EXCERPT

The man continued talking to the dog as though he hadn’t heard her. “You’re supposed to protect the place. Instead, you run off. I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

The dog whined and then laid down in front of the man. The pup lowered his head to the kitchen floor and then covered his muzzle with his paw.

Inwardly, Gianna was going, Aww… But outwardly she wasn’t letting down her guard with this man. He had a lot of explaining to do. Like why he’d walked into her house like he owned it.

The man straightened and turned to her. “If you put down the pan, we can discuss the fact that you’re in my house.”

Her arms slowly lowered, not because she trusted the man, but rather from muscle fatigue. She studied the man’s strikingly handsome face, looking for amusement, as though he were making a joke. But the look he gave her was very serious. How could he believe he had any rights to this place? This house had been in her family for generations.

She placed the pan on the countertop. Gianna picked up her phone, finding the battery had finally died. But he didn’t have to know that. She held it in her hand as though she were ready to make a call. “Okay. Explain yourself.”

His eyes twinkled again as though he found everything about her amusing. Well, the feeling didn’t go both ways.
