Beneath the Sheets by LM Mountford

Title: Beneath the Sheets: A Tropical Cocktail Romance
Author: L.M. Mountford
Genre: Contemporary Romance/Friends to Lovers/Holiday Romance/2nd Chance Romance
Release Date: July 16, 2021

They were the best of friends. Then they shared a night of passion and in the morning she was gone and Alex has spent years trying to move on.

But then an email arrives out of the blue and suddenly he finds himself boarding the first plane bound for Australia with nothing but his passport and an overnight bag. He’s no idea what he’ll do, or he’s going to say, but one thing’s for sure…

He’s not going home without her.

Alex didn’t know how much more he could stand.

This feeling of connection was so intense, it was driving him mad. No, she was driving him mad.

This wasn’t how he’d planned for the evening to go. Deep down, a part of him was screaming that they should stop, that this was wrong, and everything would change between them, but he just couldn’t. Not now. She was just too intoxicating. The feel of her writhing around him; luxurious heat enveloping him, squeezing and rippling around his cock, dragging him in. He was drowning in her and he loved every second of it.

They had started slow, but all that was gone now and her normally sweet voice, was now low and throaty with lust as he thrust harder and deeper. Her hands were everywhere. Fisting in the sheets. Grabbing the headboard. Drawing lines of fire down his back before finally coming to settle on his buttocks, nails biting deep. He knew he shouldn’t look, that he was too close, but he just couldn’t tear his eyes away. She was so beautiful. Stretched out beneath him, her head was rolling back into those long raven tresses, back arched and bountiful, ivory bosom bouncing as her lips curled up, grinding her clit into his root, demanding more.

How long had he wanted to see her this way? Needed to meet, to claim the freaky little sex kitten she had kept chained inside for so long?

Unabashed and unrestrained. Shaking with need and eyes dark with ecstasy. This was a part of herself she was sharing only with him. The thought sent a tremor of primitive possessiveness coursing through him. She was his.

“Sir, we will be beginning our landing approach soon.” A female voice said, stirring Alex from his dreams and dragging him back to the world. Dazzling rays of sunlight shone through his half-closed shutter and his eyes blinked against the sudden brightness before he reached out and shut the barrier. His legs ached, and he tried to stretch, only the taught nylon belt across his waist forced him to remain seated and so he settled for reaching beneath his glasses and rubbing the sleep from his eyes. Only after he’d reclined back into the padded leather seat did he notice the stewardess standing over him.

She was a pretty thing, in her early twenties with naturally blonde hair, catlike, jade-green eyes and a sweet heart-shaped face and a pale complexion that complimented the Airline’s uniform she filled out so nicely. Though Alex couldn’t help noticing that she had perhaps one too many buttons of the shirt undone, giving him a glimpse of a bright pink bra as she leaned forward to offer him the drinks’ tray.

“Would you care for any refreshments before we land, sir?”

All too aware of the erection bunched uncomfortably down his trouser leg, the memory of the dream still burning his loins, he nervously accepted a cup of sweet, milky tea. As she moved to the next aisle, he couldn’t help admiring the way the knee-length navy skirt emphasised the sway of her buttocks as she walked. First class certainly had its perks.

He drained the airline mug in one swing, the liquid warmth easing the parched feeling in his throat while the sudden rush of caffeine gave him a much-needed jolt of life. He had had difficulty sleeping on the plane due to sudden bouts of turbulence, and when sleep came, it was infested by dreams.

The intercom buzzed to life just as the pretty stewardess was making a return trip to collect the passengers’ rubbish and used receptacles. Though the flight was based out of London Gatwick, the captain’s accent was difficult to place. So thick and leathery, Alex had trouble narrowing it down further than Australian, New Zealand or perhaps one of the southern white African States.

“All right Ladies and gentlemen, we have just been cleared to land at Sydney airport. Please make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position, that your seatbelt is securely fastened, and all carry-on luggage is stowed underneath the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins. Please turn off all electronic devices until we are safely parked at the gate. The flight attendants are currently walking around the cabin to make a final compliance check and pick up any remaining cups and glasses. Thank you.”

Alex grimaced at the thought of landing, then as his cup was taken, an idea occurred to him and he reached over to flip the blind covering his window. Light flooded his vision and he quickly turned away to let his eyes adjust before turning back to look outside. The full beauty of Sydney was spread out beneath him. He felt his heart leap with excitement at seeing the Australian city for the first time before the Airbus began to bank and he sunk back into his seat.

His centre of gravity shifted with the plane and he felt a sudden sickly feeling in the pit of his stomach as the roar of the aircraft’s descent filled his ears and shocked his brain. Feeling the inevitable dip as the plane’s nose descended, Alex tried to imagine himself somewhere else.

Anywhere else.

Walking the pier at Weston-Super-Mare. Seeing a show at the Bristol Hippodrome. Eating fish and chips in his parents living room on Friday’s after school.

He tried to focus on that, but then he saw Sarah sitting across from him, sneaking chips from his plate and giggling playfully when he tried to grab them back. Then they were right back in that room at the Holiday Inn on prom night, their naked bodies entwined and…

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Sydney Airport. The Local time is 01:00 pm and the temperature is a balmy twenty-six Celsius. For your safety and comfort, we ask that you please remain seated with your seatbelt fastened until the Captain turns off the Fasten Seatbelt sign. This will indicate that we have parked at the gate and that it is safe for you to move about the cabin. We remind you to please wait until inside the terminal to use any electronic devices. I’d like to thank you for joining us on this trip and we are looking forward to seeing you on board again in the future. Have a nice day.”

‘Goddamnit!’ Alex silently cursed as his heart raced with a potent cocktail of arousal and frustration.

Despite the captain’s instructions, many of the passengers had already begun to rise from their seats. Glancing at the elderly woman sitting in the seat next to his and then down to the bulge in his trousers, he decided to wait until the flow had subsided and only then did he unfasten his seatbelt. He rose from his seat and gratefully stretching his legs as the old woman he’d been sitting next to disappeared into the thinning crowd. He reached up into the overhead compartment and quickly retrieved his holdall from the back.

Slinging it over his shoulder and joining the rapidly thinning line of departing passengers, Alex felt his heart flutter and couldn’t help the blush that crept over his cheeks as the pretty stewardess who’d woken him and served him tea stepped out of the first-class kitchen. Seeing him there, she smiled and handed him a small card before wishing him an enjoyable holiday. Stepping through the airlock and into the air-conditioned tunnel that led to the arrival’s terminal, he let himself be led by the press of bodies before raising the card to eye level. One side was blank except for the airline’s logo but turning it over he felt his blush deepen at seeing two sets of phone numbers written in red ink and Alexis – Call me X scribbled beneath them.

He quickly stored the card in the inside pocket of his jacket.

Following the signs for arrivals at every intersection, he let out an impressed whistle as the tunnel suddenly opened out onto passport control, a huge chamber lit by rows of skylights and which was split across the middle by a row of counters and hulking machines. Joining the closest queue, he fished out his new passport and boarding pass from the bag before handing them to an elderly lady at the counter while two men fed the holdall into the x-ray machine. He tried not to appear too nervous as he glimpsed the bag as it appeared on the monitor, but no alarms went off and it took him a moment to realise the lady was speaking to him.

“I’m sorry?”

“Are you carrying any fruits or vegetables?” she asked again, her voice throaty and with an obvious note of annoyance at having to repeat herself.

“Reason for travel, business or pleasure?”

“I’m visiting an old friend.” he said truthfully but then she flashed him a look over her round glasses and he added “Pleasure.”

“Anything to declare?”

She stamped his passport hard enough it produced an audible thump then handed it back without another glance. Pocketing the booklet, Alex turned away, then paused and glanced back at the woman at the desk.

“Did you sue them?”

“Who?” She didn’t even spare him a second look up from her work as another of the passengers stepped forward.

“The charm school.” He didn’t wait for her response before grabbing his holdall and walking out of immigration, muttering “Aussie Battleship.”

Despite his one-way ticket, he’d only brought the one bag and so moved past baggage claim and out into a wide-open atrium filled with shops and cafés. A single service desk with four busy operators stood in its centre. Three separate arrival boards hung from the ceiling and on the distant wall, above the three sets of automatic doors leading out onto the street, a large sign proclaimed WELCOME in the bold blue font on a white field.

Spotting the huge crowd of people gathered to meet their respective arrivals, Alex quickly cast his eyes over the throng of faces and name cards but there was no sign of her. It was unlike her to be tardy but reasoning that she had probably just been caught in traffic, he began walking towards the nearest café when he heard a familiar voice suddenly cry his name. His heart leaping at the sound, he wheeled around and was almost knocked off his feet when a body slammed into his chest.

“Stop speaking,” he mutters against my lips. He rolls over until he’s hovering on top of me, keeping us connected with his tongue. I’ve rarely been kissed, but the few times I have pale in comparison.

He kisses me like he’s reaching inside my chest and stealing my breath for his own. Like he’d let the world burn, if only I’d ask him for the ashes.

Finally, he breaks away, his eyes roaming over my face, the weight of his body pressing on mine the only thing tethering me to the ground. “I’m going to say something, and I need you to listen to me.” His palm runs down my hair again, and I lean into his touch. His other hand grips my chin, his thumb pressing into my bottom lip. “Being with you is what I like. However you need. However you want. Getting you off gets me off. Feeling you… learning all the different parts of you—” He swallows, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “It’s a fucking gift. I’ll be whatever you need me to be.”

My chest spasms, stomach warming. Emotion swirls in the center of my gut like fog, unfurling through my body, filling up the empty space. My hand lifts, fingers scratching against his stubble. “And who gets to be what you need?”

His eyes flash with heat, his lips turning up in the corner. His hand moves from my chin, skimming up my cheek and wrapping around the back of my neck. Leaning in, his nose brushes against mine, the moment thick with a tender energy.

“You’re the only thing I need, little bird.”

Chicago scrap metal mogul Clifford Kinsley has never encountered an obstacle he couldn’t dismantle. Until he inherits a dukedom burdened with mountains of debt, stifling rules, and people who want to ship his seven-year-old daughter off to boarding school. He’s stuck with the title for life. Which leaves only one solution: kill the duke. And for that, he’ll need the assistance of a professional.

But if they dare to open their hearts, they might discover that the greatest treasures of all can’t be buried.

The leftovers of the Mad Duke.” He huffed a little laugh.

Yes. I understand you run a scrap collection business? Perhaps I could employ you to haul everything away.”

I was in the recycling business.” His mouth tightened into a hard line. “Now, unfortunately, I’m a goddamned duke, if you’ll pardon my French.”

Sabine tried not to laugh. She really did. But he was so delightfully, blunt-spokenly American.

Has your new title destroyed your ability to pluck valuable bits from the rubbish?”

He adjusted his spectacles, assessing her with a steady gaze. His eyes were an icy blue, like the glacial caves in the Alps—quiet, still, and eerily beautiful.

I don’t expect it has, no.”

Since we are neighbors, maybe you would like to lend your expertise and help me straighten out this mess of a house? As payment, you may keep what you wish of the saleable items. After I have taken any that are of interest to me, of course.”

Hartleigh folded his arms across his chest. “Why, may I ask, did you purchase this house and all the items in it if you didn’t want them?”

I do want them. Or, rather, I want some of them. There are items in this collection, purchased long ago, that are of great interest to me, if only I can find them in the mess.”

So you’re a collector yourself, then.”

She chuckled. “More of a treasure hunter.”

See, Daddy?” Lola grinned at her father. “I told you!”

You told him I was a treasure hunter?” Sabine asked.

No. I told him you were a pirate.”

Oh, God.” Hartleigh put a hand to his temple. “I’m so sorry. Pirates are her new favorite thing. The trip across the ocean was very long, and we’d just read Treasure Island together…”

Please, don’t apologize.”

He leaned so far forward he rocked the piano bench onto the front two legs. “No, I must. I’m sure there’s some way I could have better explained that you don’t call your new neighbor a pirate, even if she does collect treasure, and…”

But I am a pirate,” Sabine said. “Haven’t you heard of the infamous La Capitaine? I am she.”

Hartleigh gaped at her. “I, uh…” Before he could stammer a coherent word, the piano bench slipped, sending the peculiar new duke tumbling to the floor with a resounding crash.
