My heart rate spikes as I turn to see if itโ€™s her. But I know it isnโ€™t when I hear the crash of breaking glass a moment later, followed by the muffled voices of men. I watch as two figures, clothed in black from head to toe, reach through the shards to unlock the front door and enter the shop.

They havenโ€™t spotted me and waste no time wreaking havoc, grabbing the computer monitor on the front desk and throwing it through the glass exterior wall. The crash is loud, and if any of the neighboring businesses are working late, Iโ€™m sure someone will call the cops. One of the guys has a bat, and he swings hard, splitting the desk in half.

My heart rate spikes for a different reason now, and adrenaline courses through my veins as I watch them destroy my property. I crack my knuckles, the muscles in my arms flexing from the motion.

โ€œCan I help you fellas?โ€ My voice rings out through the space, strong and sure.

They freeze, both heads whipping toward the corner, where I stand in the shadows.

I step forward, the light from outside illuminating my body.

โ€œRome,โ€ one of them growls. โ€œJust the man we wanted to see.โ€

I can see the smirk on his face. Itโ€™s one I recognize. I know who these two are, and I know who sent them. From their expressions, they think they have the upper hand. The element of surprise is on their side, and itโ€™s two against one. But what theyโ€™ve forgotten is that Iโ€™m a fighter. And not just any fighter โ€ฆ but the best underground boxer in the city. Iโ€™m used to being underestimated. And I never run from a challenge.

โ€œIs it just you two?โ€ I ask, moving a step forward.

The big guyโ€™s smirk falters for a second when he sees Iโ€™m unfazed.

โ€œThatโ€™s a mistake. Your boss shouldโ€™ve sent more guys.โ€
