“Thanks! See nothing to worry about Mia.” I took her hand to make sure she gets out of her seat. She grabbed the cup that was next to her on the desk with her free hand as I said. “Gentleman, you can just tell Mr. Cohen that Mia’s roommate’s granny busted a hip line dancing or bungee jumping or something.”
I watched as Mia’s cheeks flushed with a dark pink.
“You knew?”
“Of course, I knew.” I said with a prideful grin.
I escorted her through the underground parking lot and opened the passenger door of my Toyota Landcruiser.
“This, is your car?” she asked incredulous.
“You were expecting something else?” After unlocking the vehicle, I held the passenger door open for her.
“Yes. A big pretentious, bright yellow hummer perhaps?”
“Are you disappointed?”
“No. Only surprised.” Her brow knitted with concern. “I didn’t think we were going off site. If Trent checks on me…”
“Here we go again with this.” I have to work to keep the snark out of my voice. “What makes you think he holds any weight with me?”
“I don’t know what weight he holds with you, but he’s still my boss.”
“I’m your boss.”
“You hate me.”
“I don’t hate you.”
“You’ve said it, you’d rather have my best friend as an assistant.” She reminded me of the rude words I spoke before.
I’m disgusted with my actions towards her.
“That’s not exactly accurate.” I held open the passenger door for her.
“Trent hired me.” Her voice quaked. “He can fire me.”
“Mia…”
“Honestly, Trak the only reason I even still have a job is because of Trent. If you recall, you sent me packing over perfume.”
“MIA!”
“WHAT?!”
“Would you just get in the vehicle?” Making my eyes gentle, I added. “Please.”
Surprise flashed over her face before she huffed at me. But she sat her cute ass on the passenger seat anyway.
As we took off through Manhattan, and I finally had her alone next to me, I felt myself loosen up.
Furious, she stared out the window. “What was I thinking, getting into this car with you?”
“God, you’re gorgeous when you’re angry.”
I meant it, but of course the comment only infuriated her more, inciting vehement wrath.
“What the… WHAT?!” she shouted. “Pull over and let me out of this car right now Trak!”
Her eyes we’re positively on fire. I could do this all day. I maneuvered the vehicle to the side of the road.
“But I haven’t shown you the something yet.”
“I can only imagine what that something is.” She quips.
“Mia, I don’t want to be enemies.”
“You drew those lines, Trak. From the moment we met, first when you stole my taxi, then when you treated me so appallingly at my interview. At the office. On sites. Shall I go on?”
“I did all of that. Could you… would you… give me a second chance?”
“What makes you think you deserve one. You’re hardly even a friend.”
“Mia…”
“You can’t even say it!” She was so hurt. All because of my behavior. I wished I could make her understand.
“I’m sorry. I was completely wrong to have ever treated you that way. I have been a first-rate ass. Please forgive me.”
I couldn’t take it anymore. Leaning towards her, I gently cradled the back of her head in my hand. Her chestnut hair was like silk against my palm and fingers.
Risking her right hook—or the probability of her clawing her nails across my face—I brought her soft, pink lips closer.
Her gaze lifted to mine, her dark, thick lashes framing her ocean blue eyes. The storm in them still raging.
“Please.” My voice was all but a whisper as I pressed my lips against hers.
Her mouth tasted of the chai tea she had been sipping, cinnamon spice and clove. My eyes fell closed as I leaned into her.
Mia stiffened, but only for a moment, before she melted into the embrace.
Her sweet lips were soft and warm. The kiss was tentative at first like we
were testing each other.
Tasting each other.
And Mia tasted like perfection.

“I’m not tired,” I say in a breathy tone.
“What is it you want to do then, Rowan?” I swallow hard as he looks me in the eye. There’s something dark dancing in his, and I want it. I want to reach out and touch it. There’s a strange feeling in my chest when he takes a step closer to me and then another. Our chests are nearly touching at this point, and a shiver runs through my body.
“You have nothing to say?” he asks, keeping his eyes trained on mine.
“You. I want to do you.” The alcohol has loosened my tongue, and I blurt the words out. The thoughts I’ve had of him for years now. Mather smirks at me before shaking his head.
“You couldn’t handle me.”
“Try me,” I answer. Mather’s nostrils flare, and his eyes flash with fire before he pulls his hands away from me. He takes a small step back and looks me up and down, causing bumps to form on my skin.
“Kneel,” he demands. I snicker, thinking it’s a joke. He raises an eyebrow and challenges me.
“You’re kidding?”
“Do I look like I’m kidding?” his tone hard. My insides tremble as I think about doing it. I almost drop to my knees for him, but something stops me. I don’t know if it’s all the alcohol I’ve consumed tonight, but I stand my ground.
“Just like I said, you couldn’t handle me. Go to bed, Rowan.”
“I’m not ready for bed,” I tell him. He moves to walk away, and this time I fall to my knees. Shouldn’t this be degrading? Shouldn’t it feel all wrong? For some reason, it doesn’t, and I stay, on my knees, gazing up at him.
Mather turns back, seeing me on the floor at his mercy before he steps back into my space. His hand comes to cup my cheek and slowly feathers his fingers over my flesh. His thumb comes to my lip, gently stroking over the bottom one.
“Open your mouth,” he says, keeping his eyes on me the whole time. Slowly I part my lips for him, and he slides his thumb inside. I close my lips around it and twirl my tongue over the tip. He watches me, waiting. I suck his thumb, imagining it’s his cock. I continue to suck until I can feel heat pool between my thighs.

The moment the door of the limo opens, I lose my breath and resolve that any chance of me getting, let alone keeping, my shit together is not an option.
One leg emerges, clad in dark denim, then before I know it, he’s standing before me. His pitch-black hair is a little longer than I remember but still meticulously styled. Her head spun and the back of her neck felt moist. She wondered whether a bead of sweat would run down the side of her neck and put a blemish on her white satin bodice. A scarlet letter would be better suited for the likes of her. She looked at her bosom now, half expecting it to be embroidered there, but little diamantes

that sat along the edges of her dress glinted back at her, laughing, mocking, challenging.

She looked up again, trying to ignore the warning signs her body was giving her. But seeing the faces as they turned towards her in a sick anticipation, she felt faint. They waited for her, all of them, ready to attack, ready to condemn her for her sins. She blinked hard, hoping that when she opened her eyes, they would not be there, that she would be somewhere far away, wishing it was not too late. But here she was, about to walk in the middle of the throngs who sat in their pews ready for the harlot to be wed.


About the Author

Hailing from India, and growing up in Melbourne, Rowe has a passion for words, encouraged by a mother who spent most of her spare time with her head buried in a book. Of course, she was going to become dazzled by the words of Enid Blyton, Louisa May Alcott and later on, the likes of Sidney Sheldon and even the early works of Harold Robbins. Her tastes are diverse and she can go straight from Margaret Mitchell and Alexandre Dumas, to Liane Moriarty and Jeffrey Archer in the blink of an eye.

It was finding her own style that was problematic. Trying to recreate stories in the same vein as her gurus was not fulfilling and in 2019, she embarked on a Masters in Writing. She found her passion and established her style; so keen was she to get going, that by the end of the year, she had completed, edited and published her first novel, Never The Moon, a love story. The psychological drama, She Remembered, came soon after and when she had more time on her hands, having completed the degree at the end of 2020, she just couldn’t stop herself. The Bad Seed came next, exploring small town prejudice and young love. Most of her work deals with the human condition, particularly from a woman’s point of view, which draws from her own experiences and that of others around her, with their permission. The novel, Becoming Ruthless, is one such work.

Rowe lives with her family and teach English and Art at a school in Melbourne’s West.

“You’re sexy. I’ve been watching you all night, waiting for that douche of yours to leave your side.”

My palms warm, angry with fire magic ready to tell him where to shove it. I spin, teetering on my thin heels and barely catching myself to find him… gone.

I scan the humans around us, but no one is paying any attention. Whoever was here is no longer in my space. My scanning continues until, through a part in the throng, I spot Jasper by the bar, glaring. His hand is lowering to his side and he smiles crookedly at me before snatching up the three waiting shots and coming through the crowd back to me.

Silently, he hands Maggie and I each one. Maggie downs hers before twisting to face the guy she’s dancing with. I grasp the waiting glass but do nothing.

“Jealous much?” I lift my chin, smirking, knowing I’m winning more of his heart piece by piece.

“Jealousy implies caring.” But his tone wavers, proving to me he’s lying—both to himself and me.

“I think you care more than what you want to admit.”

His eyes darken and suddenly he appears very sober. For a beat, I think I ruined our night, but his easy smile slips on again and he rolls his eyes, shoving the seriousness of the topic away. “Just take your shot, Adalyn.”

I nudge my chin toward his, sitting in his pinched grip. “You first.”

He smiles lazily again, bringing back the Jasper I had moments ago. I down my shot too and let the song pick up my movements. His arms wrap around my waist, his face dropping in the crook of my neck.

“Maybe I do care a little bit.”

I stop breathing. Am I imagining this? What did he put in the shot?

“And I was jealous. I’m jealous of every man and woman staring at you right now. Of everyone who wishes they were in my position. Of knowing their small human minds are visualizing you without this dress.”
