And I have no idea how to heal the part of my heart that is fractured.
My friend was wise beyond his age, he knew me more than I knew myself. The career, the money, the promotion, they all seem futile now. Iโm stuck with no idea how to turn my life around. Until I receive a package that opens my eyes to new possibilities. And dreams I never thought I should reach for.
The journey has one endgame: find happiness again and my place in this world.
After driving for weeks, I end up in Green Mountain, a small town in Tennessee, a far cry from my hometown of Chicago.
And then I meet her. Dahlia Ellis. My soulmate. My other half. My true purpose.
Even in my wildest dreams, I would never have thought that she was where I was supposed to be.

โOkay, hereโs the thing,โ I said when I stopped by Dahliaโs shop before the opening hours. โIโve learned from a very reliable source that today is Buddyโs birthday. How about if we throw him a party tonight? Iโm sure Jack would love that.โ
Dahlia moved to my right, removing wrinkles from yet another gown with a portable vapor machine.
โIt looks good,โ I said, taking a step back and admiring the wooden shelf Iโd just fixed on the wall next to the shoe display, making sure it was leveled.
โI love it,โ she said, a smile in her voice. โWhat do you have in mind?โ
I gave her a mischievous stare. โLots of things.โ
Dahlia poked my arm. โBuddyโs birthday, Nick. Focus.โ My gaze traveled down her body. โMy eyes are up here,โ she said, pointing to her face with two fingers. โYou seem to love planning stuff, so Iโm all ears.โ
โHow about we bake him some dog cookies? I found a recipe online, and itโs super easy. And we could get party hats and balloons and all the silly things kids love. My neighbors are away for the weekend, so Buddy is staying over with me.โ
โWould it be just us three?โ
My hands found her hips, and I drew her to me. โOnly Jack, you, and me. And Buddy, of course. Iโm sure Jack would love the party setup.โ
Dahlia skimmed her lips over mine. โHe will. And thank you for always thinking about him. Making him feel special.โ
โYou two deserve the best. Iโm the lucky one. Would tonight work? If you guys can make it.โ
When did I get excited at the idea of throwing an old dog a party?
โYep,โ Dahlia said. โVery important question, though. Will we be able to kiss after the party?โ She quirked a brow, offering me a cock-awakening smile, her eyes glistening.
I removed the vapor thingy from her hand and placed it back on the rack, looping my arms around her. โYouโre right. I love plans. Always have. And right now, I can tell you I did a lot of strategizing this week. And most of them involved a very naked me and a very naked you and lots of kissing. Last weekend seems like ages ago.โ
I leaned in to claim her mouth, her pink lips tasting like cherry. My balls tightened as Dahliaโs hand rubbed my junk over the fabric of my shorts.
โBirthday party for the kids, then naked after-party for us. Thatโs the plan.โ
She purred in my ear, the sound almost bringing me to my knees.
