Scene one is a glimpse into Mercury’s life. His soon-to-be-deputy, Gretchen is pretty much his best friend.

Mercury dropped his badge into the front pocket of his shirt after he parked next to the curb on Main Street. When he entered the station, Gretchen waited for him with her hand out.

Mercury rolled his eyes and handed over his mug.

“One of these days, you’ll tell me where you get it.”

“One of these days.” Mercury smirked and waited for her to hand back his cup. “What do you want from the bakery?”

Gretchen’s entire face lit up. “Cop food.”

“Which kind?”

“The crème-filled one.”

“Boston or Long-John.”

“Long John if Seamus has made them.”

Mercury held out his hand, but Gretchen held his cup to her chest as though she wanted to mother it, turning her back to him. “Holding my coffee hostage will catch you a charge.”

“‘Catch a charge’.” Gretchen chuckled. “You’ve been hanging around criminals too long.”
