“Do I look or act gay?” I roll over so I can see his face and he can see mine. “You act like you. I don’t think there’s one way that gay people act like. If being sweet and gentle and reading tons of books screams gay, then yeah, you look and act gay.” He gives me a slow smile. “How do you always know what to say to make me feel better?” “Ehh…I just tell you the truth. Really though, you need to stop worrying about how you look or act. If you want to wear makeup and talk in a higher-pitched voice, then do it. I’ll be there for you every step of the way. Just be you.” I can tell if I don’t make him laugh, he’s going to cry. “Except for one thing…I don’t do glitter. Glitter is banned from this room and your body because it would get all over me, too, and sparkles do not go well with my complexion.” That makes him grin, and he rolls his eyes at my dramatic tone. “Glitter is at the top of my list now.” He smirks. If he really wanted glitter, I’d buy it for him and wear it wherever it landed if it would make him happy, but I don’t tell him that. “How about we skip glitter and start with some painting or cooking together. It seems like all the gay couples do that on their vlogs.” The words are out of my mouth before I realize that I basically compared us to a gay couple. Zach is laughing and pointing at my face. “Oh my God, your face! That was priceless!” “Shush it; you know what I meant.” It’s the first time I’ve heard Zach laugh like this in ages, and I don’t want him to stop. I hook my arm around his back to pull him closer—until he’s where he usually sleeps—and kiss him on the top of his head.
