Kinsu’s eyes had watered, stinging all night.
Chase’s hands were stiff with pain.
Rhee’s nose gravitated toward foul odors.
Alex’s tongue had swelled up, burning for an hour.
But time would not wait until perfect conditions arrived. It was all starting to add up and weigh down.
Still, Jordan, Chase, and Alex met up on the walk to school.
“I told you guys it wasn’t a good idea to go into the preserve.” Alex swung his backpack from one
shoulder to the other. “My tongue is so swollen.”
Jordan rolled his eyes. “Well, you went, too, and here we are.”
“You never even stopped to give me a chance to explain why we shouldn’t have been there,” Alex said.
Jordan glared at Alex. “When I looked back and saw you, you were way behind us. That was your
opportunity to turn around, and you didn’t.”
“We could’ve at least talked it out.”
Jordan threw his arms up. “Well, we didn’t, so now what?”
“What do you mean by that, Jordan? It’s okay for our lives to be falling apart?”
“Look, we’re doing good by being out there. It’s hard, but we’re getting closer. You saw it. Those people
need us.”
