My reading is all over the place…but bends mainly toward middle grade and younger books. Believe it or not, I only like happy endings and kid stories usually have happy endings. Not listed here are Encyclopedia Brown, Archie Comics, and Little House books… and of course the incredibly suspenseful The Monster at the End of This Book.

● The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis

○ The second to last book in the Chronicles of Narnia series, this is the story of a kid on an adventure and the birth of Narnia. It taught me the concepts of in-between places and infinite choices… and the consequences of deplorables. The most significant thing to me, though, was the curse. When I read it, it seemed like an innocuous little ditty in the story, but what I didn’t know was that by reading it, it planted itself in my spirit and affects my every decision now. I’ve read this book probably 12 times since I was 14, and I still love it.

● Star Trek The Return by William Shatner

○ Just WOW. This is the story that bridges gaps and connects so many storylines… plots written decades apart by different authors before some concepts were even developed. Here’s a teaser – Spok, Kirk, and Picard are all Borg!!

● Star Trek Federation by Judith Reeves-Stevens

○ This one tests the Federation principles. When two Enterprises meet in a time rift, Kirk wonders if the Federation as he knows it has survived for a hundred years,

and Picard wonders if the stories of Kirk’s clever lawlessness and dedication are true. It explores the concepts of trust and enduring legacies.

● Wild Seed by Octavia Butler

○ Anyanwu is an immortal shape shifter, and Doro is a spirit-consuming, body-shifting life force. Anyanwu just wants to be left alone, but Doro wants to breed her with other exceptional beings in his quest to create a superior gifted race… then he wants to eat her.

● The Red Tent by Anita Diamant

○ Jacob had twelve sons and one daughter. This is the story of his daughter and the women who raised her. It’s not a mild story, and it touches on some biblical dogma that will likely upset some people, but overall, it’s a really good story.
