“Why?” I tilt my head back, all the way back. “Why are you doing this?”
He tilts his head, his ears almost canine in the way they are silhouetted against his profile.
“Is it because you can? Is it a…a,” I blink, “a debt of some kind?”
He stills.
“My father, this is about how he betrayed the Mafia, right? You’re one of them?”
“Lucky guess.” His lips twist, “It is about your father, and how he promised you to me. He reneged on his promise, and now, I am here to collect.”
“No.” I swallow… No, no, no.
“Yes.” His jaw hardens.
All expression is wiped clean of his face, and I know then, that he speaks the truth. It’s always about the past. My sorry shambles of a past… Why does it always catch up with me? You can run, but you can never hide.

Of all the groups to emerge during the folk era of the 1960’s, first the Chad Mitchell Trio and later The Mitchell Trio were unequivocally the best. They were wildly popular, though, on college campuses throughout the country during this turbulent time and fostered political and social awareness among thousands of young men and women as they faced the challenging era ahead.

But as Mike, Chad and Joe Frazier raced along a frantic treadmill of rehearsals, recording sessions, nightclubs and concerts, Mike and Chad began to realize the demand for musical perfection was the only thing they had in common. Their personalities were and remain polar opposites. When Chad left in 1965, neither mourned the parting. John Denver replaced Chad. Two years later, Joe’s demons caught up to him forcing Mike and John to fire Joe.

When folk reunions became popular, fans and folk historians agreed that The Trio was the one group that would never take the stage again. Their schism was just too great.

Mike and Chad and Joe hadn’t spoken in twenty years. Then came a call. I will if he will. Their mentor and music director Milt Okun worried they were making a mistake. They couldn’t possibly be as good as their fans remembered.

They were. Mike and Chad kept their day jobs, and their distance. But once again, they shared the music.


About The Author

Mike Murphey is a native of New Mexico and spent almost thirty years as an award-winning newspaper journalist in the Southwest and Pacific Northwest. Following his retirement, he enjoyed a seventeen-year partnership with the late Dave Henderson, all-star Major League outfielder. Their company produced the Oakland A’s and Seattle Mariners adult baseball Fantasy Camps. He is author of the award-winning novels Section Roads and The Conman… a Baseball Odyssey along with his Physics, Lust and Greed time travel series. We Never Knew Just What it Was is his first effort at non-fiction. Mike loves books, cats, baseball and sailing. “Damien, you should have told me you were bringing someone with you,” his mother admonishes. “Regardless, I am so happy you’re here. Nice to meet you, Chloe.” Her black hair is knotted in an elegant low bun, round diamonds in her earlobes, and her eyes, a shade paler and less intense than his, gleaming. I plaster a smile on my face, bathing in her love for him. So, this is how true parental love looks and feels.
“And this is my sister,” he says just before his phone rings. Panic settles in my core, but it quickly turns into frustration. Can’t he bloody turn off his phone for one hour? I grit my teeth at him mouthing “just a moment” with a placating smile on his face that he can shove somewhere else for all I care.
“Hi, I’m Sophia.” His sister extends her hand, and her electric blue eyes shine, a smile lifting her heart-shaped lips. My social skills shrink by the second the more time I spend with them. The du Monts and du Skys won the genetic lottery.
I itch to hide, cover myself up as if I am underdressed. My simple black cocktail dress feels cheap and prickly against my skin compared to their designer outfits. As I peruse my surroundings, a broad chest filling the crispest white shirt I have ever seen catches my attention. My eyes travel up to meet his—brown with specks of gold and green. He has a straight, elegant nose, perfect lush lips, a strong jaw and defined cheeks, his sandy blond hair trimmed at the sides, longer on the top.
His eyes wander down my body as if he’s checking me out, almost clinically. I gnash my teeth when his nose scrunches up, a bored expression plastered on his smug face, and he turns to Sophia, dismissing me. No one ever dismisses me. He opens his mouth, and I straighten my shoulders in offense because, call it intuition: he doesn’t like me.
“Another casualty?” he asks. Sophia’s face contours into sympathy, and it hits me. He’s Filip, Bria’s brother.
“My name is Chloe, not casualty, you prick.”
His lips turn into a half smile, and my knees weaken. What is wrong with me? How in the world can I be attracted to an asshole who looks like his mother is entitlement and his father sex and rudeness?
“The casualty has a name?” he goads.
I shut my eyes at the sarcasm spilling from his sinful mouth. Does this sniffing out weaknesses run in their families?
“Filip, don’t scare her off,” warns Sophia.
“Don’t worry, Sophia,” I say. “It would take a man to do that, not a boy who poses as one.”
