Authors Note: This is a standalone spinoff novel from Duke but the author does recommend reading in order.

My phone rings so loudly in the woods, I almost drop it. My exes name flashes across the screen. I hit ignore, sending him to voicemail. Head bent down, it looks like I’m stretching when I’m trying really hard not to cry, I’m so angry.
Someone’s coming.
Heavy feet pound on the ground so hard, it vibrates.
Twigs snap.
My heart races, remembering the last time I was caught by the woods alone.
I straighten, preparing to face whatever’s coming.
A man’s running around the bend in the trail, racing towards me. He’s wearing a hoodie with the sleeves cut. Every muscle in his arms pops as he pumps them. I can’t see his face, but his eyes are so blue they glow from under the shadow of his hood. My eyes take in his form, traveling down to the muscle in his thick legs. They’re huge, tan and covered in tats.
Holy fuck.
My knees shake.
My body trembles.
I freeze. Like prey and he’s the predator, barreling down on me. I’m in his sights and I don’t care if he catches me. I want to be caught.
He reaches me, arms snaking out, grabbing me by the waist. He pushes me up against a tree, hard thighs pressing into mine.
He growls, breathing hard against my neck, “Fair game. Out in the woods alone… a sweet thing like you is fair game.”
He kisses my collarbone and I breathe him in.
His skin is slick with a light coat of sweat. He smells like pine, the woods and… Rog.
My legs wrap around his waist. The rough bark digs into my back. I grunt feeling his heavy cock between my thighs. His nose dips and rubs between my cleavage. He lowers my legs to the ground, lifts my shirt, quick hands unclasping my bra. I mewl like a kitten feeling his hot mouth suckle a nipple before rolling it between his tongue.
“So fuckin’ sweet,” he murmurs, moving his mouth to my other breast. I groan, looking down at him loving me with his mouth. The sweet tingle between my thighs turns to a pounding ache. I groan pushing my hips forward needing relief.
His hand unzips my jean shorts, fingers brushing inside, pulling my panties to the side to slide through my slick folds.
“Dev,” he groans finding my clit with his index finger.
I cry out, as he circles it, plays with it while his lips nibble on my nipple before he takes it in his mouth suckling hard.
“Come for me baby. I want to feel it,” he says hoarsely shoving his thick fingers in.
My head falls back against the tree with a thump, he has me. All of me in his hands and I’m coming apart at the seams for this man. He’s not only commanding my body, he’s ruling my wounded heart. Re-building it and tearing it apart at the same time.
“Rog,” I groan, pulling at him, needing his kiss.
He lets my nipple go only to claim my mouth. Our kiss is as wild and rough as the Pacific Northwest woods, his fingers slip through my wetness finding my clit and stroking inside. His kiss sucks my soul from my body to fuse with his as I feel the waves of my release crash over me into his waiting hands.
He grunts, pressing harder into me, determined to coax every last bit of pleasure from my body.
I shake in his embrace, gasping into the air around us, his hands holding me firmly as I lose my mind to the pleasure he gave me.
When it’s over he rests his forehead against mine. His heart beating harder now than it was from his workout.
I did this to him—made his heart race.
A few joggers come around the same bend he did, and I jerk in embarrassment at how close I came to coming in front of complete strangers. Thank god, they are wearing earbuds because my breathy moans and shouts echoed for a mile I’m sure.
My skin’s flushed, pieces of bark cling to my hair. He did this to me—made me forget the world. For one moment, I forgot all the lies and secrets I’m keeping—ready to burst and ruin what we’re building at any second.
The joggers pass by and my hands reach out clinging to the front of him as I jerk him close for one more reckless kiss. I need to get them now, while he burns for me because it won’t be much longer until he learns the truth.
The air’s thick between us.
So much is understood but left unsaid. I hang my head afraid of what he’ll see in my eyes. Rog is astute—he’ll know I’m hiding something.
His fingers thread through mine, he gives me a firm tug and we walk down the trail back to the parking area. He stares down anyone who even thinks about glancing my way. I feel so… protected, as if this giant man holding my hand in his, would slay anyone who dared to hurt me in anyway.
We reach my car, my head tips back, his fingers trail down my cheek before he cups my chin and plants the sweetest kiss full of promise on my lips.
“See you at the lake, sugar.”
He opens my door, eyes hungrily devouring every inch of my tan legs up to where my shorts hug the top of my thighs.
I see it all over his face, he wants to make me his, most likely at the lake this weekend. I won’t be able to hold him off without exposing myself.
I gulp, needing him, wanting him so much. But he’ll hate me if we come together only for my lies to rip us apart.
I nod my head as he shuts the door. Driving back to the apartment my thoughts are all over the place, but it’s funny how life unravels; meeting Rog was so unscripted. Thank God Jeff dumped me. Rog’s touch makes me burn more than Jeff’s ever did. I can’t believe there was a time when I thought that man was it for me. In a fucked-up way, finding the road Dee walked brought me Rog. And I want to keep on going, excited but scared as hell to see where it will lead.
I drive home on auto-pilot, my thoughts and emotions wrecked. I’m a pendulum swinging in a different direction at every new revelation that unfolds.
It’s quiet as I pull down the lane to the apartment house. The outside light shines in the twilight. Crickets and grasshoppers sing, the brightest stars can be seen as the sun sinks so low—all that’s left is the dull pink of its wake in the sky.
My tired feet climb the stairs, finally I fumble the key in the lock and open the door. Luce already has a bottle of wine uncorked and a full glass waiting.
She arches an eyebrow, “Damn, please tell me some insanely hot mountain man ravaged you in the woods and now you can’t walk straight.” She gets up walking closer smirking, “You have sticks in your hair and a hickey on your neck.”
“H-he didn’t.”
“He did. Damn, was it the Silver Fox? ‘Cause he just marked you as his woman judging by that love bite. Oh, god, please tell me it was him,” she sighs, walking back to the couch fanning herself with one hand while picking up her wine glass with the other.
I groan slumping down beside her and practically guzzling mine. “It was him. It’s a glorious hot mess, Luce.”
“I’ll bet. Did you really do it in the woods? I knew you had it in you, you dirty slut!” She practically shrieks.
“NO! God, no Luce. I drove out to the old logging roads to clear my head. It’s a trail area now, where people workout. He was running and we kinda collided.”
“Yeah, collisions don’t leave love bites and the smell of sex behind.”
I whiff my shirt. “I don’t smell like sex!”
She rolls her eyes. “Was he huge? Did you feel him? Did you come?”
“Calm down, Luce. What the heck?”
“It’s been a long time for me. So long, I feel like a virgin.”
“Well, it’s been a long time for me too. That’s probably why I came screaming like a banshee when he had me pinned up against the tree.”
“Jesus. I’m so glad the shop next to the tattoo parlor sold vibrators.”
“W-what?” I stutter.

“Don’t worry. I got one for you too. And hopefully, after this weekend, you won’t need it because you’ll have that Silver Fox’s big dick in you every night.”

Cross Jacobs was a screw-up.

Everyone knew it, especially him, and the point was hammered home when Kallie Welch drove herself right out of his life.

But, she’s back.

Seeing Cross wasn’t on Kallie’s to-do list. She didn’t think she could avoid him forever but trying never hurt anyone. One minute she’s standing by herself and the next she’s accosted by a rich, velvety scent that could only belong to one man: Cross.

At face value, he’s divine. All rugged and confident with a smile that melts her right where she’s standing. It doesn’t take long to find him to be charming, witty, and the owner of a few legitimate businesses. Not at all like the mischievous boy she left.

He laughs and her heart flutters. With a touch of his hand, she’s dizzy. She’s fairly certain she’s going to die when he pulls her into an embrace and touches his lips to her forehead.

It feels right. It feels so right.

But is it?

Blurb:

With two coronations to attend, you’d think the universe would stop piling catastrophes on top of Louella Eschete, but you’d be dead wrong. As she prepares to ascend two thrones, one as Lady of the Cortez Vampire Court and the other as Matriarch of the Eschete Witches, she must face a new evil.
Just when Lou is ready to stab a seamstress with a hat pin, murder and strange occurrences begin to happen around her city. Stolen corpses in the cemetery, decapitated astronomers, and hearts taken from nursing homes is odd, even for Louisiana. There is no rhyme or reason to the carnage, but the sigil left behind at a scene points to something ancient.
It’s a race against the clock for humanity. There’ll be nothing to rule if everyone’s dead.

The Parts I Remember

Title: The Parts I Remember
Author: A.B. Wood
Genre: Second Chance Romance
Release Date: May 18, 2018
Cover Designer: Letitia Hasser, RBA Designs

Kathy Reader – “I have read thousands of books, and this is definitely one of the top books ever.”

Teri – “A great cozy story with great characters.”

Having the one you love walk away from you, leaving you to wonder —to assume— that you’ve been used and that you mean nothing to them, is either:

*The hardest truth you will ever be forced to endure.

Or

*The biggest lie you will ever tell yourself.

The answer, for me, waits on the other end of this incoming call; and I don’t even see it coming.

~ THE PARTS I REMEMBER ~

A. B. Wood 2017

“I picked up my glass of wine, walked into my bedroom and to the other side of the bed so I could look out of the window. Hoping to clear the euphoric fog from my head. Snow was on its way. I love snow, and I was as excited as a small child waiting for the first flake to fall. As I stood in the window, holding the curtains open with my right arm extended, he was suddenly behind me. His approach had been stealth-like, and by the time I was aware of his return, his arms were wrapped tightly around me, pulling me back against his chest. He pressed his left cheek to my right one; heaven. Feeling his warm breath on my skin, I couldn’t resist turning to face him, his embrace relenting only enough to allow me to turn. Then his mouth was on mine again. I gently pushed free, after only a moment, and motioned my intention to set my glass down on the bedside table. He gently held on to my free hand. As soon as I set it down I returned to him. I gave a gentle push towards the bed as our mouths once again found each other. So much for being good. He followed and holding me in one arm had gently supported my weight until our bodies met the mattress. He allowed himself to land beside me, on his side, and he immediately began to undo my clothing. He started with the button on my jeans, then slowly my zipper. Still providing very passionate kisses, he slid his hand under my panties and began to tenderly yet firmly touch me with only a finger.”

A. B. Wood is a sassy southern girl with a love for people, food, music and laughter; and will never turn down a glass of wine or whiskey. Being an only child, raised by a single mom, and a wife and mother of two boys, she has experienced so many “ya can’t make this stuff up” moments in her life, it just made sense to start writing. Her favorite season is college football (GO HOGS) and her happy place is on any beach. When she’s not writing you can find her volunteering at her local high school. In her free time, she enjoys watching movies and historically based television series, reading and traveling. Her motto is, “Don’t miss out on living, ‘cause you’re afraid of dying.”

Careful what you wish for…

Close to landing a role in a sitcom he hopes will show his father he isn’t a failure, Vane Riley loses everything when his boyfriend dumps him and his father dies. With nowhere to turn, he heads home to regroup and help his sister, Rose, keep the family diner afloat. Trying to ease his grief with a guy in a bar seems like a good idea until the guy can’t get rid of him fast enough. The last thing Vane expects is for his one-night stand to appear at his dad’s funeral with a quirky tarot reader on his arm and a romantic history with Rose.

Doug Moore is a widower who isn’t ready to move on, but he can’t seem to get the clumsy guy he met the night before out of his thoughts. After helping Vane get back into the car he somehow locked himself out of, Doug figured he’d never see him again and can’t believe his lousy luck when Rose’s loser brother turns out to be the hookup he can’t stop thinking about. Doug is determined to keep his distance, but when Rose hires him to renovate the family home Vane is now living in, there’s not much chance of that happening.

Though Doug wants nothing more than to resist him, Vane ticks all his boxes. Clumsy, needy, sexy and… Oh yeah. Paranoid. Not for a minute does Doug believe somebody is out to hurt Vane despite the strange accidents that have befallen him since returning home, but Vane is sure somebody wants him dead.

Doug is solid and steady. Vane is emotional and imaginative. Nobody’s trying to kill him. Doug is sure of it…

Excerpt

The interior was dark, lit mostly by the glow of the TV.

Doug was pretty sure the guy at the table beside him was sound asleep. The dreariness of the place hit him out of the blue, and he had a feeling he was just punishing himself by staying. There were other places he could be, even sitting in a movie theater with Dorcas if he’d thought about it. But that ball of energy in his chest had brought him here.

He let his chair tip down just as the entrance door swung open and somebody in jeans and a jacket with a hoodie underneath stepped in—and promptly tripped. After he righted himself, the guy fixed what had to be a glare at the raised section of weather stripping across the threshold.

Doug lifted his mug, laughing into it before he took a drink.

The newcomer headed to the bar and stood at the corner until the owner finished with another customer and turned to him. Doug couldn’t see the guy’s face in the shadows, but he heard the owner say, “Yeah?” in a surprised tone and a few words in return. “Real quick… couple miles.”

Doug doubted the owner responded to whatever the guy was talking about. A useful reply would need more than the “You gonna buy somethin’?” he came up with.

Doug finished his beer and kept his eye on them. Maybe the owner made the guy nervous because the money he dug out of his pocket flew everywhere but on the counter.

“Shoot.”

The almost curse rang loud and clear. Doug grinned as the guy chased the rolling coins, picked up a couple, turned around, and bent over again.

Nice. Cute little bottom in those worn-out jeans.

Doug watched him step back to the corner of the bar and count his coins. The owner shook his head. Doug sighed, guessing the guy didn’t have enough money and the owner wouldn’t cut him any slack. What an asshole. Doug wasn’t coming to this place anymore. It had always been sketchy, but now it was a dreary, low-class dump.

He stood and strode to the bar. “Another one. For him too.”

The guy raised his head from his pile of money, and Doug got his first good look at his face. He startled. “Jesus, are you okay?”

The guy frowned, looking cute as hell as he tried to figure out Doug’s question.

Doug pointed at his own cheek. The poor light hid a lot, but he thought the guy blushed. And then he… giggled. A real-live giggle. Doug couldn’t help but laugh. Of all the weird things. Though from the twitches running through the guy, his giggle was clearly a result of his nerves. Doug liked that. Meg had been shy too.

“Kick-boxing.”

The words took a moment to register. Doug lifted the beer the bartender set down and motioned with his chin at the other one. The guy picked it up, nodded, and took a swallow. His sigh sounded happy.

“I didn’t think kicking people in the face was allowed,” Doug said. He didn’t for a minute believe the guy had gotten his bruises in a kickboxing match.

“Well, it was an accident. I’m kind of clumsy.”

No kidding. “Glad I have no interest in contact sports.” No, Doug was a baseball kind of guy and lazy about working out. His job was physical, and he put muscle on without even trying.

“I quit,” the guy said.

“Better part of valor,” Doug murmured.

A slow smile lit the guy’s face. “Caution is preferable to rash bravery,” he added to the quote. “You’re a Shakespeare fan.”

Doug hid his surprise with a nod. The guy was beautiful and charming and familiar, but Doug drew a blank trying to figure out where he’d seen him before. “Are you from around here?”

That changed things. The smile flattened, and the guy pulled back.

“Just visiting. My car broke down. Well, not actually broke down. I got out and dropped my keys.” He gave a blustery-sounding laugh. “Now I’m locked out.”

“I can jimmy it.”

The guy stared at him with his mouth half open. The pink of his tongue showed. Damn. Heat built between Doug’s legs. He shifted on his stool as his lust bloomed, a sensation he’d almost forgotten about. He hooked up with willing partners to expend some energy, but to be honest, attraction wasn’t usually a big part of it.

“Are you a car thief?” the guy asked, shrugging his jacket off.

“Right.”

The smile came back. “Just checking.”

The guy shifted to the stool between them and his hair swung, the dark ends brushing the tops of his shoulders. He tucked it behind his ears, then pushed up the sleeves of his hoodie. He had holes in his lobes but no earrings, and a tattoo of a sun done in black ink decorated the inside of a wrist.

Doug rocked forward, feeling the pressure on his balls, and set his elbow on the counter. “Drink up. I’ll take you to your car.”

The guy nodded. “That’d be great. I was going to call someone, but my phone’s broken.”

Of course it was. This guy screamed total disaster. “What’s your name?”

A whisper of a hesitation preceded his smile. “Ethan.”

Ethan. A nice name, but it wasn’t his. Or maybe it was his middle name. Interesting. Doug wasn’t afraid of him and didn’t think he was a psycho serial killer or anything. When it came down to it though, he probably couldn’t pick a serial killer out of a crowd to save his life. But this guy looked friendly, a little nervous, and a lot needy.

The perfect storm for Doug. He stuck out his hand. “I’m Doug.”

Warm fingers gripped his, and a jolt like a zap from a live wire shot up his arm and down his spine. Ethan’s mouth opened again, a slight part, the pink of his tongue a glimmer inside. “Nice to meet you, Doug.”

“You too.”

He wanted to do more than meet him though. He wanted to plant himself inside him. Ethan’s eyes widened as Doug stared at him, his pupils stretching to the edges of his irises. He flicked his lip with his tongue, picked up his beer, and chugged it.

“Want another?” Doug asked.

Ethan set his mug down. “Sure.”

Doug raised two fingers. “So whadda you do?”

“Write. I’m a writer.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Well, wannabe. I don’t have anything out, yet.”

“You will if you keep at it. That’s impressive. I have a tough time writing a two-page proposal.”

“What kind of proposal?”

“Job proposals. I own a construction company. We do mostly renos and additions.”

“Oh, that’s cool. Like the Property Brothers.”

Without the brother. Or the money. Or the fame. Doug nodded and pressed his lips into a smile. “Exactly.”

Ethan grinned. “I love those shows. I can barely use a hammer.”

“Somehow I think your thumbs thank you for not trying.”

Ethan gaped. Then he inhaled as though to speak but laughed first instead. “Okay. Okay. That’s probably true.”

His hand rested on the counter, and Doug wanted to touch it. The fingers lay flat, long, and slender. The thumb twitched, and Ethan curled it under his palm.

He was elegant and clumsy. And interested in Doug. Heat glowed in his eyes.

Doug pointed a finger at the beer. “Finish up. Let’s get out of here.”

Ethan swallowed. “Yeah. Okay.”

After he drank the rest of his beer and tugged his coat on, Doug gestured to the back door. “This way.”

They went down a short hall to a door painted the same black as the walls. Doug opened it and looked back. A hesitant smile greeted him and a flutter of panic stirred in Doug’s belly. Too sweet.

He knew with perfect certainty he should bail and also that he wasn’t going to.

Returning to Sovereign City after everything that was stolen from her is something Indra never thought she would do. Despite the scars she wears both inside and out, left there at the hands of the Sovereign and the Fortis, she is determined to save her people from oppression, even if it means putting her own safety at risk. But it isn’t long before she once again finds her world shattering around her. As the dust settles, Indra manages to find strength among the ruins, and she sets out on a quest to unite the four Outlier tribes, hoping to take their enemies down once and for all.
Readers agree that Outliers is a “A brilliantly beautiful soul trembling story that has left me pining for more,” and that “Indra is the kind of dystopian protagonist I’m always searching for, but rarely find.”

Just as I had expected, Saffron was sitting behind her desk when I stepped into her office, waiting for me. Her eyes, which were the same steely gray as her hair, swept over me when I stopped in front of her, and her lips twitched as if she were working to hold in a smile. In front of her sat the electroprod, menacing even in its silence.
“I’m glad you decided to return,” she said after only a beat of silence.
I lowered my head, but not nearly as low as it used to be. My eyes, however, were not focused on the wood floors gleaming beneath my feet, but instead on the woman in front of me. Her skin appeared twice as pale in the dim light of the room, and I was once again struck by how smooth it was despite having lived more than a half a century.
“Thank you for the opportunity.” I intentionally left off the word mistress.
If Saffron noticed, she made no mention of it. Instead, she stood from her chair and crossed to the front of the desk, her eyes on me the whole time. I watched as she did it, my gaze focused and steady. Not once did it waiver from her face, and not once did I consider lowering it to the ground.
She frowned, pulling her waxy skin down as her eyes swept over me again. Saffron had put on weight over the last six months, although she was still nowhere near as plump as most of the Sovereign, and her face was rounder than it had been. It made her look more like her son, which should have scared me, but instead made my back stiffen even more as my determination to stand up to this woman grew in intensity. She and I were the same height, short by the standards of both the Fortis and the Outliers, but average among the Sovereign.
I had always been the shortest among my people, though, and it suddenly made sense why that was. Outliers tended to be tall and wiry, while the Sovereign were short and much rounder. Their thickness stemmed from their gluttonous lifestyles, but the height was something that had come about over centuries, perhaps due to the lack of variety in their bloodlines, and it explained why I was such a small person. Only last night, right after Mira had returned to the city and told me Saffron wanted me to return to my post, I discovered I had been born within these very walls. That I was Sovereign by birth but had been smuggled out of the city and raised as an Outlier.
Saffron stood in front of me, her emotionless eyes silently taking me in for another moment before saying, “Six months? That’s how long it’s been?” She paused so I could nod. “I thought you would need the time to not only recover, but to think about how you would proceed once you were back in my good graces. I take it you now understand that defiance of any kind will not be tolerated?”
“I now know that Outliers are expected to bend to the will of the Sovereign no matter what the circumstances are.”
Saffron’s left eyebrow lifted just a tad, and I could tell that she was trying to decide if my words meant I agreed with her, or if I was making a point.
After a moment she said, “Very well, then. You may return to your post.”
I bowed my head slightly as I took a step back. “Thank you.”
This time when I left mistress off, Saffron’s eyes did narrow. She said nothing, but her gaze followed me as I turned away and dug into my back like the claws of a lygan. I kept my head high, though, and my spine straight as I left her office, and I had no intention of changing that, no matter what I faced today or any other day. From now on, I would be stronger than even the strongest of the Fortis guards.
