Bruce led us to a room he’d decked out with whatever comforts he could find. Turned out bears could be pretty good thieves. He had a rug, blankets, extra sets of scrubs, a small space heater, battery-operated lights, and more importantly…food. We all ate fruit, bread, and cans of tuna. Then he pulled out a box of cookies. Chocolate chip heaven. He also had a jar of peanut butter, but we agreed to save that for later. Bruce swore he could easily get more, but I didn’t want to take any chances.

“What about that gun?” I asked him.

“Uh…I ditched it.” Bruce shrugged. “The only thing I know about guns is that if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can get hurt or killed.”

“Smart move.” I couldn’t bring myself to use it anyway. I could hardly expect anyone else to either. “I need rest. Sleep, guys. When we wake up, we’ll make a plan. Start searching these tunnels.” I hoped that would make them feel better about the situation, but it didn’t help me much. I’d made plans before and executed them well, but this involved a lot more than just me.

Todd curled up next to me, half in my lap, still in cat form. I petted him and scratched under his ears, enjoying his purring. “Why aren’t you shifting back, Todd?”

He butted his head against my stomach in response.

The other guys settled down in another room of the caves with blankets and tried to sleep, but I wouldn’t get any until I talked to Todd. “We need to talk, babe. Can you please shift back?”

The purring stopped, and Todd made a low, growly sound, but he didn’t move off me. If anything, he cuddled in more. If that were a no from him, I’d have to try a different angle.

“Todd? Can I try something?” I took his cat face in my hands, pulling it back to look at me. “Please?”

He blinked.

I knew he understood me. Every indication I’d had with this shifting stuff seemed to imply that you didn’t lose your human part when you shifted. “Relax and let it happen. Don’t fight me, okay?”

I closed my eyes and leaned back against the smooth wall of the cave. Todd settled in my lap. I concentrated, remembering how I’d pushed myself into Witch’s head. She’d done it with finesse as well as brute strength, which meant I could too. I thought about Todd. Put my hand on his head between his ears. Then I eased my consciousness into his.

It was dark with only a faint light, but I couldn’t tell where that light came from. Todd?

I walked in but had no idea where I was going. I knew I didn’t need to walk anywhere. Inside his head, I could be wherever I needed with a thought, but my instincts said to walk. Maybe he needed time to get used to me being there. He needed to understand it was me and not Witch. Todd, it’s me. It’s Austin.

The light grew a little brighter, illuminating a bed. I walked over and pulled the covers down. I sat on the edge. Todd, you joining me here?

He appeared then. In human form and naked.
