“What’s up, my girl?” Sawyer finally asks when I don’t say anything.
I turn and look at Knox.
Knox brings my hand up and kisses my knuckles. “I won’t speak for you, Hayley.”
I kind of wish he would though. My mouth dries just thinking about mentioning what I want Sawyer to do. Not because I’m worried about what he’ll say, but I’m afraid I’ll break down at having to voice it.
My mouth uncontrollably quivers, and I hate myself a little for it. I should be stronger than this. I’ve learned how to bottle everything up for so long that I should just accept the horrors of my life. But it’s like I finally see how bad the damage done to me is and these guys want to help bandage my wounds and help them heal instead of seeing how much more I can take until I just accept the pain as part of my life.
Sawyer’s brows knit together and he scratches his fingers over the back of his neck, ruffling his dark brown hair. “Can I try to guess and you can nod if I’m right?”
I slowly bob my head.
“Do you want me to kick Knox in the nuts for not kissing that pouty mouth of yours to distract you?” Sawyer asks, smirking at me.
I can’t stop the laugh that bubbles from my throat. “Sawyer.” My voice finally escapes my mouth, sounding stronger than I thought it could be.
Chuckling, Sawyer playfully fake-punches Knox. “You didn’t say no.”
Again, I laugh. “No. Please save all the dick punches for assholes who deserve it.”
“Damn, Knox. You got lucky, because you know I’d do it for her.” Sawyer attempts to whack Knox on the shoulder, but he dodges out of the way.
I step between the two of them.
“Double damn. Did you really just protect him?” Sawyer teases, fake-glaring at me. “I touched a dick on your behalf. Do you know how fucking weird that was?”
