“It was a summer romance, and when you went back to the city you forgot about me. We were kids. It wasn’t a big deal.” Although it had seemed like a big deal at the time, Zach had moved on.
“Yes, it was a big deal.” The breath [Beth] exhaled was a whisper on the night air. “Ever since…I got here, I’ve been trying to find a way to tell you the truth.”
“You don’t have to. It was a long time ago.” Yet, walking across the land they’d explored as teens, it seemed like no time at all.
“I want to. I cared about you a lot. You were the first boy who ever kissed me. You were special. What we had together was special.”
“Agreed, it was.” Beth hadn’t been his first kiss, but she was the girl he’d always remembered. The way she smiled at him had lit up his world, and in some ways, it still did….
Beth stared at her feet… “Although we thought we loved each other, I didn’t know what love was. I was…only fifteen.”
“I’d just turned seventeen but I still thought you were the one for me.” … Beth wanted to tell him the truth so [Zach] owed her honesty in return, at least as much as he…could share.
