“What the hell’s going on?” Aiden demands.

Rachelle and Matthew walk into his office. “What did you do?” Matthew sneers.

I can’t think straight as Aiden’s roughly led out of his office by one of the policemen. “I didn’t do this, Father! How can you think that I’d do this to you and our company? You know me. Jeni, I didn’t do this,” Aiden states categorically.

My eyes fill with tears, and they spill over onto my cheek as my hand shoots to my mouth in shock at Aiden’s sheer desperation. He struggles against the policemen trying to break free.

“Jeni, I didn’t do this. I swear.” He panics.

The policemen grip him harder as hot, salty tears run down my cheeks and onto my top. I peer over at Matthew as Aiden’s forcefully escorted to the elevator.

My heart is breaking, shattering inside my chest. I have no idea what the hell is going on other than Aiden has been arrested for a serious crime. A sudden wash of anger floods my veins—anger over what, I’m not quite sure.

Rachelle walks over to me. “Are you okay?”

A loud sob expels from my mouth, followed by another and another. I can’t control them as I look up to see Matthew smirking. The asshole’s actually taking pleasure in all this chaos. So, I point at him. “That’s right, you fucking jerk. It couldn’t work out better for you, could it? Aiden’s arrested for embezzlement leaving you to fill the vice president’s chair,” I scream at Matthew, who looks at me, huffs, then exits Aiden’s office like the weasel he is.

Freezing, I barely dare to breathe and hope like hell I don’t interrupt her. She’s stunning. Brown hair piled on top of her head shows off the alabaster skin of her neck and shoulders, reminding me of the porcelain dolls my sister used to collect when she was younger. She runs her fingers slowly over the rail mounted in front of the mirrors, a hum working its way out of her throat. It’s sensual, the way her fingers glide over the scarred wood. Does she even realize she made that sound? What else might encourage that catchy little noise? My dick pushes insistently against my zipper, my breath hissing through my teeth at the possibilities.

She stops suddenly and her eyes fly open in surprise. Did I make a sound? Eyes the most unique color I’ve ever seen—the color of light filtered through whiskey—lock on mine. The phrase ‘tiger’s eye’ has to have been coined to describe their unique color. Her cheeks are flushed slightly, whether from her dancing or embarrassment I don’t know, the soft shade of pink contrasts with that smooth creamy skin everywhere else. Her chest moves as she struggles to catch her breath, and I force my eyes back on her face.

“Sorry—didn’t mean to startle you,” I say.

Wide eyes take me in as I move farther into the room with my hand extended. The pink color of her cheeks darkens the closer I get. Did Meredith hire another dancer? After a few months on tour, I should know everyone, but I don’t recognize her. With eyes like hers, no way would I not remember her. “I’m Jackson.”

Braced for the flare of recognition, the jolt when it doesn’t happen is a pleasant surprise. Her hand is cool in mine, but I can feel the strength beneath the satin as well as a zip of electricity where our hands connect.

“Charlie.” She’s tiny. Not as small as Meredith, but I still tower over her by almost a full foot. A spark zings up my arm and her breath catches. Did she feel it too? Reluctantly, I release her hand, and my fingers itch to snag a piece of hair that slithers out of her messy bun, brushing against her bare shoulder. Hooking my thumbs in my belt loops should help me avoid the temptation.

“Pleasure, Charlie.” Hoping to put her at ease, I smile. “Interesting name. How’d that come about? Were you named after Charlie Daniels?”

“I don’t know who Charlie Daniels is.” She smiles, wrinkling her nose, and her cuteness factor breaks my scale. “It was my great-grandma’s name. Not Charlie. Charlotte. That’s my full name. I couldn’t say Charlotte when I was little, so I told anyone who’d ask that my name was Charlie. It stuck.”

One shoulder lifts in a shrug, setting that loose piece of hair swinging. Her teeth bite into her lower lip after her ramble, as if she feels the need to stem the words.

Charlotte. It suits her. All curves and graceful lines, smooth as I roll the name around my tongue.

Chris’s fingers trembled over the email icon on the cracked screen of her Samsung phone.

“It’s from St. Catherine’s. Oh my God, Lesley, I’m going to pee my pants.”

“Spelling Bee, there’s no way they didn’t accept you. Get that tremble outta your pale-ass chin.” Lesley pulled her full lips and dark eyebrows into an assured pout. “You’re the smartest freshman in the history of Bridgeport High School. All that shit about string theory you were spouting off in the hallway last week? I didn’t even know you were speaking English. I thought Mr. Idelson was going to nut himself.”

“Eww.” Chris wrinkled her nose at the thought of her ancient Biology teacher doing anything that resembled nutting himself.

“Eww.” Lesley jutted her chin in agreement. “The point is, you’re a genius. Just open it.”

Chris pushed her brown hair behind her ears and attempted to duplicate Lesley’s self-confident posture. It was true. She was smart. At public school. St. Catherine’s Prep existed in a different universe. It was, without question, the best high school in the area, possibly in the whole state of Connecticut. The campus gleamed like a bastion of perfection, nestled securely into the part of Fairfield County dominated by large, estate-style houses and private waterfront property. The girls wore charcoal grey uniform skirts and the boys wore monogrammed blue blazers. The tuition was $35,000 a year. The thought that they might accept her there on a full scholarship for tenth grade seemed as ludicrous as Hagrid the groundskeeper sweeping into her mother’s postage stamp apartment to let her know she’d been accepted to Hogwarts.

Chris took a breath and clicked on the screen with shaking fingers. She blinked as the words swam into coherent sentences in front of her.

Dear Ms. Miller,

The admissions committee at St. Catherine’s School…outstanding application…meaningful performance…blah, blah, blah… Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you of your acceptance to St. Catherine’s School for the 2020-2021 school year.

“I got in.” Chris almost choked on the words.

“Told you.” Lesley deadpanned for a beat before she let out an excited scream. The noise ricocheted over the cracked cement courtyard of the K Street Housing Project. “Maybe now your mom will get off your case about hanging out with me.”

Chris grimaced. “Maybe.” Maybe not.

Lesley shimmied into a victory dance. “We need to celebrate!” Chris could predict the next words to come out of her mouth as clearly as if Lesley were reading off a script. “Do you have ten dollars?”

This is why my mother doesn’t like you, Chris thought, smiling.
