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“What’s your name, stranger?” Robyn asked her opponent as they made their way to the dartboard, noting his ringless left hand.

“Alaric Nottingham,” he answered.

Still, said code also meant he got saddled with research duty for their current job, trapped behind their luxury condo’s wall of glass overlooking Lower West Side of big, beautiful, and rotting-from-within Chicago. Static buzzed from the speaker at the main computer rig connected to the group comm in their family room opposite the foyer. Their console sat on the lacquer desk overlooking their spectacular view, a metallic beast Scarlet had assembled when they first set up shop here. Grif might not be on the job, but the others worked out in the field today. He perched in the leather seat. Until each member of his crew had walked in through the door, he wouldn’t be able to settle. He tapped his foot to the melody in his head, the cycle of different tempos in constant flux. His fingers flew across the keyboard as he dug in for more information on Torres Industries. The energy and commodities company was one of the businesses in the Aon Center, a skyscraper tall enough to loom over half of Chicago. After the insider tip he got last week on some of their seedier activities, they’d warranted a look. He knew at least a dozen people who would pay quality cash for the information to torpedo the corporation. If a company was rich and corrupt, Grif Blackmore would destroy them. Most times, the two went hand in hand anyway. He’d sworn the oath years ago and still upheld it today. The CEO’s image popped up on the screen. Danilo Torres, a guy who looked far too young and attractive to be in charge of such a wide-scale operation. Slender eyebrows and a wide smile accented the soft curves of his face, and he must’ve inherited the bronzed Filipino skin tone and thick, dark hair from his father, the former head of the company. He’d taken over a mere year ago when Torres Sr. went into retirement. A few more years in the industry, and the big open smile would vanish, replaced by the slick fake sort that circulated around the upper echelons of the big corporations. Grif had mastered his own game face far earlier than necessary. He lit his cigarette, taking in a deep drag, and continued to run through the list of the top dogs in the company, most of whom neared retirement age. The nicotine did little to calm him, but he let out the slow exhale anyway. The smoke drifted to the vaulted ceiling. John would be pissed at him for smoking inside again, but he could pin the blame on Tucker. Each one of the Outlaws took their turn sitting out on jobs, but Grif never made a good benchwarmer. If Luka told him this was a solid lead, he believed the man. Few had earned his trust, a fluid thing, but his top informant maintained a reliability rare in their realm of cutthroats and sellouts. Besides, the man ran a solid joint—Port and Porter was one of the few bastions for his kind that hadn’t been outed by the cops at some point. He sucked in another drag and leaned forward to ash into the nearest coffee cup littering the desk. Grif peered inside. Crap, he’d sprinkled ash in a half-filled mug.

No. Gods, don’t let this happen.

Meira tried to get closer to Gorgon, tried to take it back, to pull her fire back into herself. Bile stung her throat, blending with the vomit-inducing stench of burning flesh. The king stared back with shocked, awful, horror-filled eyes as her flames consumed him. He fell to his knees, and she could see him fighting the flames, his own black fire flaring out like sunspots only to be devoured by the red gold of her own fire in an instant.

One kiss was all it had taken.

They hadn’t even gotten to the undressing part, let alone the sex part. She’d turned on her flames and he’d kissed her lightly, so sweet. Except then he jerked back, a silent howl of pain contorting his features.

Already his bronze skin had turned charred before cooling to gray. Other parts continued to burn, glowing bright embers, and parts of him were sifting to ash. Like her mother in that field all alone.

“No, no, no,” Meira cried, hardly aware of the words pouring from her mouth.

She fell to her knees beside him, reaching in past the flames, which didn’t hurt her, to take his hand, already ashy against hers. “I’m so sorry. I’m here. Look at me.”

His eyes, already solid gray, shifted in his face as if searching. Could he see her? “I won’t let you die alone.”

A thunderous thud rattled the door. Samael.

By this time, most of the body had turned to ash.

Another slam against the door, this one causing a crack to appear in the thick wood. “Let me in!” Samael shouted, his voice muffled.

Meira forced herself to her feet. Her hands were shaking so hard, it took three tries for her to manage to unlock the door. She jumped back in time to get out of the way as Samael slammed it open. The door hit the wall behind with such force it embedded in the rock, small fragments of wood and stone falling to the floor, the gritty sound loud in the sudden silence as the man on the floor finished disintegrating and the fire disappeared all at the same time.

Samael ran to the heap of burned flesh and knelt beside it, he ran his fingers through the dust and ash then made a fist, seeming to grasp for control.

He won’t hurt me.

Meira shouldn’t be sure of that. He was Gorgon’s captain and would believe what his eyes were telling him. That she’d killed his king, the man he was sworn to protect.

“What have you done?” Samael asked in a low voice.

Hands to her mouth, Meira could only shake her head in horror. Was he asking her? Or asking his king?

Samael turned his head to spear her with a dark gaze full of rage, his fire sparking, like looking into an abyss that was reaching out for her. “What. Have. You. Done?”

No mistaking those growled words were directed her way. “It’s—” She had to stop and swallow around a throat so dry it felt coated in dust. Coated in a nameless man’s ashes. “It’s not—”

Samael bolted to his feet, crossing the room in two long strides, backing Meira up against the rock wall of the cavern the suite was carved from. “Don’t you dare say it’s not your fault.”

She should be terrified. This man had every right to kill her here and now. She’d heard many of Ladon’s men speak in hushed tones of respect about Samael’s skills when it came to killing. A rational person would be cowering and begging for her life.

But part of her she didn’t know even existed refused to be that woman. Not in front of him.

Samael’s emotions, released from their bonds, swirled and eddied around her like a riptide—anger, grief, blame. And one other, above all others. Protectiveness.

For her? Or his clan?
