Soldiers were scooping us up and locking us away. Somehow Austin had fucked up again.

I shed my clothes and took bear form so I could crawl up into the ceiling. They wouldn’t find me. If they managed to find my room, I’d slip out and head back to the caves. I had stuff stashed back there from our first break out. I couldn’t stand the thought of being caged. Never again.

Making my way through the ceiling was dusty, and Bear sneezed a few times. I rubbed our nose with our paw. We were far enough away from the main halls that I didn’t think anyone would have heard me.

I’d blocked that witch and Austin out of my head, how Jaxson had taught me, so when I crawled out of the ceiling and into my room, I felt safe as I shifted to human form.

Then I screamed.

I covered my mouth. Someone was in my room. I shifted my legs, preparing to jump back into the ceiling—

“It Jaxson.”

I flipped on the light switch.

There he stood in front of me. Not only had he returned from the jungle, but he was cleaned up. Freshly shaved, and smelling nice. “Uh…hello.” And handsome. Something in my gut fluttered. “I was worried about you.”

“I here. Come back for you.”

“Jax…”

He stood and crossed the room, coming closer until he stood mere inches away from me.

“You look different.” I touched his cheek, and he leaned into it, closing his eyes.

“Smell more like you.”

“I like it.”

Jaxson opened his eyes. “I like you.” He leaned forward, awkwardly, but I knew what he wanted. It was the same thing I wanted, but we hadn’t shared it. We’d both been afraid. Plus, honestly, he was smelly and kind of gross before. Not anymore. He licked his lips. “I… Can I?”

“Yeah.” I closed my eyes and let him kiss me. His lips were soft but firm. I’d thought he would be a little more forceful, but no. He was kind and sweet, he’d never force. His outside was rough, and he had good reason to bristle, but under it all, he was like the rest of us. Broken. Bruce, Panther Avenged
