Cursed J.P. Jackson © 2022 All Rights Reserved “I am not wearing this.” Cam tossed the skimpy garment onto his sun-dappled bed while Sen, his man-in-waiting, a Kijimuna tree sprite, wrung his long-boned but tiny hands. Sen glared at Cam, but his nervous hand wringing never stopped. Cam returned the stare, hoping his stubbornness would win. Eventually, Cam broke the connection and focused his sights on the far wall of his room. A new tendril wove its way up the wall. Everything the fae used or constructed was in harmony with the environment. The bed had been crafted from woven tree roots. The mattress pillowed from being stuffed with a combination of dried grasses, tufts from animal pelts, and down. All the textiles were handwoven, and when the summer night air had a chill to it, more skins were brought in for comfort. Extra blankets hadn’t been necessary this summer. Despite the bed’s lumpy appearance, Cam had never slept so well. Although he still wasn’t used to the massive horns on his head or the protruding wings from his back. The walls and the furniture were constantly changing, but when one lived inside a massive tree, one had to expect the unexpected. As the tree continued to grow, so did the interior of his assigned bedchamber. “Your Grace, the loincloth is traditional clothing. You were scheduled to meet with the queen, and certain conventions must be upheld. You need to get down to the court room.” Sen tried his best, but Cam’s tenacity would eventually wear out the tree sprite. “It’s nothing more than a jockstrap and I am not parading around in front of the entire Royal party in nothing but a G-string!” He pointed to the discarded underwear while scrunching his mouth to one side and crossing his arms. “But Your Grace—” Sen licked his lips while he continued to rub his hands together. Poor thing. Cam hadn’t made his summer an easy experience. The tree sprite had been assigned as Cam’s manservant as part of an international exchange program meant to expand the knowledge of cultural traditions and court customs from various fae clans around the world. Cam had seen and met Chaneques from southern Mexico, and Menehune from Oceania. Sen’s vibrant red hair, a characteristic of his tribe, contrasted starkly with his paper-birch complexion. Sen’s frame imitated the slender branches of a sinewy willow, so slight Cam mistakenly judged him to be frail, but he discovered otherwise. Fae could be inhumanly strong and there had been more than one occasion when Sen had managed to wrestle and hold Cam still during his magic training. Sen’s Japanese ancestry meant his tolerance did not allow for the wild range of temperatures inherent in a Canadian prairie summer. Cam had witnessed the creature either shivering to death on the rare cool summer evening or wilting in the August heat which regularly coalesced beneath the dense forest canopy. Sen’s homelands were far more temperate and kinder on a body. Despite Sen’s constant battle with the elements, his elongated limbs and fine features meant he was nimble and quick, which made him an excellent tutor for Cam’s induction in the ways of the fae. Escaping wild and out of control fae magic spells gone awry required additional agility. The fae were supposed to be nimble, graceful, and eloquently able to slip in and out of the shadows when required, a magical talent Cam had not mastered, along with several others. Sen’s intelligence, however, proved the Eldritch clan fae outwitted and outsmarted Cam’s constant manipulations. Cam struggled with his fae classification and history. The amount of concentration required to take in the volumes of documentation given to him bested his attention span. The antiquity of the clans spanned the course of human existence, and beyond. Each fae belonged within one of four houses, although there were multiple species within each camp. Earth fae belonged to the clan of the Eldritch, like Sen and Cam. Air fae were the Aethers and Corvins. Their feathered wings and skin made for unusual flying creatures who lived above the clouds. Cam latched on to the name for water fae because he found out Atlanteans were real. But he couldn’t recall what fire fae were called, and at this point he simply didn’t care. Cam had made the first few weeks frustrating for them both. He refused to study, and his wayward use of fae abilities had resulted in wanton destruction within the village, which landed him in hot water with the Ancestral Lands queen, Lady Aine. In his defence, Cam had demonstrated his ability to become invisible, and he regularly used probability spells to favour his penchant for doing nothing in the hot August afternoons. Cam stood beside his bed, naked, staring at the wall and contemplating how he had managed to get here. He had his best friend in the whole wide world to thank for all of this. Devid Khandelwal and his cockamamie summoning board had been the catalyst in forever altering Cam’s humanity, and subsequent captivity within the Ancestral Lands of the forest fae. Granted, his home in Edmonton wasn’t far away, but until Cam had, at a bare minimum, mastered the art of a human disguise, Lady Aine would never let him leave. Grasping the concept and maintaining the illusion proved inordinately difficult. He had to completely change his new horned and winged form into the way he used to be. That meant being able to maintain the image he wanted to project in his mind’s eye, all while holding conversations, or carrying out mundane tasks like household chores or visiting the local market. Illusions proved to be impossible for Cam, but public appearances with massive, curved horns and a slender furry tail would expose the Shadow Realm and its inhabitants to the mundane world. Exposure was something the entire magical community, fae, witches, beasts, and spirits alike, avoided at all costs. Cam’s membranous wings sputtered. The appendages had a life of their own, and often reflected his emotional state. “May I point out you’re not wearing anything right now, and yet I’m here. What’s so different between your nudity right now and satisfying the queen with your presence in clothing which is customarily worn by males?” “Sen, you’ve seen me naked every day, several times a day. You bathe me, not my choice. You dress me, not my choice. You wake me in the morning, also not my choice. And speaking of morning, where is my required cup of coffee?” Cam’s tail flicked from side to side as he glanced around his room, his wings flapping in annoyance. Camila, Cam’s alter ego and super bitch, showed up when the caffeine levels were bottoming out. The fae folk didn’t consume coffee, and Cam hadn’t had a good cup of velvety deliciousness in weeks. His irritability lately had known no bounds, but the community had made exceptions considering his most unusual initiation into the Ancestral Lands—coffee being one of them. The elders of the Ancestral Lands had commented on Cam’s oddness. His fae body held on to the addiction of caffeine when his stomach no longer tolerated anything more than meat. Protein, and lots of it, was a daily requirement. In short, Cam moped and perpetuated his miserable mood to everyone around him. His normal routine had been turned upside down, his dating life had been non-existent, and as much as he had relied on Dev for so much of his past life, he had to cut the guy some slack. Dev was going through his own adjustments, what with becoming a witch and getting a boyfriend in the deal.

He thinks I’m worth saving. He doesn’t know how wrong he is.

Some mistakes can never be redeemed.

I know that better than anyone. Last year I made the ultimate mistake—I cost someone their life. This trip I’m taking through Iceland, England, and France may look like the trip of a lifetime, but it’s not. This is a mission. I have to pay back the debts I owe the world.

Then I meet Gabriel Carrillo. Gabriel is kind, caring, and generous, and he seems to be on a mission of his own to make sure our paths keep crossing. Between sunrise swims in the Blue Lagoon and afternoon walks through Stonehenge, I find myself wanting to spend more and more time with him.

But Gabriel doesn’t know my secrets. He doesn’t know what I’m out to achieve.

He doesn’t know that my future is already set.

The Worst Bad Thing is a hurt/comfort romance set across three countries. It stars a former soldier and the mysterious man he falls in love with on a plane, and it features a HEA. Please see the Author’s Note for content warnings.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” he asks again.

“Sure. I told you. I’m just fine. I can’t even imagine what I was thinking when I had them call you.”

Gabriel rolls his eyes. “Maybe that you had a panic attack in the middle of an exhibit about particles?”

“Sure, maybe. Hey, look, a rugby game.”

“Tate, stop.” Gabriel grabs my sleeve lightly and spins me around to look him in the eye. “What’s going on? The museum officials said you were down for several minutes trying to get air back in your lungs. This attack was obviously serious. And people just don’t have panic attacks for no reason. What’s going on with you? Can I help with anything?”

Now it’s my turn to roll my eyes. “Shit, Gabriel. I just met you yesterday. I don’t even know your last name yet, for fuck’s sake. And if we’re being honest, you don’t know my first name. This isn’t any of your damn business. I’m sorry I had them call you. I should have just left you alone to meet with Thom Yorke or whoever.” I jerk my arm away from him and take off in the direction of the rugby game.

“James,” he calls after me.

I stop.

“James Tate O’Reilly.”

I turn around.

“I saw your passport yesterday at customs,” he says apologetically.

And you didn’t run away screaming. Which means you must not watch a lot of news.

“It’s an unusual middle name. Family name?”

I nod.

“I’m Gabriel Michael Carrillo. And I wasn’t meeting with Thom Yorke this morning. That would have been a hell of a lot more fun than what I was doing. But I didn’t have much choice in the matter.”

“Oh.” That’s all I can seem to say.

“Yeah. Listen. You don’t have to bare your soul to me or anything. We did just meet, and who knows if we’ll ever see each other again after this trip. But I really do like you, Tate. You have me worried. You going to collapse if we walk by a pigeon who looks at you funny?”

I glare at him. “Nice. Kick a guy after a panic attack.”

He moves closer to me until I’m standing directly in front of him. “You’re kind of cute when you’re pissed off. Actually you’re kind of cute all the time.”

“You’re not all that ugly yourself.”

And so we stand there for several long minutes, staring at each other while a British rugby team looks on. And possibly some pigeons.

Then we move away from each other and go back to our walk. Almost as though we never stopped in the first place.

Excerpt:

This is a scene early on in the story, where Oliver and Jack have stopped for the night. Oliver is worried that they are being followed, but more, he’s worried about Jack, who has a fever and some yet-undetermined illness. (From Oliver’s point of view.)

***

The room was somewhat less wild and insalubrious than the one at the Three Cripples. The ceiling creaked overhead, though Oliver didn’t imagine, didn’t want to imagine, that he heard roof rats scuttling about. As it was, he felt the need to jump out of his skin and get out of bed and walk around the whole of the coaching inn to look for constables, and the skulking ghost of Cromwell. To see if Noah Claypole had indeed followed them, to perform his office of informant with his usual élan and style. There were too many details he’d not attended to, too many shapes and outlines he’d not thought to be wary of. Something needed doing; with Jack’s ragged state, the bruises on his face, as well as Oliver’s own disheveled person, they could not have been taken for young gentlemen on a simple outing. That they’d not been arrested for vagrancy straight away was a small miracle; tomorrow might not bring the same luck. For Jack, all of this must seem so easy compared with the worry of being caught as a thief, compared to the worry of being homeless, attempting to convince Oliver to shut up and go to sleep seemed to be his main desire. That Jack had followed him this far, had not turned back to London in despair of Oliver being sensible enough to keep his mind in the moment, well, that was worth something. Jack deserved more, for simply coming this far with Oliver, so Oliver would give him that. Jack lay still now, next to him in the bed, in his arms. Where Oliver’s hands were tucked, he could feel the sweat under Jack’s arms, the rise and fall of Jack’s chest full of warmth and heartbeat and simmering fatigue. Oliver thought that, in spite of Jack’s protestations, he should have called for a doctor. Jack had said he only wanted to sleep. He might have said it for himself, for his own sake, but he meant it for Oliver’s as well. Jack knew how to be on the road, to be on the run, to play hide and seek in plain sight. If he was worried about what Oliver had done, he didn’t express any squeamishness that Oliver had killed a man with his bare hands. Though the heft of that cleaver as it hit bone still rang a ghostly vibration through his hands, to Jack, it was nothing, a mere trifle. If he was worried whether they would be discovered and arrested in the morning, he showed no sign of it. Whether he was still hungry or full of complaint at his own discomfort, he had barely spoken of it. It was only the heat of his body that soaked into Oliver’s bones that gave him pause. Jack was almost too warm to be near, too warm to so easily fall asleep, but yet he had. Oliver felt the start of Jack’s body before it calmed; the deepness of his breathing told Oliver that Jack was indeed exhausted, that the fever of his body or no, Jack was fast asleep. For a moment he wanted to awaken Jack, to ask him again whether it would be all right, but he stilled the thought even as he stilled his hand, still lightly clasped around Jack’s shirt collar. Had this been only a day or so ago, Oliver would not have hesitated to ask for soothing words, but Jack didn’t deserve to be woken merely to calm Oliver’s nighttime fears. The world he’d been in, had come so far from, was much darker now, and shadows on the walls, the unease of thought now that the day had come to an end, were only the small steps of a child. He had more things to worry about than that. Besides, after the day they’d had, he’d rather lock himself in a coal box than waken Jack. Jack had come with him from London, after all, something he’d sworn he’d never do. Oliver owed him a good night’s sleep, at least. So he tucked his chin, and burrowed beneath the blanket and thick sheet, let his eyes drift closed, and matched his breathing to Jack’s, his grasp on Jack’s collar never loosening.

About the Author:

Jackie North has been writing stories since grade school and spent years absorbing the mainstream romances that she found at her local grocery store. Her dream was to someday leave her corporate day job behind and put her English degree to good use and write romance novels, because for years she’s had a never-ending movie of made-up love stories in her head that simply wouldn’t leave her alone.

As fate would have it, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write books about. In this dazzling new world, she is now putting stories to paper as fast as her fingers can type. She creates characters who are a bit flawed and broken, who find themselves on the edge of society, and maybe a few who are a little bit lost, but who all deserve a happily ever after. (And she makes sure they get it!)

She likes long walks on the beach, the smell of lavender and rainstorms, and enjoys sleeping in on snowy mornings. She is especially fond of pizza and beer and, when time allows, long road trips with soda fountain drinks and rock and roll music. In her heart, there is peace to be found everywhere, but since in the real world this isn’t always true, Jackie writes for love.

Special Release Excerpt:

In a shimmer of air, Cam’s illusion to his human self appeared instead of his fae body.

The guise, however, didn’t come with any clothes other than the loincloth his manservant had eventually got him into. Cam hadn’t planned on bringing any additional human-like attire, so he had morphed himself into nakedness in front of Ev, but getting naked with Ev had been the reason why he came for a visit.

“Congratulations on figuring out your illusion spell. Maybe I can take you out for dinner.” Ev gave him a partial grin. It wasn’t hard to also notice Ev’s gaze giving him the once-over. “Perhaps if we go out, you could put on some clothes? You know, though, as cute as the human Cam is, I like the fae version too. Maybe even more.”

“What? Really?”

“Really. I kinda have a thing for the fae. Not all of them, but your kind, the Eldritch. I don’t know…maybe it’s the horns…”

“You kinky motherfucker. I never would have guessed you liked monster fucking.”

“I told you before not to put me into a box or label me.”

“You did say that. Okay, so be it.” Cam mentally wandered away from the place where machinations took form and let his mind roam to more erotic zones. And with the ripple of hot summer air, human Cam evaporated.

“That’s better.” Ev leered. “Ugh. You know how cute you are, right? Either way.”

“No, I don’t. You keep telling me, but I wish you’d show me.” Cam’s wings fluttered. His tail jumped, too, but he currently sat on the appendage so instead of a flick, the furry extension twitched, making the fuzzy tip hanging between his legs stretch toward Ev.

Ev’s gaze caught the movement.

“I want to play with your tail,” he whispered.

“Look, wolfman, you are more than welcome to play with my tail, my wings, stroke my horns, or anything else for that matter.”

“Cam, I…I know I promised you a roll in the hay.” Ev stammered but stopped. His skin flushed as he glanced away.

Cam had never seen the top of someone’s head turn red.

It was kind of cute.

He shuffled over and sat closer to Ev.

“I have kept you at an arm’s length the entire summer. I know how cruel you must think I am for doing that. I haven’t been fair to you.”

“No, you have not. But your insistence in keeping your distance has kept me horny as hell. Look.” Cam pointed at his loincloth which sported a prominent point, making the garment tent. “This is the effect you have on me. You have kept me hopelessly distracted, and hard. This is why I’m here, you oaf. I can’t concentrate long enough to study, or master anything about fae business because you keep getting up in my business. In fact, all my magical abilities have hinged around you.

“I want to be invisible? I think back to when you and I were held in the witches’ dungeon and that asshole Byron tortured you. I get so angry. The images of Byron cutting you open, the blood spilling out, you groaning in pain enrage me still. I go instant no see-em when I go there. I want to look like my old self? I think about how I’m gonna get you naked and have my way with you. Or any other master plan I have to ponder through—for whatever reason, scheming brings about the human guise.

“Shadow jumping I can initiate when I’m wanting to be next to you.” Cam leaned into Ev and tipped his head so that one horn lay on the beast of a man’s shoulder.

Ev put his paw on Cam’s thigh and gave him a squeeze.

“Higher,” Cam whispered.

Ev chuckled. “You are terrible.”

“I know.”

Ev inched his hand up.

The law is about how you choose to represent the truth. Love is no different.

Blurb

Hilary Whyte believes that he has left his teenage troubles—and the person who embodied them—in the past. He has spent a decade building his career as a defense solicitor, believing that despite his troubled past, even the worst human beings deserve justice.

Now he has a promotion on the horizon as well as a fairytale wedding to his film star fiancé. On paper, life couldn’t be better.

But now he is being made to represent Dom Gosford, the boy who made his adolescence a living hell, on a double murder charge, and Hilary can’t be sure he is innocent. As the trial approaches, the two men are forced to travel a road of discovery, only to find that the truth of their connection goes much deeper than the question of who killed Lizzie and Dean Wood.

Excerpt

Dominic finally turned around. Hilary had told himself many times in the last few weeks that he’d forgotten what this man looked like—that he’d successfully wiped the image from his mind, along with the sound of his voice. But as he took in the eyes, blacker than midnight, the hard, almost cruel set to a jaw that would otherwise be considered handsome, it was like Hilary was again sprawled on the PE changing room floor, that same face hanging over his, bloodied lips twisted and mocking, his fist raised for another blow.

“So, it really is you.” Dominic didn’t speak loudly, but it was like a stone had dropped into the silence of the room. “I could have laid a considerable amount of money on never seeing you again.”

“Well, I guess we would have both lost that wager. Shall we?” Hilary said, indicating the sofas and coffee.

“I’m good,” Dominic said, lifting his glass. “You help yourself.”

Hilary sat, ignoring the coffee, even though his veins were clamoring for caffeine. Fear that the coffee pot would shake in his grip was too real. Instead, he opened his briefcase and began laying the paperwork out on the narrow glass table. “It probably would have been better to meet at the office for this—”

“Too many flapping ears,” Dominic said. “My mother-in-law has some trust issues, to say the least.”

“We can manage here if you’re more comfortable. But just so you know,” he said, pulling a device out of his case and laying it on the coffee table, “I’ll be recording every session.”

“Still have trust issues of your own, I see.”

“So,” Hilary said, switching the recorder on, not meeting Dominic’s eye, “I’m up to speed on all the known facts of this case. This meeting is for me to get to know your side of the story in more detail and to help you prepare for what happens next.”

Dominic gazed at him thoughtfully. “I’ve been trying to remember… What was it we called you? In school?”

“That isn’t—”

“Lilywhite. That was it, wasn’t it?”

Hilary took a moment to steady his voice. “Let’s get one thing straight right from the start, Mr. Hart-Gosford,” he said levelly. “Our personal connection is one of the reasons why Walter Gunnerson wanted me to represent you. But all he knows is that we both attended St. Edmund’s.”

Dominic lifted his fine, black eyebrows. “If the good Mr. Gunnerson knew the truth, he might wonder why you agreed to take this case at all…as I do.”

Hilary looked him in the eye. “I’m capable of not allowing the past to affect my judgment. But if you insist on bringing it up, it will become a problem. Understand?”

He sipped his drink. “I understand.”
